‪Hidden But Worth the Visit‬
ספט׳ 2019
‪If you want to visit something hidden and off the typical tourist site list, this is one place to go. It is not too far from Paris and worth a visit on a sunny Sunday afternoon for example. It was the home of French author Alexandre Dumas, who wrote, entre autres, the Three Musketeers. He had quite an exciting life apparently and in the end had to sell all the furniture in the house to pay his debts. Anyway, the 'house' is more like a chateau and there is an additional 'cottage' where he used to write. Very nice gardens to stroll around too. We were lucky to see an art exhibit by an artist from Chicago named Adu Jahmal. Seven euros per person entry fee.‬

‪Beautiful, Interesting - and off tge beaten path‬

‪I got there a little accidentally - after a business meeting I checked if there is anything interesting close by. It was tricky to get there, as the entrance is a little hidden, but ot was absolutely worth it!

The mansion itself is lovely and filled with stories concerning the life of Alexander Dumas which was much more interesting than I thought.

But the true jewel is his study - a tiny house composed of two rooms, which looks like a medieval doll house.

The park in which they are located is pleasantly arranged, and most importantly - there are no crowds!

Visit if you are nearby!‬

‪A LITTLE HIDDEN PLACE FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD‬
מאי 2019 • זוגות
‪It was a Sunny day, a perfect day to visit this little château. Dumas was hidden in this little slice of Heaven to get inspiration for his writings and also to enjoy life far form the buzzing atmosphere of Paris. From Saint germain En Laye you take bus N10 that get you to this place. The park around it and the château d'If are good spots Pleasant for the eyes and the mind. some nice and refreshing ponds give a certain heavenly note. The chateau Monte Cristo has a good architecture. some notes , paintings and décors match the atmosphere of the 19th century and gives a certain intimate view of Dumas. unfortunately bus 10 does not run frequently. Every hour. So, go further and catch bus 21 that leads you to the train station. For cars, no problem a private parking is a bliss. An hour or an hour and half is good enoght for a visit.‬

‪A bit difficult to find you have to drive to the far end of a hospital carpark to get there. Very quiet but extremely interesting chateau build by Dumas to work in and entertain in.‬

‪Missable but not to be missed!‬

‪Difficult to track down but found it in the end - free parking once you suss the system. Gate at the end of a busy payant carpark and street but you simply press the buzzer and the gate opens and lot's of easy places to park. If you like Dumas it's a fascinating place but not to be compared with the grandeur of chateaux on the Loire. Lot's of info and pictures of the great man and some delightful gardens.‬

‪This was the incredibly ambitious and mad project of the famous writer Dumas... what a wonderful domain with a beautiful English style garden. There are not many tourists who come here so it is a lovely place to come and visit for an outing for family or friends.‬

‪A wonderful few hours‬
אוק׳ 2017 • חברים
‪Visiting this château where Alexandre Dumas Père (the elder of two Dumas writers ) lived and wrote makes for a charming couple of hours.

Do not expect a ‘Palace of Versailles’ style castle, but rather a mansion. (Linguists no longer translate the French word ‘château’’ as ‘castle’, but it remains a château.)

After Dumas had been forced to sell the property for financial reasons, it had changed ownership several times, the splendid Dumas furniture, furnishings and ornaments having been discarded.

In the1970s though the property was declared an Historical Monument (Monument Historique) and restored by the French State. The restoration of one room, today the most beautiful, was financed by the then King of Morocco - Hassan Deux – father of the present monarch - ) to what it had looked like in Dumas’s time. Dumas had been inspired while visiting Morocco for the creation of the room.

The best way to get to the château from Paris is to take the RER-A train from Chatelet-les-Halles station to Saint-Germain-en-Laye. At Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Bus No 10 which goes in the direction of Marly-le-Roi will get you to the château. You descend at the stop Les Lampes which is just two stops from where you get on to the bus.

This is how you find the stop for bus No 10. Walk along the front of the Saint-Germian-en-Laye château, pass it, continue along that road and at the first crossroad you turn left. You will see buses going that way so you will know you are going in the correct direction. There are several bus stops side by side, so look for the one which will give the number 10 on the top of the stop.

At the Les Lampes stop, street signs will direct you to the château. It is a bit of a walk.

The park around the château is not very big, but beautifully green and leafy and you could sit down for a rest before or after your visit.

The staff are not all that friendly.

The souvenir shop is well-stocked but like all souvenir shops expensive.

There is no tearoom on the premises.

Small children will probably not be too welcome in the château, and there is not really much for them in the park.

The château is 20 kms west from Paris.

Cheapest way to get there is with a Mobilis 4-Zone RATP transport ticket. The ticket is valid until midnight, in and everywhere within Zone 4. It will cost you 12.40 euros.

Opening days and times in the summer are: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12.30 pm and then again from 2 pm to 6 pm.

In the months of winter (in other words from November) it is open only on Sundays.

It costs 7 euros to go in. The ticket office is at the entrance to the property which means that the park is also not free. To pay 7 euros just to go for a walk in the park, is not worth it.‬

‪Small castle—hard to find‬
אוק׳ 2017 • זוגות
‪We read the reviews and decided to see Dumas' castle. From Paris, we took the RER A Train to St-Germain-En-Laye and then took the No.10 bus on the side of the St.-Germaine chateau. The place loses one star for poor instructions: the bus driver was unhelpful and let us off at the Place de Monte Cristo Stop. After asking people on the street, we had to walk uphill to the next bus stop and walk down a long road to the castle. The correct stop should have been one stop earlier at "Les Lampes," where the bus stop has a sign to walk downhill one block and turn onto a paved pathway to the chateau entrance. The Monte Cristo web site should put this in their directions. We arrived at 11:30am on a Friday and were told the chateau closed for lunch from 12:30 to 2 pm. Minus another star because paying visitors are not allowed to stay in the park during the noon closure and picnicking is not allowed at the "historical monument." Give me a break, even Versailles and Vaux le Vicomte allow visitors to stay in the gardens when the chateau is closed! (Note: the chateau is open 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekends, after Nov. 1, it is only open on Sundays). As it was, we went through the castle in less than an hour, but wished we had more time to visit the gardens. Dumas was a colorful many-faceted character and the text description in English in each room tells about many aspects of his life. He spend a fortune building his "Paradise on Earth", lived in it for less than two years, and then had to sell it to pay off his debts. I'm sure people were laughing behind his back (and maybe in front of him) about his poor people and money management skills. The best part of the chateau is the Moroccan salon which is beautifully decorated. Conclusion: a nice visit if you are in the neighborhood, but check the opening hours first. No cafe in the park and picnicking is not allowed.‬
