A wonderful surprise of a small museum

This building looks modest from outside, but it houses a small range of stunning and very beautiful exhibits. It was an immense surprise and pleasure to find such beautiful paintings, statues, reliquaries, and clerical robes. The explanatory signage in English is also excellent

Museo Civico Altomonte: a must!

The Museo Civico is an Exquisite museum of sacre art in the Dominican monastery adjacent to Santa Maria Church. It is full of medieval work of arts: paintings, sculpture, sacred vestments, wood and alabaster carvings etc. The exhibits are of high cultural achievement: the San Ladislao, Simone Martini, tempera; la Madonna di Trapani, sculpture; the famous panting Madonna delle Pere.

something to do while in altomonte

a small museum that takes only an hour to go through. The building itself is interesting as it has some history. Its something to do on a rainy or hot day in town.

We have come to love Altomonte in our travels in Italy.We make it a habit to visit the local churches and found this small museum nearby.This is a must see and the town is charming

A tiny gem of a museum

Combine a visit to the museum with one to the cathedral next door. The situation in an ex convent is beautiful and the collection has a handful of real treasures including early renaissance altarpieces, a panel by Simone Martini and a stunning alabaster relief. My advice is to cherry pick what you see, the medieval collection is certainly the best.

Not expecting this at all in a corner of a small village but the art work, artifacts and other exhibits are wonderful.
Just 3 Euro or 1 Euro for seniors it is great value. The court yard is also well kept.

Small but impressive collection

This monastery then convent then museum has history in the building as well as what's in it. The collection of paintings and clerical items is impressive and beautiful.

If you're in Altomonte, don't miss the Museo. It's quite small and it won't be crowded. The collection is lovingly exhibited. There are beautifully exquisite ivories. Nice medieval paintings by Simone Martini and Bernardo Daddi. Poster of The Madonna with the Pear is on my office wall! Odd painting that's a keepsake of our visit to Altomonte. Find your own favorite!

Impressive for a small town

The many interesting exhibits in the museum are housed in the old convent adjoining the church. One area upstairs holds a number of old musical instruments.
