A little known place that certainly desves the visit. We were lucky that our visit, booked in advance, was in a moment with few people around, and mostly that we had the incomparable young guide appropriately named Guido. He is enthused about the place, its history and art.

We lucked in! Showing up around 5 p.m., we went to the office and found Guido, who undertook to be our guide. "Nomen est omen" certainly applied in this case: he was a delight. The language we settled on was German, and he turned out to have a pretty good command of it.
Jerusalemme dates from the sixteenth century, when pilgrimages to the Holy Land were blocked by the Ottoman occupation of the region. The collection of buildings reflected their configuration in Jerusalem. The tour Guido gave us around the various buildings, dealing with various aspects of the Passion story as it was understood in the sixteenth century against the background of Ottoman advances in the Middle East and in Central Europe, was informative and entertaining. He had gone to considerable trouble to inform himself, and he was eager to share his information. The took took about 90 minutes, and I, for one, enjoyed every minute of it. Highly recommended, provided you can find an appropriate guide to take you around the site.

“The Jerusalem of Tuscany”. There are 17 chapels and a Monastery. No one was there when we went in the morning. The Fresco we saw through the window was beautiful. It would have been great to do the tour, but we did not have time to return. A monk does tours at 3 pm.

I had a blast going to this site in May of 2017. The caretaker, Antonello, was exceptionally helpful and the art students who were on site were very kind. I enjoyed Antonello's tour and look forward to going back to San Vivaldo next summer. Anyone interested in visiting should check the opening times before they go. Highly recommended.

It's easy to find and the main Church is fairly plain but peaceful and has some impressive statues.
It was however quite confusing trying to find the main entrance.. and there was nobody to ask.. we only found the "entrance" as we were leaving! So check the details before visiting.

Anyone who knows the whole of "Sacri Monti" (Holy Mountains) of Piedmont and Lombardy (of which today nine are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites), could be brought to overlook this complex of chapels and terracotta sculptures, as it is alone and isolated.
Yet this person would be wrong, because the history of San Vivaldo is more complex than it seems. Historians as Franco Cardini (Italy) and Annabel Jane Wharton (USA) well have reconstructed the whole story of it.
The "pre-history", so to speak, of this sanctuary, is linked to Vivaldo Stricchi, a hermit who died here in 1320 and was much worshiped by the local population. On his grave was firstly built a chapel, then in 1355 the church, which - deeply transformed - you can still visit today.
On this tradition is then inserted, in the fifteenth century, the will (mostly supported by the Franciscan friars) to provide the population an exact (also topographically) reproduction of the Jerusalem's sites that have seen the passion of Christ.
San Vivaldo (which is entrusted to the Franciscans in 1497), and Varallo (Piedmont, Northwestern Italy) are the primeval models of this intention. Later Varallo is accompanied by many other nearby similar creations, which today constitute precisely the current UNESCO World Heritage; while San Vivaldo remains isolated and almost forgotten until recent times.
In San Vivaldo today (in addition to the already mentioned church and to the convent, now almost empty of monks) seventeen chapels survive, while in 1515 they totaled twice, ie thirty-four. It seems that those missing have been swallowed up by landslides.
The chapels - recently restored - are not freely visited, being closed and locked (which didn't prevent the theft of a statue, a few years ago); there are guided tours, which last an hour, at the fair rate of 5 euro per person.
The guide summarily shows (if needed, also in English and French) the scenes represented in each chapel: They are painted terracotta figures, almost life-size, which mainly allude to the Jesus Christ's Passion, as recorded in the Gospels. Both the architectural style of the chapels, and the style of the sculptures, feature the Tuscan Renaissance.
Definitely, it's a visit not to miss, but that will be more interesting if you understand that this place is a crucial episode of that veneration for the Christian Jerusalem, which was held in the past in Western Europe.

Everything was closed apart from the church in total darkness, but the sight of an old Franciscan monk feeding about 20 cats running around the place was interesting. Obviously an important place in the history of pilgrims,it was nice just to be in this small place for a short time.

It's an interesting journey to find this place but it is worth it. The chapels and temples were built at the time of the expansion of the Ottoman empire that made travel to Jerusalem a dangerous journey for Christian pilgrims: this site provided a safer alternative for pilgrimage. The leaflet, available at the church, provides an explanation but the board, alongside the church, gives the politically incorrect explanation.

We visited Sacro Monte de San Vivaldo, on a Sunday , so we were able to hear Mass. The history and the beauty of this place is breathtaking. The forest around the whole area is ideal for a picnic , there wooden tables and chairs close to the main Church. Very close there is 17 small Chapels , each one dedicated to a Saint, there are guided tours to visit the Chapels, and the guide opens them up and each one has a different story. It certain worth a visit by anyone who wants tranquility around him.
