‪The bells of Agnone 🔔 ‬
חברים • ספט׳ 2020
‪We had been recommended a visit to the Agnone bell foundry.
It is located in the centre of Agnone, at the top of a side street and just a short stroll from the main road.
The foundry is entered through a gift shop that is best perused once the tour has been completed, in order to fully appreciate the handcrafted gifts on offer.
The entrance fee is €5 and includes a 15 minute extremely informative video on how a bell is made (this video is available in different languages)
I had never given the bell making process a huge amount of thought before, that was until I visited the Marinelli foundry. What a thoroughly interesting process it is and one that has remained unchanged for centuries. The bell makers and bell artists are true artisans and their finished products breathtaking.
I really enjoyed wandering through the foundry, following the video. We didn’t have a guide but the staff were happy for us to wander.
There is an exhibit area showing the visitor many of the different bells made over the years and some are mounted onto frames allowing them to be rung. These bells are huge and something I had only really viewed when looking up at a bell tower. The chimes of the different bells are delightful and it felt like a real treat to be able to ring them and see them up close.
Many of the Marinelli bells over the years have been made for the Vatican and other significant Italian landmarks. Their foundry has also been given the Papal seal.
Lastly the tour takes you through the working foundry. The smoke scented aroma from the wood fired furnaces really enhances the educational environment.
All in all a great place to visit.
A visit here only takes around an hour.

‪Best €5 spent in a long time! ‬
לבד • ינו׳ 2020

I had read about the Marinelli Bell Foundry and was intrigued enough to head up to the daily 430pm tour (1 of 2 a day). My Italian is basic so the English speaking guide was called for and the tour began despite me being the only customer. The tour started with a 15 minute video detailing the history of the foundry and the artisanal manufacturing of the bells. It was thoroughly interesting and I would defy anyone who has even the smallest interest in history not to lap it up. After the video came the tour of the museum, the foundry and the wax room - all in all including my time in the gift shop I was there an hour and a
happier 'cultural' hour I haven't spent
since my guided tour of The Taj Mahal, it truly was in such esteemed company - in my opinion.

Who knew how an artisanal bell was made, how long it takes and that each bell is 'baptised' before it leaves the foundry? The bell foundry is the oldest one in the World and the the 3rd oldest business in Italy - prepare to be impressed and see the oldest bell at 1040 years and the circumference and pics of the biggest bell in the world not to mention Papal memorabilia (a number of Marinelli bells can be found in Rome and Vatican City and the foundry has a Papal seal and was visited by Pope John Paul II - so much history and every bit thoroughly interesting. First part of bell making? creating The Soul
- pretty much sums up it for me! ‬

‪We had expected to have a brief and enjoyable visit to this bell foundry but, instead, had an extended and VERY enjoyable visit. Our guide, Ivo, was very informative and a pleasure to be with. We learned about the fascinating way in which a bell is made, the interesting history of bell making, and Marinelli's important role as a Pontifical bell foundry. Truly worth an hour or two. Then you can take walk through this quaint town for a coffee or gelati..‬

‪Foundry visit Agnone‬

‪I was in Agnone learning Italian and this was one of the places that we visited. Really interesting history and learning about how bells are made. Incredible to think that bells all over the world are made in this small city in the mountains.
Our tour was conducted in Italian, there were no English speaking people in the group that we went with. I would certainly recommend going for a visit it’s fascinating. This place has been going since the Middle Ages.‬

‪The art of making bells! ‬
משפחה • יולי 2018
‪This tour was recommended by our tour guide. To be honest I didn’t think it would be a good tour and never really gave much thought to making bells! I was pleasantly surprised at how much work goes into bell making. This company is the oldest family run bell company in the world. The technique and precise measures that go into each bell to achieve the right tone was astonishing. The person who gave the presentation didn’t really speak English very well but you got the idea when you went into the manufacturing area. Really great experience! If you are in this area I would definitely recommend a stop here. ‬

‪An Agnone must see!!!!!‬
זוגות • יולי 2018
‪I took a pilgrimage to Agnone to trace my family roots and ended up at The Marinelli bell foundry. (My grandmother was a Marinelli). We were walking around the grounds on an evening before dinner and happened to meet the owner Pasquale Marinelli. And amazing man who was so warm and welcoming. We received a private tour the next day with Ivo. Another outstanding man! The tour was so inspirational that I actually got chocked up. No bell the same with each being a work of art in its own right. If you find yourself in Agnone the tour is a must. ‬

‪We were disappointed with our visit as we just didn't know what was going on. We arrived at the visiting time listed on the website but the museum and shop were closed. We stood at the foundry doors which have do not enter signs and found that another couple were having a tour so we went in and the worker gave a signal that we could look around. The foundry looked interesting but we had to try to figure out what was what.
Finally we found someone to let us and the other couple into the museum but as he couldn't open the cash register he did not charge us. The museum is fascinating and explains the process of making bells with lots of exhibits.
Unfortunately once again there was no one in the shop as we left so we couldn't purchase anything as we left.‬

‪One of the few remaining bell foundries in Europe and one of the world's oldest businesses is a "must see" in Agnone. The tour was a highlight of our stay. The bells of Agnone that welcome the day and toll on time, and in turn are a delight.‬
