‪Worth the walk to visit. Not difficult to find. Stone foot prints ,"lead" the way.

Gives a great view of the beautiful town. ‬

‪Beautiful white washed village with fantastic views. Don’t miss the little gallery shop ‘the studio under the wall’ on your stroll. Beautiful photographs, artwork and souvenirs of lovely Comares, run by a friendly couple. ‬

‪I have some useful information to share on what to expect and the travel route.

The Route

If you are starting at the Coast Motorway A7 otherwise known as the E15, exit at Junction 272. Travel North along the A356. The fuel stations are infrequent so fill as soon as you exit the motorway Head North going away from the coast.away from the sea and the signposts will show Colmenar/A356.
About 5 miles up the road in a tiny settlement called Trapiche, take the slip lane in the centre of the road and head West and the signpost will sa Triana on the MA 3113. Beware as you approach Triana there are two unmarked crossroad where the road surface dips suddenly. Slow down for these two unmarked crossroad.
Continue through Triana and onto Benamargosa, in which town you are looking for a signpost for the MA 3107/ and it might say La Zubia. Turn right at the signpost. Head north withe sun behind you for several miles and look out for s signpost pointing West -COmares. Now you will start the ascent with many sharp bends and your speed has slowed.

Once you pass along a ridge and find a place to pull off the road, enjoy the views of the countryside. There is little traffic on this road but the locals travel fast so be careful on extreme bends of which there are many. The road climbs higher and the speed restrictions are 40 Kilometres per hour. Eventually you will see a sheer cliff face and White Painted building far above you. This is Comares and soon you will see a small junction signposting COMARES
Take this road up until you see a steep car park on the right and park here free of charge on the right.

The Town

!st Tour

You came here to see wonderful mountain top view looking North and you see other settlements as small white rectangles and looking south you see back as far as Velz-Malaga and provided there is no sea mist, you also view Torres Del Mar.

Depart you parked car and walk upwards through a rebuilt Town gateway/arch. Keep going a littleway and you come to the main town square. Ahead of you is a small tourist information office belonging to the local Council and inside the door are the usual pamphlets but ensure you get the town map. Back outside and a few yards towards the balcony is a hardwood door behind which are fully serviced toilets These are the best in the public domain but if you find the outer door locked go back into the tourist office and as for the door to be unlocked. Be aware that various institutions close fror Siesta, which is usually 2 - 5 pm
Once you have studied the sea view and the map,put you back to the sea view and realise that this town has twin peaks. there is a walk to the West and this will wander up to communications masts on the highpoint and enjoy wandering a medieval street layout with wonderful vistas down alleyways. You have been following a route/ruta marked by glazed tiles in the shape of footsteps inset into the alleyway floors. When you get to the very top search for open balconies looking West and see trees, the size of matchsticks on the skyline many miles away.

Wheelchair users and their guides will find the second secret road up to the town arrives here and this part of the town is therefore wheelchair accessible. You approach and park at a different place so wheel chair users get in touch with the town hall/ayuntamiento before you go. To date I have always found the church locked up on every visit but follow the sound of the quarter hour bells to locate it. You can also get down to the balconies/vistas to the north. These magnificent views are the best in town and still wheelchair accessible. There is a small playground both for adults and mature children here.

Did you find an extra tourist centre, post office? Were you accosted near the church by an insistent women who wants you to enter her house and buy the local dessert wine, and agricultural produce. I am advised she closes the door until you have parted with money Some people like the adventure/freissance of bartering process but if not continue on without stopping and eventually the woman will no longer follow you.

NOW A SECRET DETOUR.

Staying on this route/ruta pass the playground are and continue downhill on the north side. At the bottom of the incline, look North and some metres away see a much smaller version of the entry gate to the town, again a brick arch. This will take you to a strolling hour extension but you need moderate fitness to do it. It is a LITTLE WALK FOR HIKERS. continue through the archway and stay on the random stone road surface downhill until you come to a rough asphalte single track for vehicles. Turn left/Wst and continue downhill to you come to a stone fountain with what looks like two drinking troughs. The early settlers uses to get their water from here and remember in Moorish times this was a camel caravanserie route.
Once you have admired the Almond Orchards on this route, turn you back to the valley and look for the rough hewn single staiway upward again. There is a bare wooden bench here under a stone outcrop in case you need to rest. You will see wooden bennister posts with a thick (white) rope and follow the path upwards Some of the steps are highish but it is acheivable provided the rain has not made the stone/boulder steps path slippery. Take your time hugging the cliff and admiring the ironstone rock in places. Trees/shrubs grow out of the cracked vertical rockface. Eventually you come back to the random stone walkway you descended and you are close to the Northern arch/gateway again.

Once inside the archway you realise you are in the cleft/valley between the two town peaks You have completed the Western route/ruta.

2nd Tour

If you were not interested in the detour continue Eastward looking for the remains of what appears to be a sandstone castle on high Again follow the ceramic tile footsteps in the ground upwards. Do stop on terraces, admire small inset cupboards, houses and small terraces where you can rest and appreciate some sparse shrubbery/plants, which are more noticeable on this side of town. This route/ruta is shorter and you could have come straight from the town square. When you get to the highpoint of this peak, spend a little time near the flagpole but yuo have discovered a large terrace with brick seating facing the town. A good place to have lunch and admire the terraced white houses sitting on the adjoining peak, which you might have climbed first.

When rested arise and turn around and you will see the entrnace to a classic meditteranean cemetery. The tombs are stacked vertically in parralel 'walls'.

As ypucame through the gate there was a water point to your left and to the right around the corners there were UNLOCKED TOILETS but paper is not supplied and there is no access to the facilities once the cemetery gate is closed. close to the toilets looking South over the balcony is an outstanding view of the sea and you look a considerable distance often spotting weather patterns.

Final Thoughts

Comares high points are breezy in winter so dress appropriately at this high altitude. The walks offer little shade so in the hotter seasons, it would be best to do this trip early morning or evening when the heat subsides. The time travelling should take just over an hour from the motorway.
Only one of the cafes looks barely adequate and the other two are primitive. Taking refreshments there is a dampener on the wonderful aesthetics of the town so consider eating elsewhere or bringing refreshments Clearly civic pride and european grants have done splendidly for the Town fabric but catering has not kept pace. However this gem of a location is worth the drive from the motorway if you want to experience a day out of the hurly burly of tourist life.

Enjoy your 3+ hours here if you walk the two routes and the detour.

‪Before my boyfriend took me up to Comares for my first visit there, a friend warned us, "Beautiful, but beware of the señoras!" They will try to entice you in to sell you their wine and wares. We stepped around the tiled footsteps up, up, up through the village, and it was so quiet, I wondered what she was talking about. Then we came around one of the ruas, and I heard, "Hola! Hola! Hola!" We dipped our heads and ducked around another corner til her cries ceased. A beautiful walk with stunning views...and I don't mind the enterprise of these señoras, but it was good to have been informed before getting sucked in (I was not on a shopping mission and rarely am). Take lots of photos from every prospect; the town sits atop one of the highest points around.‬
