‪On top of Acadia; rung twice and nice!‬

‪Spanning almost 6 years between visits, I have climbed and hiked Acadia National Park's famed Precipice Path Trail on 2 separate occasions. In August 2022, when traveling with a hiking friend, we successfully hiked Precipice Path/Trail and Beehive Path/Trail on the same day. Comparing the two hikes: Precipice is a long hike with slippery rungs and moss, making for some scary areas. Beehive has an area prior to the climb where the rocks are slick and several hikers slipped. These hikers were not at the edge of the mountain and were not in any danger or falling off the face of the cliff. Beehive has far better views. Both hikes (Precipice and Beehive) have routes down the mountain which are difficult to navigate. Hikers are discouraged from going down via the "climb" and rungs on both hikes. Precipice is easier to navigate going down but you will need to walk along the road to get to your vehicle and trailhead. We were lucky enough on the hike in 2022 to catch the shuttle back to our vehicle. Again I stress that the Precipice first rung series is the hardest. If you can do this, then all the other rungs will be easily managed. This was my review in October 2016: Preparation: I watched the youtube videos and read the reviews well in advance. I prepared mentally and stayed in average shape prior to my trip to Acadia in September of 2016. Despite the foreboding elder at the trailhead warning me of the man who died earlier this year on the way down after reaching the summit, I remained confident that my boyfriend and I would make it to the top without any problems. It was an overcast day and we had been cautioned that the rocks could be slippery and we should tread carefully. Toward the Summit: Through the mist we made our way up the Precipice trail to the test rungs, which I only passed by throwing my pack up first then climbing up. I didn't have to throw my pack again which indicates the "test" is harder than any of the ladders and rungs along the trail. In my opinion, the rock scramble was the hardest part of this hike. I felt relatively safe throughout the hike and experienced no "fear of heights" (acrophobia). Reaching the summit was a rewarding experience. Navigation skills required to hike down Champlain Mountain: There are several ways to come down Champlain Mountain, the least recommended is the Precipice Trail. Reviews indicated the best route down would be via the Champlain Mountain North Ridge Trail (formerly Bear Brook Trail) which terminates on Park Loop Road just north of the Precipice Trailhead. There were several hikers we encountered who had planned the aforementioned route but took a wrong turn on the way down and ended up coming down Precipice Trail. I was convinced that I did not want to have the same fate and carefully read the signs and confirmed with my boyfriend who was following the trail on his Garmin. Bates' cairns and blue arrows guide the hiker in finding their way down and posted signs assist when selecting the correct route when there is a forks in the trail. Highlights: Climbing the ladders and rungs. Making the way to the summit and reaching the summit. Some say the view is amazing but we had too much mist/fog during our hike to have any photos worth posting. During my walk back to the car, I passed a large bird who quickly went into flight just as I noticed her. This bird was most likely a peregrine falcon. I have now learned that he females can be as large as 3 lbs. Recommendation: I am a beginner hiker but I have a few summits I have reached. I do not run or work out but I remain active throughout the year. I never recommend watching the sunset from the summit, as you will then be left coming down in the dark. This is a must do hike for the experience of the ladders and rungs.‬

‪Epic way to spend a birthday! My husband and two kids (11 and 13) agreed to do this hike with me for my birthday. It was incredible! Large boulders start the hike and there are a lot of ladders and rungs and footholds up the side of the mountain (several sections being completely vertical). It’s tricky at spots and steep and exhilarating! We did Beehive the day before. Precipice is a decent bit longer and definitely more challenging than Beehive in our opinion and very much worth the hike!‬

‪I was extremely excited to do this trail because of the difficulty level. Certainly lived up to it. This is quite the adrenaline rush. Partner and I are both hikers, in fit shape and we were able to do this easily but it was not without some sweat and fear creeping in here and there. We did this hike after a downpour of rain. We waited for the rain to subside and then proceeded along. I don’t recommend doing the trail during it immediately following a downpour. Well, some spots were slippery and rungs were also nonexistent in certain areas so that was somewhat scary. Amazing experience and would do it again. Saw some folks turning back once they saw the rungs. I would caution not to attempt if you have serious fear of heights, 0 hiking experience or does not have even basic climbing skills. If you are out of shape, you will certainly have great difficulty as well. Lots of lifting your body up using the rungs so certainly be aware of this. Lots of other amazing trails in Arcadia that you can experience. Cheers, be safe and enjoy!‬

‪This is the best most dangerous most fun trail ,I have been on since Angel's Landing at Zion. Anyone can hike up to the dangerous cliff at Angel's but NOT everyone can do the vast majority of this hike.

Note : this hike is only available August thru October due to bird nesting and is not available during or recently after precipitation.

If you struggle with the bouldering at the beginning (there is no trail), take the orange and black trail.

After the bouldering comes a series of metal ladder rungs going straight up with short breaks along ledges with hold bars. There is no fence. There is no safety catch. There is not a landing spot if you slip and fall. The series of rungs are 4 to 5 at a time and my guess is there are at least 10 of these series, possibly more. One of the last ones requires a reach around from one series to another.

If you are short, overweight, or⁰⁰⁰00‬

‪I am afraid of heights and almost didn’t do this trail, after reading many reviews, I decided to give it a try.

Honestly, the hardest obstacle to get over was the first one. Someone offered to help me and I told them no because I wanted to make sure I could handle the trail.

Where it gets a little tricky, there are places to hold onto. And the rungs at the end are split up- no worse than climbing to the top of a house each time. There was one spot at the very top that I had to focus on not looking down. There were bars to hold onto but there was a pretty sheer drop off. It was only a few steps though and to me, that was the hardest part.

The view at the top is beautiful, but I think the Beehive is just as pretty, if not prettier.

The walk down was beautiful. You can climb up that way if you don’t want to do the rungs.

I am a female pushing 60 and keep active. I saw some men in their 20’s struggling more than me, and some people that were older struggling less. My advice is to just take it slow and listen to your body. And good shoes are a must!!!‬

‪If you enter from the Orange and Black Path, there is a warning sign, but it is not well situated, and because the Orange and Black Path has what we thought were some scary parts, we thought the sign was referring to the part we had already traversed. As a result we went up this trail without really knowing what we were getting into. We were lucky we were there early, had good footwear and were appropriately dressed.

Before starting this trail we did not know the meaning of scary. You cannot ascend without climbing multiple sets of iron bars, which go straight up like a ladder in some places, and twist around unseen corners of the cliff in others. There are also narrow portions of the trail where you have nothing to hang onto, and a trip or a slip could easily be fatal. The trail is generally pretty narrow and if you need a break to wipe your sweaty palms and calm down your breathing, you have to wait until the trail allows it--in many areas there is nowhere to stop. This is absolutely not a trail to do in bad weather.

The bars were actually the fun part of the trail. I felt safe on them. I did not feel particularly safe on some other parts of the trail that had no handholds, especially when I could see that some of the rocks were still wet. The views are spectacular, though you can ascend to the top via another trail.

There were four of us ranging from mid 50's to early 60's--the least athletic person hikes maybe once a month for an hour or two. None of us found the trail to be physically exhausting--the challenge is more psychological. The trail is probably doable for most people who are moderately active like us but I don't recommend for people with a strong fear of heights or anyone who has balance issues. Know that there is at least some risk--if you would never go skydiving, you probably shouldn't do this trail.

Days later we are still talking about this hike.‬

‪I have a fear of heights and this is exactly something you don't do when you have this fear. I, however, went against my sweaty palms and noodle legs and up the mountain I went. My boyfriend saw a whole new side of me and I'm wondering if he still wants to marry me. I basically scampered up the mountain and never looked down, up, to the side, heck, I'm surprised my eyes weren't closed the whole time. Great. My palms are getting sweaty again.

Honestly, it's beautiful. The rungs you climb and the bars you shimmy across could probably be better placed at some points, or more of them. Actually, can someone just let me koala them up the mountain?

Wear good shoes with grab, do not climb when it's wet (leaves and boulders will be your death, seriously), and prepare for an amazing view at the top!

And when you start descending down a different path, you'll ask yourself why the heck you didn't just go up that way to begin with.‬

‪I was terrified to do this trail before I began. I would say I am oderately afraid of heights, far more than my hiking buddies who seemed unphased. I talked myself up and worked up the courage and I am glad that I did. The initial portion of the trail is bouldering, then you climb about 0.6 miles up the mountain on a combination of iron ladders and rungs secured into the mountain to reach the summit. At the summit the views are breathtaking! When you are mid climb you feel very safe. I am afraid of heights, but the level of detail and intentionality put into the ladders and iron handlebars made me feel very safe. At no point did I feel like my life was at risk. Was I super afraid before doing this trail that I almost pooped my pants? yes. Now that I’ve done it and experienced it, Would I do this trail again? absolutely!!
Also, if you can do beehive then you can do precipice. Precipice is like beehive but 0.6 miles longer in the ascent.‬

‪This was harder and more dangerous than expected. I took my 9 year old son who is very capable and a somewhat experienced hiker. I had to give him two or three boosts. In hindsight, I would've waited until he was probably 12 years old. I recommend this hike, but it is no joke and you have to be capable.‬

‪This is not a hiking trail. It is a non-technical climbing trail. That means, while you don’t need ropes and such to climb, you will be climbing almost the entire time. There is no stretch of flat ground to walk on, you are always climbing over rocks, boulders, and or ladders. In many places you need to pull yourself up over rocks. There are helpful handholds in some places. In some places the handholds are required, i.e, you can’t get up without them. If you have a fear of heights, have knee or balance issues, or can’t do some serious climbing this is not the trail for you. This is also not a trail for young kids. You may want to wear pants or you may scrape your knees or legs as in some cases you need to climb with knees first and you’ll need a good pair of shoes with a good grip as in some places, the granite can be a bit smooth. Also, you need patience, as the trail is narrow, you can’t really pass and when we were there, we saw a few people who really shouldn’t have been on that trail, causing a huge hold up for everyone else. We came down a different trail then switched back to this one which was a huge mistake as we had to wait for the crowd going up. Also watch out for snakes. We saw one and it didn’t feel great to be forced to place your hands (to pull yourself up) in the same area where the snake had disappeared. But, with all those comments over, if you aren’t afraid of heights, have good balance and good knees and arm strength, this was a very fun trail to climb. I’d definitely do it again.‬
