‪Best Hike in Theodore Roosevelt National Park‬
ספט׳ 2021
‪This is by far the best hike in the entire 3 units of Theodore Roosevelt Park. While it is ashamed that road work on the parking lot prevents access to the trailhead, we were able to hike it from the River Bend Overlook. Instead of a loop we hiked out and back on the best part of the trail along the badland ridge going east from the overlook that has impressive views of the Little Missouri Valley. The entire trail is 4.4 miles with almost 600 vertical feet of elevation. The section we hiked was a little more than 2 miles and around 300 feet. While I would have loved to hike the entire loop, this section did provide the best views and pictures.

Again hiking the ridgeline of the badlands with views of the valley was incredible and made for pictures. Each view seemed better than the one before. The colors of the badlands mixed with the rich greens of the valley grasslands and rare deciduous forest were simply something you have to see. Yes, most people who visit TRNP only see Medora and the South Unit. If you do that you cheat yourself out of the most beautiful part of the park that really makes it a national treasure. Plan ahead to make sure you can visit the North Unit and hike this trail from the River Bend Overlook.‬

‪Half of the trail was great other half …‬

‪We started at the second parking lot not the main trailhead. The main trail head parking was closed. We went counterclockwise. I think it’s a good idea to do most of the elevation first. The first section gives nice views up on a ridge. Once you cross the road we lost interest. The trail seems longer than expected. There isn’t any shade or places to easily find a place to stop and eat. Bring lots of water.‬

‪This is a beautiful and, as it turned out, an exciting hike. We were hiking and taking plenty of photos on the well-maintained trail. On the way back, we spotted three buffalo on the trail. The buffalo saw us as well. We hike up a ridge and waited them out. This was a good lesson for me as I wore regular tennis shoes rather that hiking boots. There was a ton of cacti everywhere on the ridge. Always be prepared even if you think you're going on an easy hike!‬

‪Caprock Coulee was one of our favorite hikes! You hike thru the nature trail area then praire/grasslands and then rock formations. Scenery kept changing. Total hike is around 4 miles.‬

‪Must do in North Unit TRNP‬
אוג׳ 2019
‪This trail is a must do in the North Unit of Teddy Roosevelt National Park. It is a decent challenge for the avid hiker. Takes some time, mainly because of the awww moments with the scenery, esp as you climb to the top. The views are amazing. Didn't see much wild life on this trail although there were signs they had been on or near the trail. We got down from the hike and off the trail just before a end of summer thunderstorm hit, so try to get there early in the day and finish before these blow up. On this trail, you will walk through dust, grass, TALL grass, experience elevation, bend through deep underbrush... all of it! Also, special note...dogs are not allowed on hikes in the national park. Dickinson is near by and has a great place for day boarding your dog. Boomers Boarding was wonderful for our pup...clean, safe, fun...all you would want for your 4 legged travel buddy while you get to experience the hikes at the national park.‬

‪The whole Shebang in one loop‬
אוג׳ 2018
‪We originally had planned to skip the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park but am very glad we didn't. We had driven the 36 mile car route in the South Unit which had some very nice views, but this trail is stunning. You get the hills, the river valley, overlooks, and animals (Buffalo) all in one package. Allow 3 hours. Bring water; there are some days that are quite warm and once you get out of the treeline, there is virtually no shade. Moderate level of difficulty; even the uphills are not too long. I would recommend starting with the Caprock-Coulee Nature trail and going around the loop in a counter-clockwise direction. ‬

‪Buffalo thrills and dodging drops‬

‪Great hike, but could use some weed whacking in places. Came upon a stubborn buffalo on the trail and had to wait him out a bit. Then on the way down from the overlook, we scampered through some big raindrops, which made the trail slick. Just added to the experience. Wonderful hike‬

‪Fun Hike‬

‪This hike goes around the perimeter of parts of the park and offers good vistas of the varieties of landscape. It can be muddy and actually dangerous to hike if there has been recent rain. ‬

‪Great Hike‬
משפחה • יוני 2017
‪The Caprock-Coulee Trail is located near the center of the North Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The North Unit is located about 65 miles north of the South Unit. It is also located about 16 miles south of Watford City, ND. This is a 4.3 mile trail and is listed as a moderate to strenuous hike on the National Park Service website. The hike starts on the Scenic Drive highway and then gradually climbs to the top of a grassy butte. One stop on the trail is the River Bend Overlook at about the 3 mile point. After the lookout you climb along a ridgeline and then start to walk back down to the car.

I went on this great hike with my family on a Sunday afternoon in mid-June and really enjoyed it. I have hiked in several National Parks and thought this was one of the better trails. A Park Ranger recommended that we hike counterclockwise so we gradually climbed first instead of starting with a steep climb at the beginning of the hike. The last mile of this trail is the best and the views are well worth the effort to get up on top. Resting at the River Bend Overlook was great as the views there were fantastic. It took us about 3-4 hours to complete this hike but there were 10 of us and we stopped several times. The trail was well marked and we did not have any trouble staying on it. We only saw 3 other hikers on the trail (except at the Overlook where there were lots of people).

I really enjoyed this hike and definitely recommend the Caprock-Coulee Trail. I plan on doing this hike on a future trip to this National Park (we may camp here every summer from now on). It takes a while to drive to the North Unit but this hike is worth it. The trail is a bit overgrown in parts so you might want to wear long pants on this hike (I did).‬
