This 13 century castle-convent consists of three walled enclosures. First , faces the south, there is the Gate of the Sun, the entrance to the castle. The gate is made of volcanic stone, like the arches of the cloister.
Parking is at the castle free.

The castle dominates the surrounding region. It's impressive.
Inside, there is an ongoing reconstruction goimg on.
The buildings are quite rudimentary.
Good pannel explanations.
Don't expect to see riches here.

Equipped with a convenient parking, the Castle of great proportions appears perched on a peak from which dominates the entire plain north of the Sierra morena. Despite being largely in ruins, the Castle is easily visited thanks to a guided tour. The Church of the Knights of Calatrava is noteworthy, a beautiful Cistercian Romanesque with a monumental Gothic rose window. Really very impressive. It is curious that there is no sale of books on the Calatrava and other cavallerski orders, or on the Reconquista.

We took a couple of hours and took a self-guided tour of this Castle. What a find! Very interesting and the views of the surrounding valleys were spectacular.

My husband is mad about anything historical and then you say Castilla ( Castle) he’s even more excited. We went one afternoon and were lucky to get a guided tour. It was amazing. The history behind is place is wonderful. A must visit. Wear comfortable shoes and there is a lot of walking involved.

Traveled with a group of US students. Fantastic site full of history and culture. Loved the views and imagining life here many years ago. Informational signs in both english and spanish help to explain what you are looking at. Small gift store. Bathrooms available.

Early morning the Convent emerged out of the mist on the hill top.
Fortunately it was open so the tour commenced.
Some parts are furnished and it is a worth while stop.

This is an amazing castle, rich in Moorish history and partly restored by a wealthy gentleman. The castle is still owned by his descendants, I believe. There is a small entry fee to explore the rooms and access the ramparts by steep stone steps. If stone steps are not your thing, there are lots of areas that you can explore without many stairs. We had no problem accessing the castle with our small rental car. The views of the valley from the castle are impressive. Don't miss it!

This is off the CR504 road, about 25 km south from Almagro, the drive up, off the main road, is a twisty one on a fairly gravelly and cobbled surface. However, once at the top, our efforts were amply rewarded. The huge old castle and convent dates from 12th Century, and was one of the fortified bases for the "soldier priests" of the Calatrava order who fought the Moors. Later, King Alphonso 10th built what is now Cuidad Real in order to try to keep the Calatravans under control! There is an entrance fee, not much, after which you are free to wander the castle, and wonder at the amazing views from its commanding position. You need to be relatively agile as there are some steps. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours.

This castle complex housed a key outpost of the military conquest of the south of Spain, known as the Reconquista. Not just a castle but a convent and self-sustaining community, perched on the hilltop. Part ruin, part restored, it conjures up a powerful impression of mediaeval life, with stunning views of the surrounding scenery.
Access looks difficult, with not very obvious signage and rough cobbled track. Taken slowly and with care, it is quite negotiable, however, even with a standard saloon car. CLOSED MONDAYS.
Restaurant nearby for lunch and/or dinner. Ask at cash desk.
