‪What a shame!‬

‪Nice historical site with interesting information about the British soldiers totally spoiled by no control with regards to covid. Bunkers with a little sign «  only 5 persons allowed » packed with 10 to 20 people, many not even wearing their masks properly.
When I complained at the front desk the poor woman said she was alone for the entire site.
I filed a complaint at the tourist information center. The very kind staff said they had budget cuts due to previous covid costs...
So you have the right to pay full price for not even 1/4 of the visit and no safety rules enforced...

‪An eye-opening and moving visit‬
אוג׳ 2020
‪This was a really good museum and I really enjoyed it. I was not aware of the heroic exploits of the men from the Parachute Regiment who seized the Merville Battery. There is a superb sound and light show which illustrated the ferocity of the fighting. It also had a profound impact on my wife and sons.‬

‪A dangerous Covid-19 factory -- be warned.‬
אוג׳ 2020
‪NOTE: This is scored "2" instead of "1" out of respect for the brave men who died in this place. The score also does not represent the place (which is fascinating) but the dangerous way this is being run.

This is a fascinating little museum that tells the story of a small group of extremely brave British paratroopers that attacked and took this strategic battery that could shell D-Day landing beaches.
But the day was really spoiled by what I can only describe as a complete lack of awareness over the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic. The site has 4 main bunkers and some smaller places underground that you can visit. The largest of the bunkers has an audio visual presentation which runs every 20 mins that I'm told is terrific. On the day it was 34 degrees and while there was a small notice advising only 5 people inside at one time, but it was packed for each show with maybe 20-30 people. Very dark, very hot and very sweaty and people were squeezed in together, touching display cabinets and bumping into each other. Yes, they were wearing masks, but this was simply a crazy Covid factory where the museum takes ZERO responsibility. The other bunkers were essentially the same. I wasn't going to write this review, but after a response on twitter I thought it had to be made more public. They should, as an absolute minimum position a member of staff on the entrances to limit access to small numbers. This was reckless.

On twitter I wrote:
"@BatteryMerville I wanted to let you know that the bunkers felt very Covid unsafe yesterday. Crowded with people and no staff limiting access. In my opinion it was reckless and a potential Covid factory with so many people squeezed together in a hot and dark place.

They replied:
"Sorry if you feel uncomfortable during your visit. We displayed all the recommendations and sanitary measures ate the entrance of each bunkers. After that we count on the good respect of the measures by the public especially that we have a vast and open site."

The measures, as far as I could see, were bottles of anti-bac in the shop, and then small signs at the entrances to the bunkers that were easily missed. There was no anti-bac anywhere else on the site that I could see.

This is simply not good enough, they must take responsibility for the safety of their visitors. That does not appear to be anything more than lip service.‬

‪We visited Musée de la batterie de Merville in June 2020.

The museum is uncommon as it is on an actual battlefield.
Visitors follow a path between the casemates to learn about the parachute regiment who assaulted the batterie ; the assault ltself; the German perspective ; life in the casemates.

While larger museums like the memorial of Caen will give you a more comprehensive understanding of D-day and WWII, small museum like Musée de la batterie de Merville allow to put faces on the story on both sides. You get to know some soldiers and officers, and make their courage and sacrifice even more sobering.

If you would like to see more bunkers, I recommend a détour to the site "Hillman".

Highly recommended.‬

‪Visited this place in the rain. You get a map and English-language handout. It is a self guided tour follow the numbers. Start at number 1. They have many bunkers, inside some have a film playing, or a theme set up. So e have room set up of the time period. One had a sign warning of loud noises of the battle in progress. At the end you get to see some airplanes of the time. One they were in the process of restoring with details signs of progress and cost involved.‬

‪I visited the Merville Battery with 27 work colleagues as part of a battlefield study. I had visited several years earlier but was extremely impressed with the new additions and update.
The DC10 addition adds a new dimension and the photos of the crew on its reveal was quite moving.
The film footage within the bunker was extremely poignant and again added to the whole experience. What a feat of heroism in its day. ‬

‪Famous for its early part in the D-Day landings, mans courage despite everything achieved the intended goal. The sacrifice of many is well brought home, the sound and light experience in one of the bunkers gives an insight into the horror of events. You leave informed and thankful to those who gave their lives for our freedom.

‪Nice historic D Day site ‬
חברים • אוק׳ 2019
‪It’s a really good D Day story of the bravery of the amazing British paratroopers , and well told.

Sadly none of the original or replacement guns are in place, but still worth a visit, lots of internal details to see.

The Dakota drop plane on site , is another wonderful restoration story and well told and laid out.

My only gripe , small as it may seem, if your charging 8€ to get in, please ensure the toilets are “spic and span” inc a toilet seat would help, and reduce “Toilet hover”

Thanks
