If you luck into a warm fall day like I did, you will marvel at ruins from three epochs, with no sounds but wind knocking ripe olives to the ground.
I'm mostly writing this to share intel on how to get there from Catanzaro Lido without a car. Bus 267 goes a few times a day with an odd schedule. I was alone on the 9:30 bus from Piazza Anita Garibaldi (no sign, of course, but there's a metal shelter in front of a jewelry store where you'll see people waiting) which wound around a while and left me right at the front gate.
I had a fabulous visit and was ready to go by 12. I don't trust bus routes in Italia with no posted signs (and sometimes not even then). The schedule online said the next return bus was leaving the end of the line at 1PM from Via Risorgimento (kind of a frontage road between the park and the bridge back to CzL.). When I arrived that morning I asked the driver where to find the return stop and he said "over along the highway", which was probably accurate but not helpful.
The night before I thought hard about just walking there, because I saw a pedestrian lane via Google Maps street view (and even pedestrians on it!). Which was in my mind when I asked the 3 very nice docents in the reception building where to find the bus back. Not one of them had ANY idea, but they were very dubious it was Via Risorgimento. Fortunately I asked if one could just walk, and one immediately said "certo". He walked me back to the gate and directed me through the little settlement there to the "Pasta Fresca" restaurant on the south side of the highway. From there, walk past the tire shop and (carefully!!) up the ramp to the walkway on the bridge. In 20 minutes or so it will guide you to an offramp on the other side where you'll come out not far from Piazza Garibaldi (a block from where I'm staying!) If you like walking at all and the weather's decent, save the €5 and just hike it. Take a big water bottle if you do it both ways.
If you are really adventurous, you might be able to just walk down the beach. The river right now is really shallow so it looks like you could ford it along the waterline (I was curious so walked down the beach to check). As always be very wary of running water especially as torrential downpours are getting more common in Italia. If you can hike by the bridge or take a taxi. It's worth it. The bus is a waste, which is a shame because they just started the service a few months ago. Park entry is cheap so the taxi would be worth it. Just go (closed Mondays!)

This was worth a trip if your in the area to see the history of the area. The displays on the museum area were interesting. I would recommended going on a slightly cooler day as there is little shade so does get hot. Also bring water and they only have vending machines at select places and no other cafe etc because it’s very hot there.

A huge site, well explained, and a modern museum with a number of unexpectedly good and/or unusual exhibits. We spent more than 2 hours wandering around the site and then took advantage of the on-site bar.
The were some signs of neglect on the site. The waste baskets scattered around the site we all over-flowing with rubbish. There are two sets of toilets - inside and outside the museum. In both, the condition of the ladies' toilets would have been too embarrassing to offer them to guests in one's home!

We stopped here in the afternoon, it was very hot and might be more enjoyable during the cooler months. It was comparable to seeing the ruins at Olympia in Greece, not much left of course but great explanations and the museum was nice too. Nice to see if you are in the area.

Great site, fairly easy to navigate but very hot in August obviously. Nice little museum with a few English explanations. There is a small bar for drinks and ice-cream afterwards.

Visiting the Calabria means, for the most part of the tourists, spending their time on many wonderful beaches, relaxing and enjoing, alone or with their children, the very beautiful sea. But, never forget to visit the Scolaciun archaeologic park! You'll fell like a inhabitant of the past when you cross the big forest of olive trees and in front of you, suddenly, you will find the history. A big anfiteatro, the rests of the ancient Magna Graecia, are under your eyes and your fingers. The atmosphere can be incredible: you can heard only the birds, the noise of the fronds. During the summer, many perfomances of famous artists are hosted in this stunning frame. Then, the music, as so as the voice of an ancient greek chorus, bring you in the past, like a dream. Let you learn how unforgettable can be this experience!

This place is really magical especially late at night. I attended a concert in Aug 2017 and confirm that this was an extraordinary moment. The wind, the moon and the lights it will remain unforgettable. A must-do if you are visiting and there is a concert.

Set among old olive trees with broad trunks, one can see remains of structures dating back to Greek times. There is a small but nice museum on the premises. Right inside the entrance stands the remains of a Norman era cathedral. Definitely worth a visit!

Really surprising visit, brilliant value and fascinating. Some incredible treasures have been recovered in fantastic condition. We were the only ones there pretty much, we had total freedom to wander around. Great day.

If you are travelling through this area you should stop & take the time to explore this ancient Roman site. We went on a Tuesday morning & there were very few people so the place had this very calm & peaceful atmosphere as we walked through the old olive groves, past the ruins of the church & around the excavated areas of the ancient city. There is also a good museum housed in the old villa buildings with artefacts excavated from the site. The only thing I would comment on that was not so good was that there was not a great deal of English written interpretation in the museum to describe history. Outside in the ruins they did have this available on signs which helped us understand the history of this magnificent site. You need to go by car & plenty of free parking & toilets on site. Recommend

Ciao!
Immagino sia possibile studiare all’interno ma se lo vorrai fare nell’area archeologica dovrai pagare il biglietto di ingresso (5€) mentre se rimarrai solo ed esclusivamente nella zona bar suppongo di no.

How rough (difficult to walk around) is the site? Are there lots of stairs without handrails or areas with steep slopes or places where you have to take very big steps up or down? My mother and I both have some mobility issues so I need to know whether we will be able to see much of the site?

The park is very good, large and easy, but the floor is in ground with little stones. Only few area are too much strong, steep slope as the amphitheater. There was a big town, but you can visit what you need, as the museum where there are marvelous statues of roman age. Perhaps if you need, I can give you the contact of a staff that is at the management of the area
