‪If you like ruined castles this is a good one. Commanding views. If you get past the first 100 yards driving you can drive all the way as this is a rather long hike.‬

‪Was a good way to get my 4 year old intrested to come up, we were staying in a hotel 5 minutes drive from here so came for a short visit. Nothing to read, but costs nothing and can walk anywhere. Was amazing to think how old it was and how steep it was to walk, took our car was steep and narrow but ok to park at top and no else when we were there. Well worth a visit‬

‪Where else but Spain can you literally find a 12th century castle without knowing it's there until you see it? Regards, OldeBear‬

‪The Almonacid dominates the local landscape. I admired it from afar on horseback, and decided to visit. Though it is now partially in ruins, it is still a highly interesting site and very important in Spanish history. It was well worth visiting and is highly recommended.‬

‪This castle just outside of Toledo was a great stop for our family. We drove the scary dirt road in the rental car, and had the place to ourselves, wandering amidst the ruins and imagining all of the history that might have taken place here. There was no information posted at the site, we only had a little to read in our Rick Steves book. But the views of the area were sweeping and it was nice to just walk in the ruins.‬

‪Tricky to find, we stopped and viewed the castle from the bottom of the hill. It was quite a sight. It was the former residence of El Cid from time to time. Did not visit but wished we had time to do so. looked interesting.‬

‪If you are traveling between Toledo & Granada, this castle is definitely worth checking out. It is just off of the main highway, and not too difficult to get to. You can see it for quite a while as you drive along the highway. You just drive straight through the sleepy village of Almonacid de Toledo. You can take your car right up to the castle on a scary dirt road that is very narrow and bumpy with crazy switchbacks. The moorish castle was built in the 7th century, and the ruins are in bad shape. You can have the run of the entire castle remains to yourself, along with birds and rabbits that call it home now. It overlooks the village below.‬

‪Its just a big old ruin on top of a hill. Its really quite large, there is no fee hence no barriers and you can climb about as you wish. The central castle still has quite a bit of roof and the walls are all still visible. Great views from up there.

I would add two photos but upload is not working for some reason.‬

‪It's huge and ruined but very interesting to spend half an hour just exploring it, you can walk of across a trail to the other hill top to get views back to the castle.‬

‪If you're driving from Toledo to Granada, this is right on the way. It's an old castle ruin perched on the hilltop above the little village of Almonacid. You have to drive through the middle of town on narrow cobblestone streets to get there-- we repeatedly circled the church and had to ask for directions 3 times, but finally found the start of the dirt road that goes in switch-backs up to the castle. We weren't quite brave enough to take to rental car up the dirt road, and hiked instead, but the locals drive right up to the top. It's a desolate ruin, with no tourist markers, and no ticket booth. You can wander around and admire La Mancha spread out below you.‬
