‪We always make it a point to tour the cathedrals of the cities we are visiting in Europe - they are always in the center of town and usually open during our walks. St.Andre is, of course impressive, but there was nothing of distinction, particularly on the interior. We toured the cathedral in Bayonne the following day as we traveled to Donostia and it was far more interesting and impressive. ‬

‪This is a beautiful church and a must-see when visiting Bordeaux. Be sure to view it from the inside and the outside. It does close for a period of time in the afternoon so be sure to check the hours if you want to go in.‬

‪The cathedral itself is stunning both inside and outside. We were so impressed with the architecture. Enjoyed the gothic spires with decorative portals. Lots of amazing stained glass. We climbed the Pey-Berland Tower for a great view of the city and the cathedral flying buttresses. This is definitely a "must do" attraction when visiting Bordeaux.

The cathedral is surrounded by restaurants and cafes and shops. Great location to explore for us tourists.‬

‪Truly impressive, huge scale church in a pretty setting. Easy to reach on foot, by bus or tram, lots of cafes around it. Much has been beautifully cleaned and glows in the sun a gorgeous gold honey colour. The history is well explained, including the reinforcing needed, creating the elegant flying buttresses.
Interesting to see the St James links, which extend along many pavements in the city with the special brass plaques.
Also recommend you climb the tower - get there early (11am?) and no need to book. Stunning views and an exciting experience.‬

‪Saint-André Cathedral is the most statuesque in Aquitaine. The expression of this was the inclusion in the World Heritage List in 1998. However, UNESCO has qualified it as one of the most important points of the pilgrimage route to Santiago di Compostela. Without disputing the importance of the cathedral as a super-site of medieval tourism, I note that it entered the history of France differently. Two marriages were concluded within the walls of the cathedral, which played a great role in the history of the country: the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine with Louis VII in 1137 and the marriage of the Spanish Infanta Anna of Austria with Louis XIII in 1615. The first marriage ended in divorce, as a result of which Eleanor of Aquitaine managed to become Queen of England for 35 years after being Queen of France for 15 years. As a result, Aquitaine came under the rule of the English Plantagenets, which caused the war, which in the XIX century will be called the Centennial. The "fortress" of the second marriage was described in a fascinating way by Alexander Dumas in his magnum opus "The Three Musketeers". By the way, the English period of possession of Bordeaux was reflected in the interior of the cathedral in the form of an abundance of sculptures on the doors. As befits every respected European cathedral, Saint-André was built on the site of previous churches and was built for a long time. In 1096, it was consecrated by Pope Urban II, the ideologue of the First Crusade. It is clear that at the time of construction the cathedral had a Romanesque appearance. The walls of the IX century have been preserved in the nave of the current cathedral, but the entire cathedral was rebuilt in the Gothic style. A major role in financing reconstruction in the XIV century was played by Pope Clement V, a Gascon by birth, who moved the Holy See to Avignon and initiated the so-called "Avignon captivity". In the XV century, the construction of the Tour Pey-Berland tower was started. By tradition, it was erected separately from the cathedral in order to reduce the impact of resonance from the bells on the cathedral structure. In general, despite the eclecticism caused by centuries of reconstruction, the cathedral makes a strong impression. Two 81-meter towers frame the facade, giving it a completely Gothic look. Contrary to the canons, the entrance to the cathedral is on the north side. In the eastern part there is a choir, chapels with balustrades diverge from it. Both the choir and the chapels were built in the XIV century. To promote humility in worldly life, the cathedral is decorated with scenes of the Last Judgment, which are diluted with less interesting sculptures of apostles, martyrs and bishops, with which the Catholic Church is so rich. Some of them are buried in the crypt, but this is quite a funerary theme fans.‬

‪The seat of Bordeaux' archdiocese is also the largest religious building of the city, a Gothic cathedral with some special features, like the separate bell tower, the Tour Pey-Berland. The main entrance to the cathedral is by the north transept with two thin spires, that with 81 meters are higher than the bell tower. There are two other gates at this church, the Portail Royal on the northern side of the nave and the Portail at the southern end of the transept.

The church was built between the 12th and the 15th century, so different styles of Gothic architecture can be found here. In a list of the 10 or more most beautiful Gothic cathedrals of France, the one of Bordeaux will not be included. Inside can be found stained glass windows and a big organ with a complicated history, for which there is a detailed information board in French underneath it.

The cathedral once also had a cloister, but this was torn down end of the 19th century. Consecrated by a pope in the 11th century, the pre-Gothic building saw the wedding in 1137 of 15-year old Eleonor of Aquitaine with the future king of France, Louis VII, then one year older than her. Another royal children's wedding took place - now in the already Gothic building - in 1615 between the two 14-years old Anne of Austria, daughter of the King of Spain, and the King of France, Louis XIII. 23 years later their famous son, Louis XIV, the 'Sun King', was born.

Together with two other churches of Bordeaux, the Basilique Saint-Michel and the Basilique Saint-Severin plus several more religious structures all over France the Saint Andrew Cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site under 'Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France', a couple of years before 'Bordeaux, Port of the Moon' was included in that list.‬

‪Big cathedral with huge square and open space around. Great architecture. Shops surround the square. Easily accessible. Tram stop exactly in front of Cathedral.‬

‪Dedicated to the fishermen of men's souls. Site of the marriage of 13-year old Eleanor of Aquitaine to teen-ager Louis VII (soon to assume the throne within months) and location of the marriage of Louis III to Anne of Austria thereby cementing the connectivity between France and Spain.

A lot happened here.

And the church itself underwent transformations: Romanesque, French Gothic, and Renaissance were the many faces this lovely wore. Began before 1170, it's low point was being converted into a horse feed facility during 1793 (Napoleon). But then there was a fire in 1787. And who can forget the French Revolution? How about world wars one and two?

And it is still standing?

Today, thanks to the fact that buildings were built up against its back and sides, the anti-clerical forces during the revolution did not discover all the facades. The Tympanium (interesting decoration above the front door) circa 1200-1250 was one of the treasures hidden. And we get to admire it today. How lucky are we?

The intricate archivolt (layers of trim around the doors) is complex, highly ornate, and depicts what can only be imagined as holy people from the bible.

And, for us the most interesting piece of info to chew on was the (in French) info board concerning missionaries in the East. Converting Mongols to Christianity endured for ages. The church responded by making the Cathedral more aesthetically palatable to the new converts by making it (visually) more in tune with their culture (and that is a big umbrella).

The Muslim/Islamic/Oriental paint scheme and decorative patterns were so obviously designed to welcome and encourage these new converts along their way to Christianity.

Not to be missed.‬

‪Unfortunately, the pretty cathedral of amazing Bordeaux was closed at the time we passed by … but on the square behind the church we saw the ugliest Christmas “tree” in mankind (se enclosed photo). Unforgettable.‬
