Bit of a feedback @Berlin-Marathon 2024:
Appalling low number of toilets at the start means people queued for 70 minutes and lost their wave
Plastic glasses at the water stations make a real mess and you chocke wild trying to drink. Also, don’t put them where the street is narrow
The Maurten gel is sticky on the tarmac! Don’t give it to the runners!
Food: bananas and apples only: really??
Too many people running with headphones on
People pushing wheelchair regularly hit people trying to
zig zag and overtake them
Music too loud under bridges
Expo: poor signs/direction, too crowded/small. Staff not knowing what they did and made mistakes in giving the merchandise
Lastly: too many runners
I did a PB but this is my last Berlin marathon for sure. Bit disappointing for an Abbot major

Participated in the marathon as my first international race. I’m used to expos and races being very organized and full of fun experiences in the US. Unfortunately, Berlin didn’t live up to the same hype. The expo is held at Templhof Airport, which may require two different trains if you are staying north of Brandenburg Gate. Once you enter, everyone flocks to the first info sign they see not realizing you need to continue further down to the end of the hall and go outside and down steps to get in a long line. They have food trucks set up outside. If you don’t have your QR code printed, you can go to a tent, and they can look you up and print one for you. You will need this QR code to enter the line outside. After you are scanned, and your passport or ID is checked proceed forward to get a wristband. This band should stay on you until you complete the race. Finally, just as you enter the expo, you’ll get a participant bag. This bag had a tiny packet of protein balls, a tiny bar of soap, and a sample of prebiotics. Nothing else. Inside you’ll pass table after table selling items. There are no free samples of anything. After passing three rooms of items for sale, you’ll get in line to finally get your bib. Make sure you have your ID ready. They will provide safety pins if needed, but no bag (unless you opted for bag check). You will also get a tracker to lace into your shoe (vs a tracker on the back of the bib). There is no finisher shirt, or anything extra provided as a participant. Typically, world major races (at least in the US) have always provided a participant shirt. Here you are expected to purchase a finisher shirt or any other gear on your own. If you choose to volunteer at the expo, they will provide a shirt with TEAM in big letters on the back. Make sure you’re on time for your shift or you may get yelled at. They provide “lunch” which is a sandwich, drink, dessert, and candy. If you’re vegetarian, there likely won’t be a sandwich for you and a bit challenging to find an English speaker. Apparently, you get paid a small amount for volunteering. The expo only had one real photo opp location, which had a long line full of impatient people should someone take more than 5 minutes to take a photo. There was no volunteer there to regulate the line or help take photos. The shopping for official gear becomes a frenzy as people make a mad dash to buy up all the gear they can. I’d go to the expo early to ensure you get the size you want. I didn’t see items for sale online or anywhere else. So if you see something you want, that’s the time to buy it. Pricing is expensive as expected with shirts ranging from 30-40 EUR each and jackets ranging from 80-120 EUR.
The day before the race, I went to the starting area to understand where to report the next day. None of the volunteers or security we asked had any clue as to where the start was. On race day, I stopped by the bag drop because I heard this was the last spot for restrooms. I exited the area and went where letters were posted around the corner. Once again asking volunteers where the start was. An info desk told me the start was 2km away, when in reality it was just a little further from the bag drop area. Overall, it was not organized and seemed no one had an accurate answer to anything. Employees & volunteers need better training to answer basic questions and help runners.
The race route is flat. You won’t find restrooms often and it takes a while before the first water station. Oddly, they give water and tea for hydration and not Gatorade. Some stations were giving peeled banana halves or sliced apples. It would be better if the peels were on these given the number of hands touching the bananas and them sitting out in the open. The same goes for apples. Very late into the run they have one station giving Maurten gels. I didn’t try this, but from what I heard…it was a sugary slime and a friend got diarrhea from it. I’d suggest only using the gels you trained with, and your stomach is used to. They have camera folks out, but you can hardly spot them as they don’t wear any uniform. Often, they were just standing and rarely taking photos of runners. Once you run through Brandenburg Gate you are close to the finish and getting your medal. There are zero backgrounds set up to take a photo with your medal. You’ll get a recovery bag (water, chocolate croissant, chocolate bar, pretzels, and an apple) and then continue further down to get your poncho (if you didn’t do a bag drop). This is a bit unorganized because after getting your recovery bag and poncho, you must backtrack to use the restrooms, showers, or take a photo with some background. The only real background is against the fence with the race title. Finally, as you exit, they give beer. Before exiting be sure to turn in your shoe tracker. Once you’re out, it’s a little challenging to find directions to medal engraving. Luckily, I pre-paid for this so didn’t need to carry cash. Finally found the tent, which is not labeled nor did any volunteer staff really know where it was. Engraving took 15 minutes and must be done that day. After a few days you’ll get an email about photos. It was $35 EUR for all digital photos and another $10 EUR if you want video.
Overall, a nice flat run but could use more organization and runner support. For the price we pay to register and travel to Berlin, it would be nice if they provided a participant shirt, set up photo opp locations for finishers, offered samples at the expo, gave Gatorade vs tea on the race route, had more restrooms available on the run, and gave clear direction on where runners should report to start the race. Tips if you run the race:
- Bring your own gels from home. I wouldn’t risk using what they give you especially if you never trained with it.
- Pre-pay for medal engraving if you choose to have it done. This will save a little time and you won’t need to carry cash.
- The Expo Center has no wifi and most of it is just shopping. They do accept credit card to purchase marathon gear. Bring cash if you choose to eat at the food trucks.
-Participant names were printed at the Hall of Fame wall by Brandenburg Gate. I suggest going there the day before the race to see it, get a feel for the area, and figure out meeting points for any friends/family coming to cheer you on.
-Go to Brandenburg Gate early the day after the race and get photos with your medals when there is less of a crowd.

The event is really well organised. The fair where you get you bib number is huge, with all sorts of sporting goods to sell.
Race day is also well organized and you run with people cheering for the entire course! It seemed like the race passed on the blink of an eye (and I took almost 4 hours to complete it).
My only complaint is about the medal on my year (2019) - they wanted to honor an employee that worked on the race organisation. Although I recognise that he must have been an important figure in the Berlin Marathon history, the runners don't know him and I guessed I preferred to have an athlete engraved on my medal.

Of course, nothing can prevent the rain that fall onto the BMW Berlin Marathon. Especially for those that start in the last pen, in which at least 60 to 80% of the run time is spent running in the rain. Thankfully not super heavy, but still a "pleasure" lol
I came in late on Friday night (Sun was the race). The next day, went to the Expo...wow, besides collecting the race pack, as usual bought a lot of stuffs which seldom see the light of day lol (normally will auction off after a few months???)
Sunday came. Waiting and waiting for the start, as usual went to mobile toilets 2 times before the start. My stomach was a bit ok; had some stomach or guts issue a few days before, but it came back during the race. Thankfully, the hot tea at almost all the aid stations did help a bit...though towards the last few aid stations, the tea was a bit cold???? lol
The sights during running was simply beautiful...the start and of course, the ending under the Gate. I did not felt the route was narrow, perhaps cause I was slow? The support from the crowd was fantastic...the aid stations really good...distance markers accurate, though the Garmin recorded 42.7km at the end???
Another marathon ticked off the bucket list...

The Marathon was well organized and it is nice quick way to see the city by foot. What other event allows you to run through the streets without stopping for traffic lights? The people are nice, Wish I had more time to see the city, 2 days in the city is definitely not enough and I won't be a good or fair judge of the city from just my marathon race but the race was fun, flat and relatively easy :D

I have been a big fan of quality German products. BMW Berlin Marathon made me wonder the quality of German products. Like this event, BMW is poorly produced as well?
I have run 46 different marathons prior running Berlin marathon. I have observed the following in Berlin marathon.
PRO:
1. Berlin is a great city with rich history. All may enjoy their visit there.
2. Even if it rained heavily in 2019 event, many spectators were still along the way to cheer the runners.
3. The volunteers were very helpful.
4. The free bus ride with bib number was very helpful.
5. The warm tea supplied in the water stations were pleasant surprise.
5. We experience the course where holds world record.
CON:
1. The expo has the most chaotic environment comparing to all marathon events. This event has the longest waiting time to get your bib number. I have waited more than one hour in the lines simply to get the number. And, no, your family members are not allowed to be with you while you were waiting on the lines.
2. You have to wear an if-removed-you-cannot-put-it-back wrist band from the time you are identified as a Berlin Marathon runner at the expo to the time you have finished the marathon.
3. No give away T-shirt. The price for their “official” T-shirt is the most expensive one I have seen in all marathon events.
4. Anyone can buy a 2019 Finisher T-shirt before the event started – this is unethical.
5. This course has many narrowing down sections. The narrowed course sections were okay for the crowd size for professional runners, not appropriate for the regular runners. At those sections, you have to slow down if you don’t like to step on others. For this reason, this course is not designed for non-professional runners to run fast.
6. The head shot of their ex-boss on the 2019 medal is not appropriate, or, is it a joke?
7. At the finish area. The announcer told everyone to drop the timing chip to the staff at the exit gate. I was turned away from a gate staff. I had to return the chip to the staff at some certain exit gate. Why not use the widely used timing stripes?
8. The given away ponchos, as an option of not check in bag, are made with single use disposable material. Those ponchos did not provide runners meaningful protection to the cold rain in 2019 event. If you expect the quality of Poncho you have in New York Marathon, you will be totally disappointed.
9. You had warm tea in a couple of aid stations, you may expect some warm tea at the finish? Sorry, there was none.
The size of 46,000+ runners is surely too large to the capability of the organizer, and to the course, as the organizers arranged so.

If your into marathon running then Berlin will probably be on your list. It's one of the six marathon majors and known as the fastest course where the current world record was set. To gain entry to the race can be difficult as the good for age time is one of the toughest at 2.45 for men. Ballot places are available though so worth trying that if your not fast enough. Ballot opens day after thr race so October is the time to apply. It must be one of the most expensive races to enter too at over 100 euros.
Berlin is such a fantastic place to visit anyway but as far as big city marathons go this is ranked as one of the best. The atmosphere I cant explain as over 40k runners take to the roads of Berlin to cover the 26.2 miles of pain whilst taking in most of the cities breathtaking sights. With crowds lining the streets the entire way round there is ho lack of support. The finish line has you passing under the stunning Brandenburg gate before crossing the finishing line to the roar of thousands of supporters. There is no greater feeling than finishing a marathon, it's like a big adventure and the Berlin marathon 2019 didn't disappoint. The heavens opened towards the end of my race and the wind seemed to be getting stronger but it all added to the experience which I'll cherish forever, even nearly getting hyperthermia whilst trying to find where my bag drop was and the changing tents.
The event its self seemed well organised though and I never had a problem. Obviously with 40k runners milling about it was busy, the toilet que was a mile long, people were pooing in the bushes and the changing tent was awkward to say the least. Berlin is nice but felt like I was getting ripped off most of the time and the weather was horrendous which obviously is tough.
All this been said this was a dream race to me, one I put a lot of effort into to training for and one that I was going to enjoy the experience and soak up the atmosphere regardless. I wouldn't change it for the world and would recommend the race to any runner but now I've done it I don't feel a massive urge to return anytime soon, theres far too many other races to experience first.

What a great city to visit. Was running the Berlin Marathon. Stayed in the h4 hotel Berlin in the Alexanderplatz area. Close to the ubahn station to take me down to the starting area. Your bib number covers you on all public transportation on the day. So no need to bring a couple of euros. The weather wasn’t great but didn’t let it ruin my weekend. Would really recommend the hotel because it’s close to a lot of big attractions and shopping malls and local bars. Oktoberfest was in full swing. Great atmosphere with the local Germans. Friendly and very helpful if you need a bit of guidance on where to go for food and drinks. Great trip all round. And a new pb for me in the marathon. Can’t wait to be back again hopefully next year.

Positives.
The route, the sights, the road surface, the number of food and drink stations and the general hype and hullaballoo around the race were all excellent.
Negatives.
-Signposting and simple directions for EXPO (i.e. which U Bahn stop to get off) in pre-literature and on the day were very poor.
-Organisation at EXPO poor, queues and strange queue for wrist band causing the problems, queue not marshalled so usual German fittest first fight for the front
-Portaloos with doors opening out onto the course??? Saw a runner clatter into opening door in first 5km
-big walks with poor signage at beginning and end of race, to find gates to find meeting points....marshals clueless.
-Very German runner thing to run across your line or to barge from behind. Never experienced this as bad before. I was swearing at runners every KM. Rude.
-Nearly missed the medals being dished out from cardboard box. Not like London!
The free non alcoholic lager was bloody awful. Most people leaving it.

This is a fantastic race. It's amazing to be able to run in the same race as the fastest marathoners in the world. Very good organization as well. The only problem I could see were too few toilets at the start.

Grato.

Ameron Hotel ABION Spreebogen Berlin. It was a 15 minute walk. Had good experience staying at the hotel. My suggestion would be to book as early as you can.
Good luck

How early do you need to get to the starting corrals? I do not want to get there at 0730 for a 935 start unless I absolutely have to. Any guidance would be appreciated. I am a 25 minute walk to the starting gates.

Best places to watch the Marathon? Maybe where the crowds have thinned out a bit but runners need supporting more? We are staying in Mitte
