This white, marble monument stands in Plaza Triunfo, outside the Archivio de Indias.
You don't have to go out of your way to see it. Every tourist will find themselves near this plaza at some stage when they wait for entry into the Alcazar or when visiting the Cathedral.
There’s a story attached to the monument. In 1755, Seville was hit by a devastating earthquake of around 8.5 - magnitude. The same earthquake destroyed Lisbon, killing 10,000+ people. Somehow, Seville escaped relatively unscathed. On the day it struck, the Cathedral was full for Sunday mass. Cracks started appearing in the Giralda tower, balustrades and railings fell from the Cathedral roof and stones started to break away. The crowd escaped into the plaza, where incredibly, they continued the mass outside. They were a tough bunch.
Incredibly, little damage was done to the cathedral and only 9 people died across the city. People immediately saw this as a miracle - they had escaped enormous damage and death, thanks to the divine protection of the Virgin Mary. In gratitude, they built this monument with Mary standing at the top of a Baroque column, holding the baby, Jesus to honour and thank her (and possibly as future insurance).

• the south entry to the Cathedral
• the Convent of the Encarnación
• the Almohad Alcazar wall & the main entry into the Alcazar
• Archivo General de Indias
• Immaculate Conception monument

Right in front of the "Archivo General de Indias" and sided by the "Catedral de Sevilla", a baroque white marble column was erected in 1756. At its top, an image of Virgin Mary, here referred to as "Nuestra Señora del Patrocínio" (Our Lady of Patronage, in English), and the Holy Child. The monument commemorates the good fortune of Seville during the terrible earthquake of November 1st, 1755, which devastated many areas of the Iberian Peninsula (known as the "Earthquake of Lisbon"). A mass in honor of "All Saints" was being said at the Cathedral when the earthquake struggled the city. As a miracle, the whole attendance was able to leave the Cathedral, gathering around the square and continuing the mass. No one was injured, despite some damages to the Cathedral itself. As a symbol of faith and gratitude, the "Templete del Triunfo de Nuestra Señora del Patrocínio" was erected, and since then, on every November 1st, a solemn mass is said in honor of "All Saints" at the "Catedral de Sevilla". Amazing history! Horse-drawn carriages await tourists around the column! One last hint: the column can be a good meeting point, as losing a member of our parties is not at all unusual at "Plaza del Triunfo". Enjoy!

Much like the Monument for the Immaculate Conception, this is another great piece of public, religious art that is in the middle of the convergence of Cathedral, Alcazar and Archives. Another thing made perfect for pictures.
