‪The statue itself is not particularly striking and we might easily have walked past it but its position makes it catch your eye. It stands near the exit to Retiro Park, facing the Prado. The avenue of trees and pathways are designed to lead the eye towards the sculpture and then on to the Prado. The monument commemorates the playwright, Jacinto Benavente (1866 – 1954). He is represented by the figure of a woman in classical robes, standing on a tall narrow pedestal and holding a Greek drama mask aloft. This is just a symbolic figure and it doesn't help much with telling us what Benavente looked like in real life. For that, you have to look at the small bronze relief lower down on the pedestal. Other than the relief, his name and dates, there is no more information about him on the work which prompted us to look up a little more about him. He was nothing if not prolific, writing over 170 plays and winning the 1922 Nobel Prize for Literature. He is recognised as Spain’s most prominent 20th century writer. Most of his plays are comedies and satires, sometimes set in Madrid and sometimes in Moraleda, an imaginary provincial town. He often wrote about social morals at the turn of the century and satirised superficial and shallow behaviour especially amongst the rich and powerful. He was critical of decadent behaviour and was impatient with petty values such as concern for appearances, fashion and etiquette because they turned people’s heads and made them lose sight of higher human values and ideals. His masterpiece is Los Intereses Creados  (The Bonds of Interest). It sounded interesting. Two con artists, Crispin and Leandro, come across a town full of corrupt politicans and greedy merchants. Knowing that the townspeople’s greed will make them quick to take the bait, the pair hatch a plot to con the town by dangling the promise of getting rich quickly in front of them. Benavente satirises corruption and greed in a money- driven world. He might have written it over 100 years ago but it doesn't sound as if it’s lost any relevance today. The nearby Plaza de Jacinto Benventa is also named after him and interestingly, Benavente’s father, Dr Mariano Benavente, also has a statue in the park. I wonder if this father/son statue thing is a first? We didn't see the statue but apparently it is a marble bust, erected in recognition of his exceptional work in the care and health of children in the 1800s.‬

‪This striking monument is located in the Parterre Garden of Retiro near Puerta de Felipe IV.

Jacinto Benavente was a dramatist who won a Nobel prize in 1922. The big statue depicts a woman holding a theater mask. On the basis lies Benavente's face.‬

‪From the monument itself, you get an idea of the person's identity. A really nice place to honer such a well known Spanish writer.‬

‪This monument stands in tribute to Jacinto Benavente, considered to be the foremost Spanish writer of the 20th century and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922.

The monument features a bronze classical sculpture featuring a woman (presumably an actress), hold a theatre mask as if about to place it onto her face. The sculpture stands atop a plinth, which a rectangular stone block bearing the name of Jacinto Benavente and a bronze relief sculpture of the writer.

A beautiful classical statue and all the more so for it's easy to understand reference to a Nobel winning writer.‬
