The very name "Terra murata" speaks for itself to those who know how to understand it. In fact, "Terra" in ancient Italian doesn't mean only "earth"; but, as in this case, also a village, a settlement. Therefore "walled settlement": the first and safest inhabited place on the island, at least from the early Middle Ages onwards, given its elevation over the surrounding area (elevation that allows gorgeous views).
Given this, it's natural that within the perimeter of the walls there were both dwelings, places of worship (the venerated abbey church of San Michele Arcangelo), and the seat of the lord of the island. Which since 1529 and for two centuries belongs to the d'Avalos family; from which the homonymous palace of the seventeenth century here located takes its name.
The palace currently appears very deteriorated, because since 1830 until 1860 (Kingdom of Naples, Bourbon dynasty), then until the 1980s (Italian State), it was the seat of a prison; obviously distorting the original architecture.
There is the possibility of making visits to the former prison (in limited parts of it), but we haven't practiced it: the guided tour of "Terra Murata" which we have used concerned only the exteriors.
However, having subsequently wanted to delve into the events of the prison, I found more information.
For example, I have ascertained that, after careful archival research, a terrible massacre of prisoners has been reconstructed, motivated by an "attempt to escape", which took place in this prison in 1848, and of which memory was almost lost: more of 140 Sicilian prisoners, imprisoned for having participated in the revolts for the independence of the island and little time before transferred fhere rom the Messina prison, almost unarmed, were massacred between 24 and 27 June by prison guards together with units of the Bourbon army (see the web page "archivissima.it", sadly only in Italian).
"Terra murata" therefore, over the course of time, has been the scene of memorable, sometimes terrible, events.

Unfortunately the terra mural offers rooms with sea view which are actually dark , very noisy rooms where you get get a view on the sea only from the bathroom.
The is an accessible balcony which is not decorated or have any possibilities to actually use it.

It is a small and not very interesting village at the top of the hill around the Abazzia San Michele, a standard baroque church. Beautiful view of port of Corricelli.

When you come to Procida you must do a tour of Terra Muta, either an organised tour or by yourselves. We did it on our own, caught the C2 bus, had a lovely lunch with magnificent views.

Great view from the highest point on the island. Plus there is a bar with seating all along the top so you can enjoy a beverage while relaxing.

A lovely spot to amble about and admire the antiquated part of the island. Impressively steep and narrow streets (little feet might tire, especially in the heat). The old prison and chapel at the top of the town are worth a peek and you'll find some of the best views around. Meander down into the fishing port when you're done and enjoy a nice harbour side beer or meal. Theres no cars or traffic at the bottom which is great, but you'll have to walk back out when you're done!

There are some great views up on the hill and the old houses have a difference about them. This is the location of the old 11th century Abbazia di San Michele which is worth a visit as well. It is a walk up to the area near the old caste but worth it.

We are berthed in the marina di Sancio Catholico. Charming and homey. Many small cafes and restaurants nearby.

We hiked up to this area just to see what was located in the area and found a museum, two churches, the old prison and some wonderfully colored buildings. Worth a visit and the views are sublime.

We took a taxi to the top of the island and watched the bus in front of us squeeze through the narrow streets. Enjoyed the beautiful views and this historic site. We walked back, stopping at the village of Coricella to have a nice lunch on the waterfront. Another short walk back to the marina. Fun day on the cutest island!

Our archaeological group would like to ferry over and get insider tours to the sites such as abbey, palace, prison and Museum. A Saturday in April. Could you suggest a guide and itinerary for 15-25 people?
