‪Our expectations were sky high for this place and they were dashed. This was much smaller than we thought it would be and fairly pedestrian, with only one room truly standing out. Was it terrible? No, but definitely not a must see, particularly as it is out of the way and there may be other places more worthy of your precious time in Genoa. Hands down, one of the biggest disappointments of my travel career.‬

‪Prior to visiting, the only thing I knew about the name Andrea Doria was that of the ill-fated ocean liner bearing its moniker. During my visit here I learned a bit about this uber successful sea captain.
The exterior of the house is sprawling and occupies a prime waterfront location (although today, encroaching buildings and an elevated roadway do detract somewhat). The interior features two wings - his and hers. Unlike other palazzos in Genoa, there is virtually no furniture in the rooms - only art (tapestries, paintings, sculptures). Informative cards detailing the art and decor are available in several languages in each room. While visiting, it was interesting to watch one of the rooms being painstakingly restored by craftspeople in scaffolding scraping, painting, etc. the frescoes on the ceiling.
While I found the house impressive, I did notice some areas of neglect both inside and out which surprised me. Perhaps the restoration in progress is just the beginning of a larger project.
One issue...with a 9 euro entrance fee, I was surprised to learn that if I chose to take photos inside I would have to pay another 4 euros. ‬

‪This Palacve is peculiar in Genoa, because it is not relly among other buildings, it is just in front of the sea, along the harbour. Besides the nice rooms and arts, the garden is quite and surprising.‬

‪Do not forget this one. It is right behind the station and was the home of Admiral Andrea Doria,. It is still owned by the Doria Pamphily family and in my opinion was one of the best. They do charge you E4 to take photos and a first we was not sure it was worth it. However, we had to go back and pay as lots of really interesting rooms. A lot of the decoration was original and id does give you a real insight into how the occupants lived. The loggia deli is facing the garden and it contains a fresco of what first appears to be Roman Soldiers, but we were told that these were all the faces of the family's important men. As we visited you could see that there were working on resorting the garden, and we did see two big fountains (one Fontana del tritone by Montorsoli (a pupil of Michelangelo) both from the 16th century.I understand that some of the land was lost when the station was enlarged and the dock fro liners was created out of their own private quay.‬

‪We visited because it was Monday and all the other museums in the city were closed. but being privately owned, this one was open. It takes some finding as it’s not near the other historical palaces in the city but if you’re in the area it’s good to know that a visit to the gardens (where’s there’s an impressive fountain) and exterior is free. As well as the normal entry fee, there’s an optional photo tax (4€ I think) and the private rooms of the princess can only be seen on a limited number of guided tours for which there is also an additional charge. There are no explanations in the rooms, but we were given a guide book in English describing each of the rooms and its contents though it’s worth noting that you are meant to provide some form of ID to leave as a deposit and credit cards are not acceptable. The textiles and tapestries were very good and so were the ornate ceilings but the best item for me was one of a pair of marble inlay tables with birds eating grapes etc around its edge. That’s at the very far end of the rooms you can visit next to the chapel entrance, Although it’s now surrounded by the city, the elevated road and views to the docks, with a bit on imagination you can visualise how good its location must have been with just the hills behind and the views down to the coast beyond the gardens at the front.‬

‪The Villa has opulent rooms, with many valuable decorations and massive tapestries. The joint ticket with the Royal Palace (9€) is quite good value for money, as otherwise the entrance just for the Villa is also 9€. There is a photo tax of 4€, and some of the rooms (the private rooms of the princess) are only accessible by guided tour (6€), which I haven't seen. When I have visited it, there were only three other people in the museum, so it's a rather quiet place. There are no explanations in the rooms, but I was given a book describing each of the rooms and its contents.‬

‪The inside is stunning with many of the rooms appointed with paintings from The Genovese Baroque artists. One room had 3 Poilas. But the grounds are what really catches the eye. Beautiful fountains and greenery. I bet in the spring it's truly spectacular. The canopy appears to be draped in wisteria which blooms in the spring. I also saw a pair of turtle doves and a pea hen roaming the grounds‬

‪This is somehow hidden in plain sight, as the last centuries brought a lot of constructions around, including cutting off sea access. The gardens and exterior cam be visited for free. The interior is 9 EUR and an extra opțional photo tax. The residence is extremely beautiful, with stunning decorations, most noticeable for us was the gallery. ‬

‪If you are visiting the Royal Palace you can buy a joint ticket which in effect allows you to visit Villa del Principe at half price, otherwise the charge is the same as visiting the Royal Palace and as such is extremely poor value for money. There is no way in which Villa del Principle can compare to the Royal Palace, yet if bought separately the cost of the ticket is the same for both venues. The Villa garden is quite nice, but the interior is rather disappointing. Moreover, as others have said, it is very difficult to find the Villa with no clear signage at the entrance to the building. Moreover, their PR is very poor. We arrived at 3.30 pm, having spent ten minutes or more trying to find the entrance, to be greeted with a notice indicating that last entry was at 3.30 pm. By the time we got to the ticket office it was 3.35 pm and only grudgingly did they allow us to visit the interior, which was set out for a private reception, but they made it clear we must finish our visit by 4.30 pm. In fact you can see everything in 30 minutes tops, and none of the rooms have information boards, though we were offered a booklet which evidently had to be returned at the end of the visit. Everywhere else we visited in Liguria allowed you to take photos for free provided you did not use flash. However, towards the end of our visit we were told rather brusquely that photography was not allowed. Had we known better we would have definitely skipped this place.‬
