At one time, the interior of Santa Maria del Carmine probably matched the beauty of its Brancacci Chapel (accessed by a separate, ticketed entrance). However, the church as a whole seems to be suffering from decades (maybe centuries) of inadequate maintenance. I was there for mass one recent Saturday evening and was rather saddened by the general state of the place, which looked like it could do with a thorough cleaning and some restoration work. If you're in the area to see the Brancacci Chapel and like old churches, you may wish to explore the rest of the church, but considering how many beautiful churches there are in Italy, this is one that is skippable. (Please note, this review is of the whole church of Santa Maria del Carmine, not the Brancacci Chapel, which is well worth the time for art enthusiasts or those interested in Christian tradition, history, and/or churches).

This church is situated in southern Florence about 15 mins across the bridge from the city centre. The square is quiet, rustic but not particularly pretty or interesting The area is residential but unlike other areas in Tuscany it does not feel quaint but run down. Undoubtably the church has beautiful frescoes but the joy of finding a small church to discover as you can do in small towns like Volterra is tarnished with a payment of 8€ for each church As you wander Florence one wonders whether the authorities really welcomes tourists

It cost us 6 euro per person to enter the Santa Maria del Carmine. We thought we would have access to the entire complex but all we were allowed into was the Cappella Brancacci, and the Cenacolo. The frescoes seemed great, but we could only look at them from far because there was a guide with an entire group of people taking up the whole area, so we could not get close enough to really appreciate them. We then caught the end of the video presentation in the Cenacolo room and that was it! So considering that there are a lot of worthwhile places you can visit in Florence for free or for a small fee, this just felt like a rip-off.

The Brancacci Chapel is the reason most people come to the church, and it must be accessed from a door to the right of the facade. The church itself is not without interest. The baroque illusionistic ceiling is a wonder as are the wonderful side chapels. You can peek into the Brancacci from the church itself, but you really cannot see the frescoes well unless you book a ticket at the ticket booth for a separate entrance into the chapel. If you are going to the chapel itself, you would do well to catch the rest of the church.

Santa Maria del Carmine is one of the most elegant baroque churces of the city. However its important lies in one of the chapels (Brancacci) decorated with marvellous frescoes by Masolino, Masaccio and Lippi.
Absolutely recommended. Florence visit without this place is incomplete.

This was the first church we visited on our first day - so impressed. It’s a small church and destroyed in a fire, so not much inside, but what has been restored is beautiful.
It’s very discreet on the outside, you will miss it if you’re not careful.

The church was built in the 13th century as a part of still existing Carmelite convent. It was enlarged and than renovated in the following centuries first in the Baroque style and later in the Rococo style, after the damage by fire in the 18th century. Fortunately, its main treasures survived the fire, mainly the Brancacci Chapel, which is a home of famous frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino.

This church was rebuilt after a fire that saved the mosT important frescoes. It was rebuilt in the Baroque style but pales in comparison to others in the area. I thought the staff was not to welcoming.

They closed early and were very rude. They really do not seem to want or appreciate visitors. Given the circumstances, I have no clue how the frescos were.

Founded in 1268 and completed only in 1475, Santa Maria del Carmine was destroyed by fire in 1771, and rebuilt in The Baroque style. Fortunately The Brancacci Chapel was spared.

These are the most important frescoes in Florence. They were painted by Masolino and Masaccio, the latter of which revolutionized renaissance art.
A thirty minute visit is enough and the frescoes will blow you away.
