Another great sculpture which you can enjoy and even get photo standing next to it. In this area are several note worthy and photogenic sculptures from Neptune fontain, Copy of David and Perseus.

Ratto della Sabina exhibited in Loggia dei Lanzi is probably the most significant work of the Flemish sculptor living in Italy, and mostly in Florence. The beautifully carved snow-white marble statue features three figures. A handsome robber is carrying the young Sabin girl who is getting kidnapped, and an elderly half-lying man who might be her father. On a closer look, maybe it's not so terrible to get into the arms of such a good looking, young kidnapper. However, the girl is still struggling, the old man is more than terrified, and the young warrior is enjoying the seductive booty. The bronze relief on the base of the statue shows further scenes from the event.
There are always many admirers of the statue, and rightly so because it is an outstanding work of Giambologna.

This striking statue by Giambologna features stunning attention to detail and is an essential part of the Loggia, which is surely one of Florence's most impressive attractions.

Another statue by Giambologna, who made the one for the Fountain of Neptune, this one depicts the Rape of the Sabine Women. It is planned that it might be substituted by a copy, due to the fact that atmospheric agents are degrading the original quickly.

Two versions of this famous sculpture can be seen in two different places: in the Loggia dei Lanzi and in the Accademia Gallery. The first is obviously the more accessible one. There is a special Giambologna room located at the very entrance of the Accademia where the sculpture is displayed.
Decide for yourself where you think you like it better.

This statue is 4.10 metres tall and was made by Giambologna. It's one of many artistic impressions of the abduction of Sabine women in Roman mythology. There are claims the word rape wasn't meant in the way we use it now. It was more like an abduction on a large scale.
The statue is made out of marble and was restored in 2001.

In original Latin, "raptio" means a kidnapping or a mass abduction. This use of the term rape has a different connotation than the Latin root. It is a beautiful piece of sculpture, showing a father on the ground, unable to stop the young man from carrying off his daughter. The execution of this sculpture is filled with energy.
By way of background, the Sabine tribe refused to intermingle with the Romans who they saw as competitors on many fronts. They denied the pleas to allow their daughters to marry. Apparently, women did not have a say-so in this matter.
Fast-forwarding a bit, the women were taken forcefully from their homes and made new homes with the Romans. Romulus is supposed to have granted them civil and property rights if they would consent to the unions.
These wives and mothers were also sisters and daughters; they did intercede in a battle between the Sabines and the Romans. Their argument was that they didn't want the loss of their children's fathers or grandfathers and, if their husbands were killed in the battle, what would become of them? Very often, it was a life of prostitution and begging, just to stay alive.
It worked. There was peace in the valley one again. Hopefully the tension dissipated. Hearing the story from our guide made this event come alive.

This sculpture, by Giambologna, is located within the Loggia Dei Lanzi. On the base is a bas-relief plaque that depicts different positions for the 3 people in the statue. The statue shows a young man holding a young woman above him, while standing over an old man. This is the original marble statue; the one located within the Accademia is the original model for this sculpture.

There are many art pieces here and the Ratto della Sabina is one unique piece. I couldn’t believe when the guide said this was the original. If you are into sculpture art, you’ll like this one.

Giambologna work is the original in the Loggia. The copy is in the Accademia, so it i sinteresting that this extraordinary work is on open space. Beautiful statue.
