‪Grand city gate‬
יולי 2020
‪Large, ornate 14th Century city gate at the Northern end of the historic part of Dordrecht city centre. The gate has an intricate decorative design which commemorates various events associated with the city. The location, at the point where three rivers converge, is also very pleasant and, with a few cafe terraces close by, well worth spending a bit of time at.‬

‪Reaching this gate means that you have passed some pretty streets already. From here you will have a nice view over the water. Walk from here to the Grote Kerk and you will see some nice places!‬

‪A historic gate in Dordrecht's old town.‬
חברים • מאי 2019
‪The "Groothoofdspoort" is a former city gate in Dordrecht that is located at the point where three rivers meet; the Merwede, the Oude Maas, and the Noord. The building was designed in the 14th century and was originally built with gothic details. The facades were built in 1618 with the tower being added in 1692. The relief above the doorway facing the river was designed by Gillis Huppe in 1618 and shows the Dordrecht maiden sitting in the "Garden of Holland", holding a palm branch in her left hand and the city shield in her right hand, based on an earlier design by the Dordrecht painter Gerrit Gerritsz Cuyp. She is surrounded by the shields of the 16 cities who rebelled during the 80 years war. This really is a lovely piece of Dutch history and is well worth a look... It will only take 5 minutes of your time. Nearby is a great Dutch Restaurant called 'Jongepier' (See my other review for this).‬

‪Once most central gate in the Netherlands‬
לבד • יוני 2018
‪Dordrecht is located at a strategic junction of three rivers in the borderland between Holland and Brabant. The Earls of Holland and Dukes of Brabant were bitter rivals in the 13th and 14th century low lands. Once the city got the priviledge of imposing tax on all transportation on the three rivers in 1299, its significance increased dramatically. Ships would dock at the groot hoofd (great quay). Merchants and goods would enter the city through the gate (Groothoofdspoort).

The original structure dates from 1450 but is hardly visible as a newer early 17th century gate was constructed covering it. The riverside facade of the gate is the most interesting. The city virgin is depicted sitting in a fenced garden symbolizing her unmarried status, but also the invincibility of the city. It is unknown if virgins within the city walls were really safe.‬

‪Nice old building‬
לבד • נוב׳ 2017
‪I saw this building on accident. I took the water taxi from the place with all the windmills. Was looking and taking pictures as the boat pulled near to town, and saw this cool unique building. I would have walked near it and taken closer pics but didn't want to miss the train.‬

‪This is an absolutely gorgeous gate at the edge of the historical district. There are several little cafes/restaurants in close proximity with great views over the water and of the gate!‬

‪This 'big head gate' (or Groothoofdspoort) has a new tower room on it. The gate can be used to walk from the inner city to the water front.‬

‪Old city gate, the nicest point is the views over the water where two canals merge into the river Oude Maas. You cannot miss it following the well sign posted city trail.‬
