‪Beautiful Art Nouveau Building‬
ספט׳ 2019
‪Maison Saint Cyr is a house in the Quartier des Squares district of Brussels, and designed by Gustave Strauven in the Art Nouveau style. The house is private, so I could only admire it from the outside.

The facade is narrow as is common in Belgium and theNetherlands. It's richly decorated with balconies of wrought ironwork. Each balcony has a balustrade that is unusual in being unique. Each forms a beautiful set of lines, curves and geometric figures, reminiscent of an interlacing of plants and tree branches. The decorative elements of the windows are also distinctly Art Nouveau and would not be out of place in Catalan Mordernism.

The building is off the main tourist circuit in Brussels, but worth it if you have time.‬

‪Swirling curving Art Nouveau‬
חברים • יוני 2019
‪Critics have mixed views about this exuberant example of Art Nouveau in Brussels, the Saint-Cyr House with its curving swirling ironwork on a house only 4m wide. Some say it is one of the best examples in Brussels; others say it is confused and ill-proportioned. You have to remember however that the architect was only 21 years old!

The house, which has recently been restored, was built between 1900 and 1903 as the home of artist and decorator Léonard de Saint-Cyr. It was designed by Brussels architect Gustave Strauwen, who was a student of the legendary Victor Horta, who was responsible for many Art Nouveau buildings in Brussels.

There are other architecturally-interesting houses nearby one by Victor Horta himself, currently under refurbishment, the Van Eetvelde Townhouse dating from 1895 in the street named after Lord Palmerston who lived nearby. This is much more subdued, but while you are here, do explore the architecture of the area.

‪Under renovation‬

‪Awkward facade, not very successful in terms of sheer beauty. Less is often more. Under renovation till June 2018. Not clear if the building will be open for guided visits. ‬

‪We're all going to hell...‬
לבד • ספט׳ 2016
‪Passed this building just at the weekend - deliberately went out of my way to visit it. It's beginning to look very sad and neglected: grills over the windows, glass smashed, disgusting steel anti-vandal door. Stand back (way back!) and it's still beautiful but why is this not being looked after by some cultural heritage organisation - where's all those European Tax Euros?
I think civilization has peaked and we're on the downward slope...see it now before it's too late.‬

‪ART NOUVEAU HOUSE‬
לבד • יולי 2015
‪I was staying in a hotel near the Square ambiorix and one afternoon I went for a stroll towards the gardens and street area around the hotel and found this lovely Art Nouveau building along the side of the park.
It is a bit out of the city in the upper town but if you are in the area it's worth a look around there are some nice buildings and parks there.
(my nearest metro stop was Schuman or Maelbeek and a selection of buses stop near it also).‬

‪Mandatory Stop on Art Nouveau Tour. Tourist Center Map Helps!‬
זוגות • מאי 2015
‪Maison Saint Cyr, designed by Gustave Strauven in 1900, boasts perhaps the most extravagant art nouveau facade in Brussels. Set on a beautiful square, Maison Saint Cyr is rewarding---even though you can only view it from the outside. Several other notable art nouveau buildings are nearby, incluing Hotel van Eetvelde, by Victor Horta. The beautiful Square Marie-Louise (and park) is close as well.

TIP: If you are a serious art nouveau fan, get a "Brussels Art Nouveau" map at the tourist center (Place Royale). It costs 5 euros and provides 5 walking tour itineraries. Maison Saint Cyr is featured in Itinerary 3. Plus the map includes info about the architects and decorative techniques. Well worth the investment. It helped us find lots of beautiful (free!) sights on Monday, when museums are closed.‬

‪Wonderful house‬

‪If you're in the area around all the EU buildings it's worth taking a detour to Square Ambiorix to see this wonderful Art Nouveau dwelling. You can't go inside, but the exterior is quite enough!‬

‪Favourite art nouveau house‬

‪This wonderful small house on the Square Amborix is worth wandering past as you enjoy the square - part of the art nouveau walk. It is my favourite art nouveau building because of its ornate exterior, and small size. It was recently for sale.‬
