‪Cute little church‬
ספט׳ 2020
‪Small little church on corner of road, with an excellent feel inside. Worth a visit and nice gardens outside. Good location near Venizelos statue and popular square area and market.‬

‪11th century Byzantine Church of the Virgin of the Copper-smiths‬
יוני 2019
‪The Church of Panagia Chalkeon is an 11th-century Byzantine church located at Dikastirion Square, north of the intersection of Via Egnatia and Aristotelous Avenue. Its name translates as "the Virgin of the Copper-smiths", from its location in an area traditionally occupied by the city's copper smiths. The church was built in 1028 in a classic "cross-in-square-form" typical of Macedonian-period architecture, with four columns and three domes (one central and two over the narthex). The entire building is built of bricks, which gave it the popular nickname "Red Church". The church is in a lovely fenced garden; arches and setbacks gives the exterior a "sculpted" appearance. The interior of the church is divided into three sections: The narthex, the naos (the central square of a ‘cross-in-square’ plan), and the sanctuary. Column capitals have reliefs of laurel leaves and knot patterns which contain crosses and rosettes in them. The lintel of the royal door leading from the narthex into the naos is decorated with a twisting band design, forming squares and circles in relief. The walls were originally covered with paintings at the time the church was built (most lost), but the few remnants are in good condition. A few 14th century paintings appear on the west wall. The church is open daily, free of charge. A donation is gratefully appreciated.‬

‪Lovely Byzantine church‬
אוג׳ 2019
‪There are lots of churches in Thessaloniki, including some lovely Byzantine churches. The church of Panagia Chalkeon is one of them. It dates from the 11th century. Thessaloniki is a good town to do a walking tour and this church should be included on your route. We walked all round Thessaloniki from the port, where we arrived on a cruise ship.‬

‪Can you Spare a Copper... Smith !!‬
זוגות • יוני 2019
‪This church dates back to the early 11th century and is simply beautiful. Its name means "The Church of the Virgin of the Coppersmiths" because the area was once the centre for the city's coppersmith artisans and it was those businesses that paid for the building of the church. It is thought that the church was built on the site of where an ancient Greek temple once stood. The minute you enter into the lobby area you are hit by the very strong atmosphere of the space, which was added to, on the day we visited, by a powerful aroma of incense. The main body of the church is very small but the walls are just packed with gorgeous frescoes and iconography. The dome seems like a bright bowl, way above your head due to its height and the way it's lit by natural light from small windows versus the small and very dark floor area. It is a wonderfully peaceful place to spend time and reflect. Additionally, the gardens outside add a lovely feeling of freshness to the area.‬

‪An other byzantine jewellery of our city!‬
חברים • אפר׳ 2019
‪Don't miss the byzantine masterpieces of Thessaloniki! Not even the smallest ones! And the church of Panagia Chalkeon (=Virgin Mary of the blacksmiths) couldn't be an exception! It was built in 1028. Don't forget to have a look at the beautiful fresco of the Last Judgement on the narthex's upper wall!‬

‪I noticed this church on my first day in the city while walking from my hotel to the Aristotelous Square. There is adequate signage where the entrance is located. I visited the church and said my prayers. Admired the beauty of its frescoes and paintings. ‬

‪Situated some meters below street level is this beautiful 11th century little church. Smell the incense when you enter. Four beautiful icons of the evangelists. The church is surrounded by a nice garden. ‬

‪Beautiful UNESCO-listed Byzantine Church‬

‪This small Byzantine era church is UNESCO listed and well worth a visit whilst in Thessaloniki. A pretty little garden, well preserved buildings, and some attractive frescoes to be seen inside. Located in the city centre so very easy to visit.‬

‪Church and Gardens ‬

‪Attractive Byzantine church located in central Thessaloniki. Interior is small and ornate. Take the time to admire some of the frescoes as well as the exceptional stonework. Tropical-like, well manicured gardens lie adjacent to the church. ‬
