Really enjoyed the various food samples & picking apples to make juice. Both unexpected & enjoyable. The buildings were so interesting. We received a 50% discount with our HC Anderson tickets.

Small and cosy even on a rainy day - if you bring the right clothes of course.
The restaurant is rather small so on busy days it will probably be full very easily.
However the posters regarding sustainablity is mostly a wish from management. I didn't really get the vibe in the houses even do you could braid with some yarn which could have been strips of old fabric.
The entrance hall was absolutely hideous and bears no resemblance the timber framed buildings in the museum. How the architects came up with the design is a mystery! The shop was also somewhat expensive though well equipped.
Overall I like the old houses and the people in historical clothing and the entire atmosphere of the place, but i rather dislike the entrance hall, the seemingly artificial preoccupation of sustainability.

We spent almost a full day at Funen Village. The site isn't so big as to be totally overwhelming, but has enough that you need at least 2 - 3 hours to see it all. There is an introductory film, horse cart rides for a small fee, farm animals, and volunteers offering demos and conversation. We appreciated the artifacts that furnish the houses and buildings and the open access. We could get a real sense of living and working in the Denmark of the past.
We used the Aafort River Cruise boat for transportation from central Odense. Cruise was about 30 minutes to Fruens Bøge, the closest stop to Funen Village. From there, it was a very pleasant stroll through a beautiful woods. The pathway is well marked.
Our only disappointment was in the cafe. The premise was inviting as was the menu. However, we were totally ignored by the staff. Eventually, we left. This was the only rude treatment we received in our week long visit to Denmark and it did stand out. Perhaps next time, rather than waiting and asking politely for help, we should demand service like "ugly Americans". I don't know what was expected of us. I had to make a conscious decision to not let this experience ruin the rest of Funen Village visit.

What a great place: all the houses were open and staff was walking around to ask questions.
A lot of information on plants and animals.

If you have been to Den Gamble By in Aarhus, this museum may underwhelm you. It is much smaller but you probably still need 2 hrs to see everything properly.
I arrived about 1 hr 40 mins before closing time because I arrived back early from a day trip to Egeskov Castle which was closed so I thought I'd do something else and come back to Odense earlier. Before buying the ticket, I asked the staff selling the tickets how much time would I need to see everything. She misled me and said 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. I think it was because she wanted me to just buy the ticket and didn't care about my experience.
There is a stark contrast between this museum and the one in Aarhus. Even the quality of the staff is remarkably different. The staff here were not that helpful and a lot colder than in Den Gamble By.
The village buildings in the Funen Village are only from the 19th century. It would be useful and helpful to the tourists if the numbers for each building made some logical sense in terms of the path to follow, or paint footsteps on the floor, like they have in Odense for the Hans Christian Anderson trail.
What really annoyed me was what happened at around 4.40pm. 20 mins before closing time. I had only 3 buildings left to see and the staff had started to close the buildings at 4.30pm. This is totally unfair when they say they close at 5pm.
Put this into context. You are charging us 125DKK, just as much as Den Gamle By and they are three times as large and the service and experience is so much better. The least you can do is be fair and keep all the buildings open till 5pm. Because they started shutting the buildings at 5pm, I could not see everything. I had enough time before 5pm to see the other buildings had I not been asked to start to prepare to leave. It left a bad taste in my mouth and I feel ripped off.

We were spending a week in a summer house in the town of Bogense. We had the mobility of a car and so were enjoying the freedom of being able to explore this most delightful island. We enjoyed visiting such sights as Flyvsandet Hundskov, a beautiful beach area on the north coast. There are some nice hikes in this area and there is also a nice campground, if you have chosen to bring your camper. There are some lovely churches here that you should stop in and see, Otterrup Kirke, Krogsbolle Kirke, to name a "few".
A visit to Odense is of course, at the top of places to visit. My cousin's daughter and grandson live in Odense. Her son is an aspiring actor and has participated in the H.C. Andersen Festspillene outdoor productions for a number of years now. This year, the production was Tommelise and Josva was in the role of one of the bees. This is more of role than it sounds! This takes place every summer in the FriluftsTeatret (open air theatre) in Den Fynske Landsby in Odense. A more fitting place there cannot be, to host this event in honour of the revered native son of Odense. I must say, attending this event was one the highlights of our trip to Denmark. Den Fynske Landsby is an open air museum located in Fruens Boge and was founded in 1942. It features 25 Funish building that mostly date from the 18th and 19th centuries, Tommerup Parsonage dates from 1692. There is in addition, also ornamental gardens that feature Funen fruit tree varieties that date from the past. There are also farm livestock that had their origin in Denmark and they include animals such as Danish red cattle, Danish landrace goats and sheep, as well Danish landrace pigs and geese. It is truly a place that is giving knowledge of the past as well as helping in preserving the old races of livestock.
We had enjoyed the earlier part of this day being escorted around Odense by Josva and his mother. We visited the house where H.C. grew up and where there is now a new museum commemorating his life. And afterwards in Eventyrhaven, we enjoyed a portrayal of H.C. Andersen's fairy tales put on by another group of actors. All in all, a fun experience.
One place you should visit in Odense, as well, is the Odense Domkirke, Sankt Knuds Kirke. King Knud and his brother Benedict are buried in the crypt.
This was our last full day in Fyn before we headed to Copenhagen for the last leg of our journey. Our last stop in Fyn was Kerteminde, a delightfully pretty harbour town in eastern Fyn.
We are returning this summer to spend two weeks in Bogense. Looking forward to it is an understatement.

This open air museum starts with an interesting, but somewhat long introductory film in the main building. Outside is an open air museum with buildings from around Fyn in the time of Hans Christian Andersen. Farms, mills, hospital, prison, parsonage, gardens. All beautifully rebuilt/restored/relocated, beautifully set out around a meandering path. A small restaurant, but also several places indoor and out where you are welcome to eat your own packed lunch. There are people in costume wandering around but you can engage with them or ignore them according to your want. Another lovely little feature behind one of the little eating houses between the prison and the school is a little playround with wood carved animals that are so life-like and pleasing, they are really enchanting. Don't miss the little clambering track over the log bridge for adventurous children. Overall a lovely day out for families and plenty to do for the children whose entrance by the way is free.

This is a great place to visit with friends, family and kids of all ages. They have activities for kids to do and the open grounds and gardens are great as well. You can go inside the old houses and see how they used to live in the old times. You can spend hours walking, exploring and would highly recommend watching HC Andersen's theatrical performance which runs in the summer and winter, worth your time and money.

What’s the public transport like to reach Funen from Odense we’re there for the day
Museum Odense

Dear Lynne,
You have a few options! Bus no. 110 and 111 (direction Nr. Broby) stop outside the Funen Village. You can take these from the central station.
Or you can take the train to Fruens Bøge Station. From there, you have about a 15-minute walk to the Funen Village.
You can even get here by boat: Odense Aafart (river boats) sail from Munke Mose in Central Odense to the river boat terminal at Fruens Bøge, It takes about 20 minutes to walk through beautiful natural surroundings to the Funen Village.
Read more about it on our webpage (denfynskelandsby.dk)
