We ran into a guy who said that he had seen so many Italian churches that he doubted if he could continue. But then he went on to say that this one was one that we could not miss. So we climbed a lot of steps and visited the big church on the hill and it was splendid, partially because of the great views of the sea and the rocks below.

This is a small town and there are not many sites, but this is one that you must do as the paintings on the ceiling are magnificent and unusual. Some other rich decorations as well. Up on top of the hill at the castle.

The cathedral sits atop the (nearly) highest point on Lipari and was the first thing we saw as Seaborn Quest made its approach by way of the sea. The bell tower is the most prominent structure in this old walled citadel.
When visiting with our guide, we came to learn that this is a circa 1600's structure and, although temples or buildings would have stood here since the ancient Greek ages, the Arabs (first) and then the Ottomans destroyed them completely. This present iteration was safely erected when the threat of invasion was minimal.
The interior is quite beautiful: pure white columns reach up to a vaulted (barrel) ceiling painted with biblical scenes (the one with the golden calf was very interesting). Elegant crystal chandeliers line the aisles and the pulpit ceiling is a pattern of blue and pale gold/yellow which is accented by the color added at the top of the columns.
Stained glass windows would also look to be originals, given their subject matter and execution. This is truly a beauty but, for us, the story on the doors was most interesting as it reflects what happened in the 1590's and also shows the citadel as it would have looked then.
The story is, Lipari was hit very hard by famine after severe weather conditions in the 1590's devastated their crops. The excessive rain and extreme cold was unrelenting and their very poor crop yield suffered wheat rust. But, a miracle (attributed to their patron saint, Bartholomew) arrived at their shore. A ship loaded with grain delivered them from starvation.
Saint Bartholomew and angels, with sacks of grain aboard, are depicted in the doors. The inscription in Latin loosely translated reads: God and S. Bartholomew relieved the famine of the city with a miraculous miracle and another inscription reads (more or less): What gift is that which thou hast applied, oh glorious apostle.
There is a huge flight of stairs leading from in front of the church going down to the lower city. This is an imposing and important structure with a story 600 years old to be told.

We visited as part of the combined ticket for the attractions on the hill in the old town of Liperi. Pretty impressive for such a small town.
Architecturally, it is a mix of styles from Norman to Baroque.
Beautiful ceilings and religious art.

Not amazing like so many other Italian Cathedrals such as Milano Duomo, or Firenze Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, but still beautiful.
It is the most interesting church in Lipari, and as there are not that many stunning architectural attractions in Lipari (the best ones being the trips to the volcanoes) I believe you should visit it.
It will be bundled in your tour visiting the Castle and enjoying the beautiful vies on the see.

The church is accessed by an imposing staircase. The church interior is a real art treasure - a multitude of altars according to the degree of holiness accorded to the dedicated saint decorate every side of the church. HP The host to whom the church is dedicated occupies the position of honour at the right hand of the altar maggiore. There is also a beautiful secluded cloister that had been sealed for for centuries and only recently had been rediscovered. It used to be a graveyard, it is now kept in good conditions especially the beautiful original columns supporting the cloister. You have to pay one euro to see this but it is well worth it.

Beautiful building in the gorgeous town and island of Lipari. You get so lost here that you forget it’s an island, it could easily be on the mainland in your mind. The interior is sumptuous and will exercise your camera. Just don’t ask how St Bartholomew was martyred, especially before lunch.

Beautiful interior. Great photo opportunity from the bottom of the steps. If you prefer to use a ramp go round to the other access to the museum , which is in the same area at the top of the hill. If you take the bus up to Pianocente there are some great pcitures of the church from there or if on a day trip on the boats as they leave harbour. No charge for entrance

Beautiful Cathedral set above the town of Lipari on a promontory which separates the two ports. Well worth the climb up to see this historic building Also Barry close to some of the ancient ruins of pre historic village ruins
