‪Unfortunately, having made a special and lengthy journey to visit this museum, it was closed. We had checked the website and arrived within its advertised opening hours. A member of staff explained that it was closed due to ‘poor management’ which I assume mean’t staffing issues. Such a shame as we would have loved to see it. Unfortunately, random closures seem endemic in the Abruzzo region where every shop, museum and institution seem to change their minds on opening times on a quite frequent basis!‬

‪On visiting the information centre, it was suggested that we visit the Museo Della Battaglia di Ortona, which we did. This is a space dedicated to the memory and peace between peoples. It is a museum of reconciliation to restore those moral values that support love and banish war. The museum displays the bravery of the Canadian forces who on 7 December 1943 crossed the Moro River and formed a bridgehead, which became the key to unlocking the German defences in front of Ortona. The town was the site of terrible destruction by German bombers and the retreating German army and it is just amazing how the town has now been proudly rebuilt. During the Second World War, Abruzzo was directly on the war front for nine long months. After landing in Sicily, the Allied Armies progressed northwards up the Italian peninsula. The British 8th army under the command of General Bernard Montgomery landed on the Adriatic Coast. After 8 September 1943, with the foundation of the Italian Social Republic and the German occupation, the Italian Peninsula became one of the chief theatres of the war in Europe. Hitler had himself determined that the Gaeta-Ortona line be “defended with determination”. The German army transformed the Abruzzo, Southern Lazio and Northern Molise into a “defend to the death” battlefield using their techniques of brutality and ferocity. They rounded up civilians, looted, deported, slaughtered and razed to the ground. Having walked up these mountains in this region, we cannot imagine how these soldiers dealt with carrying their equipment and supplies, let alone while under attack. This museum is a stark reminder of what the people of Abruzzo suffered during World War II and why people from the Allied countries, particularly Canadians, are so welcomed in this Region. While entry to the Museum is free, there is a box for receiving donations at the door, all of which go towards the upkeep of the Museum. There is also a Canadian War Cemetry located just outside Ortona, which we drove past, but did not have time to visit.‬

‪This was a touching and interesting documentation and Italian gratefulness to the Canadian soldiers of WW2. This museum points to the sacrifices and skills of the Canadian troops in one of the toughest battles in Italy. It is worth the visit.‬

‪This museum is a tribute to the Canadian soldiers who fought in Ortona during the second World War. It is filled with pertinent information, artifacts and artwork depicting this sad event in our history. The Canadians did win the battle but at a very hight cost in terms of lives taken.‬

‪An excellent museum clearly depicting the battle of Ortona, putting it into context of the war in Italy in general, and describing how it unfolded. While the exhibits probably show more from the perspective of the Allied troops, there is also plenty from the side of the local population caught up in the events and of the German troops.
I came away with a much better appreciation of the events of 1943.
It is worth taking some time to read the various boards and the model of the town showing the destruction was really sobering.‬

‪Ortona was one of the bloodiest battles of the Italian Campaign. This village on the Adriatic had been reduced to rubble. Canadian and German troops engaged in house-to-house fighting. Snipers, booby traps and land mines were a constant threat. Every building was paid for in blood.

If you are a visiting Canadian, especially as we approach the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Ortona, you must visit this hidden gem. The collection is impressive, and the staff are very helpful. Without visits, and donated money, it is my fear that this museum will not be able to stay operational, and a huge piece of Canadian history will be lost.‬

‪We visited this museum with the Grande Prairie Army Cadets tour of Italy with EF Tours. Excellent displays and lots of Canadian history including our Regiment - the Loyal Edmonton.

Interesting to hear about how the staff still keep in contact with the Canadian Regiments.

Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in war history.

Our Cadet unit made a donation and they are going to use it for a display case.‬

‪My father fought in the Battle of Ortona and told many stories of it while he was alive, so it was a sobering time for me to realize more of what he had experienced. The museum has many details and pictures of the battle with chronological descriptions of the lead up to and the battle itself. Many artifacts have been donated to the museum, particularly by the Seaforth Highlanders. Anyone interested in the Second World War and in particular, Canadians, should make this a destination during their trip to Italy.‬

‪A very large museum commemorating one of the most urban battles ever. Well organized, with plenty of artifacts, a good description of events and troop movements and even a little room for prayer for the fallen and their families. A must see while in the area‬

‪This private museum includes an incredible collection of uniforms, weapons, and accessories of the soldiers fighting in Ortona, as well as mementos and accounts of the battle from civilian residents.
Models of the town during and after the battle are very well put together and add extra perspective. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in WWII history.‬
