The facade of this church, like many others in the city, is really special because of its colors and pattern. Moreover, inside, it is possible to admire "The Visitation", a work in vitrified terracotta very fascinating, representing the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth.

The Romanesque church was built in the 14th century on the site of the old Lombard church which was located outside the city walls, hence its name “Fuoricivitas” meaning “outside the city”. It is a huge structure with nice facade and very interesting interior. The most notable work is the white ceramic glaze by Luca della Robbia named “Visitation”.

Drove off the A11 at Pistoia on our way to Florence, solely to visit the church of San Giovanni Fuoricivitas. This is not a cathedral by any measure, but its simplicity has the effect of making its few architectural or decorative elements stand out clearly. As other reviewers have pointed out, the striped walls already set apart this church from others before you even step in. The interior does not have a baroque cover-every-inch decoration but a much older, simpler, style which draws the eye to the sculptural gem inside: the elevated pulpit carved with very expressive figures and scenes all around. Very moving. There are of course other elements inside the church such as the font and the altar, but the pulpit is unlike most you will ever see; take your time and walk around it to get all the details. If you take the side door on the way out, notice the fresco fragments on the top left of the door and imagine how the rest of the wall would have looked originally. We visited in August 2017 and discovered on site that Pistoia had been named cultural capital of Italy for that year. So there was a long program of cultural events planned but we could only spend a couple of hours in Pistoia before getting back on the road.

The church in itself is not special, although the side facade with its typical medieval stripped marble is incredible. Inside again it is a typical medieval church but there is one of the most unusual medieval pulpits I have ever seen. On one side it is attached to the wall instead of the usual free standing on four columns. Try to see it.

The facade is amazing with its antique stripes.
It holds excellent pieces of art, altars, baptismal fonts and painting.

at some point in the middleages Pistoia counted 115 churches, for a population of 8000 people. The catholic church at the time was certainly onje of the main employers! San Giovanni Fuorcivitas, ie St John outcide the city walls, is one of those 115 churches, Strikinggly beautiful is the freeze above the main entrance, depicting the last supper. Try and count the figures: Jesus in the middle, and 12 apostles. Can you find all twelve? Including Judas, kneeling on the low part of the sculpture? and John, leaning hi head on Jesus's shoulder?

A church with an impressive and very distinctive exterior. Inside it was somewhat of a different story, as the interior was rather gloomy making it difficult to make out any details. Since it is free, however, it is definitely worth popping in if you are passing by.

With such a bravura front it would be difficult for the interior to match it. This most extraordinary of buildings proclaims wealth with its show facade to the street. Internally it is dark and pretty boring apart from the exceptional pulpit which is well worth studying...like the one at nearby St Bartolomeo. Worth a few minutes visit, and like all the churches, completely free.

The church of San Giovanni has very ancient origins , probably dating back to the Lombard period . At the time of its foundation it was located outside the first urban circle and for this reason it took the name of Fuorcivitas. In 1119 the then bishop of Pistoia reported the poor state of preservation of the building asking for restoration works that lasted until 1344. Its current appearance dates back to the twelfth - fourteenth centuries, has two-tone decoration, white and green, in the Pistoia Romanesque style. Before crossing the threshold of the church it is necessary to observe the rich portal with the lintel where the Last Supper is depicted , the work of the master Gruamonte dated 1166. Eleven apostles are observed dining with the teacher while Judas, the traitor, is depicted below before Christ to emphasize his unfamiliarity with the holiness of the group. Admission is charged, 4 euros well spent. Although the church is a little dark it retains valuable works.
We highlight the polyptych by Taddeo Gaddi depicting the Madonna with Child and Saints dating back to 1350-53, the Visitation in white glazed terracotta by Luca della Robbia commissioned by the Pistoia family of the Fioravanti that strikes the visitor for the significant linking of arms and meeting of looks between the Virgin, standing , and Saint Elizabeth genuflected in adoration , the marble holy water font carved with the cardinal virtues in the upper part supported by caryatids depicting the theological virtues of uncertain attribution but which is traced back to the scope of Giovanni Pisano . The parchment made by Fra' Guglielmo da Pisa in 1270 in which scenes from the Gospel are depicted and , on the sides of the cash register, the evangelists. The sculptures are in high relief, in Apuan marble embellished with polychrome glass pastes only partially preserved.

The church of San Giovanni Fuoricivitas is a structure located in the historic center of Pistoia and among the first that can be visited if you come here by train. Externally recognizable by the classic green and white colours, the church was originally located outside the city walls. Today it is possible to visit it for a modest price and it contains very nice works.

sorry, I wouldn't know. In Italy churches are generally open all day, and certainly on Sundays mornings.
