Pistoia has at least two advantages: 1. It is located at a stone throw from both Pisa and Florence, about half way between both, and very close as well to Lucca and to Montecatini-Terme; 2. It is hardly visited by tourists, and yet is as important historically as Lucca (having been, as Lucca, a city-state arch enemy to Florence, Pisa and Siena in the Middle Ages), and certainly a close second to Lucca in beauty, if not more beautiful.
When in Pistoia, do visit the Duomo and the Baptistery, and the square of the Scala where they hold the open market, and S. Giovanni Fuorcivitas, and San Francesco, and the church of San Paolo as well... And you will realize how marvelously, and humbly, beautiful Pistoia is.
And when you are done with the churches, and you have seen the Museo Civico, and some of the superb pieces it contains, and walked through the medieval streets, you may reach the main library - the biblioteca Forteguerriana, named after the Pistoiese family, Forteguerri. As you admire its architecture, you may be surprised to learn that it was, until WWII, the main high school of Pistoia, where people like Forteguerri and Pacini (the famous anatomist) studied.
Inside, you will find a friendly staff that is fluent in English, a modern elevator that takes you to a 19th century-style reading room, and special collections that are unique, well kept and well catalogued.
Any book lover, and any lover of old books, of precious archives, of unique finds in Latin, vulgate, old Italian, modern Italian, and -yes - some (few) in English, and any lover of reading in the quaint silence and time suspended found only in old libraries will fall in love with the biblioteca comunale Forteguerriana di Pistoia, a true gem within the gem that Pistoia itself is - not for nothing has Pistoia earned the title of Capital of Culture of all of Italy for 2016-17!
