An absolutely brilliant museum, not old and stuffy but full of interesting things based on the textile heritage of the city.
Whilst it gives a little information on the manufacturing process it specialises much more on textiles in general and comes right up to date with the environmentally friendly textile recycling.
The museum is complemented by a significant display and history of the works of a leading Italian fashion designer.
Well worth a visit.

We went to see the Mr and Mrs Clark Exhibition. There was a very nice book published in Italian and English to accompany it. The show was comprehensive, well labelled, informative. Delicious inexpensive coffee and sandwich in the cafe.

We visited this museum on a Sunday spent in Prato. We booked the afternoon guided tour of the exhibition "Turandot e l'Oriente fantastico", which for the first time brings together the costumes - kept in various public and private locations - prepared for the first performance of Giacomo Puccini's opera "Turandot" (Teatro alla Scala in Milan, 1926).
The guide was comprehensive and engaging, among other things recalling the Turandot plot to visitors - not a few - who didn't have an exact memory of it. The sumptuous "parade" of costumes doesn't exhaust the exhibition: a very large - and preliminary - space is dedicated to the many objects brought from Siam (present-day Thailand) by Galileo Chini, Puccini's set designer, who stayed there in 1912-13.
Overall, costumes and objects were effectively illustrated, evoking well the "orientalist" imaginary in whose context the writing, putting into music and the representation of Turandot developed.
The visit, on the other hand, only marginally concerned the permanent exhibitions of the Museum: which were visited by us visitors not in groups, but individually.
I have no doubt that the permanent exhibitions are also excellent, for the quantity and value of the material collected. However, from what I could see, the didactic part concerning the processes of the textile business didn't seem outstanding to me. Maybe because I had just seen the "Museo dell'arte della lana (Museum of the art of wool) in Stia (Casentino, province of Arezzo)?

I collect and work in textile art. My husband loves history. Together, we enjoyed this little museum very much. Very accessible and educational--and the exhibits are a feast for the eyes. The gift shop and cafe are also very lovely, especially when it is warm enough to sit outside in the courtyard.

Prato was a day trip from Florence for me and had turned into a major disappointment with several places being closed and my inability to find a couple of other places. On the way back to the train station I saw that a textile museum was basically just a jog from my route so I decided to try and find it and hope it was open. And I did and it was and I was so glad because it is a fantastic history of the textile industry in Prato. It's just two floors with the first housing a lovely gift shop and then a huge room with case after case after case of various pieces of fabrics, some dating back as far as the 13th to 14th century. And, for almost every piece displayed, there is a written explanation in Italian AND English!! If you are at all interested in fabrics, fibers, beautiful handwork, etc., or if, like me, you've just spent the day trying to find something in Prato that you can actually visit, this museum should fill the bill.

Any port in a storm on a wet afternoon, so we went in to this museum with no high hopes. At the reception desk was a very informative and enthusiastic young woman, who spoke excellent English. The first room contains a collection of very old fabrics, with explanations (in English and Italian), of how they were made. The room is quite dark (to protect the fabrics). Further exhibits describe the history of Prato as a textile producing town, and an interesting display of different textiles produced from animal, vegetable and artificial sources.
This may sound dry and of limited general interest, but we left (after the rain had stopped) feeling we had learned something.

There is a lovely display of exotic, historical fabrics, with lots of information on each. A display showing the different varieties of composition of textiles and a film of the history of textiles in Prato. Also a board display about the life of Leonardo da Vinci. Lots of antique machinery including spinning and weaving looms etc.

Prato has been a textile production center since at least the middle ages. There were 2 special exhibits when we visited: Luxury fabrics from the early Renaissance and contemporary Chinese fabric art. The former added depth to our appreciation of paintings of important people seen later in museums. The physical structure of the museum is large and they have good displays about materials and techniques. Way off the tourist track.

This museum has a small but significant collection of extremely early fabrics, mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries, which are very well presented. It then moves on to fairly standard stuff about fabric production. Given the size of the building at their disposal it's a pity that the curators don't allocate more space to the story of textile development, particularly in Prato. However for anybody interested in the history of textiles this is still a 'moist see'. The audio guide for the early exhibits is highly recommended.
