‪I visited this lovely centre and experienced how proud the Sligo people are of their musical heritage. There is a really superb exhibition on the music of Sligo with an interactive display of the famous musicians and their music on the first floor. The staff were really nice and welcoming. There is also a well stocked shop with books, Cds and instruments. A must visit on a trip to Sligo ‬

‪Brought a group of 48 persons from 27 countries here recently. Fantastic music and dancing provided by friendly talanted performers. Extremely high standard of music and dance. Finding accommodation for all was a challenge but well worth the effort to have such a wonderful experience‬

‪We visited the center with a group and had a one hour lesson to play the Bodhràn drum and learned about the traditional music of Sligo. It was very inspiring and fun! Our teacher also played for us the bones; he is a world champion!! I liked the gift shop and found a nice penny whistle. ‬

‪I'd highly recommend this Academy as the best summer school for those wishing to excel. All levels are catered for and Junior and his wife Jelca will make sure that you feel at home. ‬

‪This museum is dedicated to the memory of Michael Coleman, whose influence on the popularity of traditional Irish music was seminal. There's an informative video and an engaging interactive display, both of which cover the basics of traditional Irish musical instruments and dance. The staff are very friendly and helpful, always pleased to see people who've come off the beaten track to visit the centre. The entry charge is modest and there's a small shop selling CDs of local and international artists. Well worth a visit, certainly if you want to learn more about traditional Irish music. ‬

‪What a wonderful traditional Irish performance. We arrived at about 8.40pm for the 9.00pm show, we paid and went through to be seated. Our party consisted of 2 adults 2 pensioners (80+) and an 8yr boy. The seating is much like arena seating, albeit a much smaller venue, so no matter where you are sat you have a good view.We were lucky enough to watch a show with singing, dancing and some traditional Irish music. The singing was beautiful nut it was the music and dancing that got the feet tapping. My only complaint is that I would have liked an alcoholic drink but the only option was white wine. My husband would have preferred a Guinness and myself and the rest of the group would've liked a brandy/whisky. However there was free tea, coffee, juice and biscuits at the interval. Not quite what we'd hoped for but did us til the end, which was around 11.30pm. All in all a pretty good evening had by all, even our 8yr son thoroughly enjoyed the show. ‬

‪What a evening!!

We went across to Gorteen from Sligo to hear some traditional music at The Coleman Music Centre.
On the evening we chose there was a junior music seisiún going on and it was a real treat. All the instruments you would expect were featured played by children ranging from about 3 to around 17. (check out my photo of the Bohran player and his Dad - he had a dummy in his mouth and he was approx. 3 years old). He was having a great time.

The children came from far and wide and were well managed by their music teacher (?).

Tea and biscuits were served at the interval and the entrance was free (the proceeds from raffle tickets helped to raise some funds)

It was a fantastic evening and one I will always remember.

NOTE: If you travel from Sligo be careful on the road from Ballymote to Gorteen - its a challenge.‬

‪We called in here as we are music fans. The staff were very welcoming and the 10 minute video was interesting as was the exhibition upstairs. They even made us a coffee at the end. There is a good selection of CDs to choose from and we came home with a few.‬

‪This is not just a great museum of the history of Irish Music, it is a working archive that has collected years worth of information. The exhibits are limited, but chocked full of information and the curators are a pleasure to talk with. I had a wonderful hour after the museum visiting the archives and seeing how the collect new information, stories and music.‬
