‪It's a dream for young and old alike.‬

‪In my home county and been on the list for years and yet I've never got round to it, but now I have, and it was worth the wait.

Plenty of parking on the field by the centre and a cafe by the entrance. Toilets inside and out. Having entered, and paid the very cheap £5, you go through a timeline of history and some artefacts before entering the roundhouse. The turntable, complete with loco, is demonstrated on the hour between 11.00 - 2.00pm. There are various locos, waggons, shunting engines and more dotted round the turntable, films playing and lots of information boards about the engines and about the working life.

Outside you can see the signal box, but not visit it, see the diesel and Intercity trains then visit the Deltic workshop where engines are currently being restored. My parents and us spent a couple of hours here. I was also told it's worth revisiting as trains change and they have special events.‬

‪So worth the effort!!!‬

‪I've always liked Barrow Hill, so, after the privations of the (BEEP) pandemic, we wondered what it might be like, with 18 months of little work being done. We weren't disappointed, though. The few engines in the turntable were a delight to see, especially with some of them having steps up to the cab. As ever, all the personnel were bright, cheerful enthusiastic, which makes a visit anywhere much better. The cafe is tremendous, bright and airy, great quality and fabulously clean. The management even encouraged me to park my 1979 MGB GT on display in front of the building. A great day, 3 hours were never better spent‬

‪Superlative‬

‪This unique venue is ridiculously cheap. For £5 you gain access to a roundhouse with an impressive array of steam and diesel locomotives. There are also other locomotives on site which are visible from a viewing platform. The cafe is also good value.‬

‪Great to get taken back in time with this good experience‬

‪A good place to visit to see these old workhorses of days gone by. We went on a special photographic event so had more to interest us and give them more "life". There is a lot to look at; also a good cafe and they do a number of family events.
One visit would be enough for me but it was an interesting exoerience.‬

‪Interesting museum run by enthusiastic volunteers‬

‪This was a real a trip down memory lane, with lots of local information and anecdotes. A fantastic collection of engines and train paraphernalia, of interest to adults and children alike. We spent more than an hour looking around and then had a snack in the cafe. Long time since I have had a cob - a northern staple!‬

‪An incredible improvement over the years.‬

‪I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Barrow Hill Roundhouse, which has a unique atmosphere. However, we hadn't been for a goodly while because of family commitments. Boy, has somebody been busy!! Whereas there used to be a fairly grotty (although perfectly)functional cafe, there is now a new food outlet, which was spotlessy clean, bright and airy. The food was extremely good, my bacon and sausage cob (bun/roll/breadcake/plain teacake/butty/muffin) being about half of a pig, beautifully cooked and thoroughly satisfying. The coffee was good, and nobody ever mentioned Flat White, Cappucino, Latte, Mocca, Expresso or Il Duce Grossa Fiat a la Stromboli!! You have no idea how grateful I was! The museum - the roundhouse is pretty special on it's own, but with an array of great locomotives, steam and diesel, it looked great. Two particular favourites, for the anoraks amongst you, are Midland Compound 1000 and Butler Henderson, but these are rotated with other stuff from the National Railway Museum and other museums. Took loads of pictures. Outside was pretty impressive too, with a superb collection of diesels, a new spur and the Deltic Preservation Society, we spent the best part of four hours here. Whether you are a railway buff or not, the place is well worth going to, and not just for the bacon!!! The welcome and friendliness was remarkable!!‬

‪Enjoyable Visit.‬
אוג׳ 2019
‪We arrived at lunchtime so took advantage of the excellent little café at the entrance great food, reasonably priced. The entrance fee is not expensive and is spent on the restoration of the engines. The history of the site was well documented in the first building with a short film of the Newton Heath engine sheds, just 2 miles from where I live in Manchester. The roundhouse contained a number of steam and diesel locomotives some under restoration The outside area could have been better if much of the site was not out of bounds, we would have loved to have had a look in the signal box, also the Deltic shed was not open.

The site is well looked after and all the volunteers were friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit.‬
