Worth a Quick Visit

Due to its city center location do stop by for a quick look. Not too much to see other than the arch itself, most of the adornments have been lost.

Quite interesting for its dimension

Although the Arch is not among the top roman remains in Merida, it’s interesting for its dimension and for being located in the heart of the city. Enjoy!

Why Trajan?

Nobody knows. The arch itself is 15 metres high and not so surprising to see in Merida - a city full of Roman remains. located on the main street of ancient city - Cardo Maximus running north-south and the arch is believed to be an entry to the sacred area - a temple dedicated to imperial worship. Nowadays it's a popular photo sight.

we found this wonderful Roman Arch while strolling around the center of town. its just there! and its been there since time immemorial. its a testament to the ingenuity and durability of roman construction. Hail Cesar!

Lovely little area

Just under the Archway there's a little square (plaza) with a couple of restaurants/bars. Nice relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat.

During Roman times, people would have walked under the Arco de Trajano to access a colossal temple of the imperial cult, the religion that regarded emperors and some of their relatives as gods.

Merida is big on Roman remains and we walked through the Arch, by chance, on our way back to the car and it is certainly impressive and to be admired!

Best bit about this arch, due to most of it being robbed away is that a couple of nice tapas bars are in the corner and it makes it romantic. Hey it is nearly a couple of thousand years old so let's give it a break

Visit of the historical centre of Merida.

A location not to miss when visiting the historical centre of Merida is the “Trajan Arch”. This arch has being built in the first half of the first century AD C. in Augusta Emerita, it is an entrance arch to the provincial forum. The arch is made out of granite, and covered in marble in its origin, he measures 13.97 m high, 5.70 m wide and 8.67 m corresponding to the light of the arch. Very special thing to see on your visit.
