‪On Gorodets Lenin Street, right across the road from the local history museum, I quite unexpectedly found an interesting object of cultural heritage of regional significance, officially called the “O.K. Sotina - G.D. Malysheva". Just don’t be surprised, but under this “nickname” there are FIVE structures hidden at once!!! Yes, yes, I didn’t make a reservation: this object is an outbuilding, a gate, the main house, stretching for as much as 53 meters along the “red line” of Lenin Street from left to right, a gate, the main house, again a gate and again an outbuilding!!! And all this architectural interest is united by the address part on Lenin Street at numbers 6, 8 and 10. But what struck me first of all was the inscription on the sign attached to the facade of the main house, or rather this part of it: “Estate of the Gorodets peasants. .." Dear mother, I wish I could live like this!!! A huge estate in the very center of the famous merchant village on the banks of Mother Volga!!! Tell me, have you seen such a “megalithic” PEASANT estate somewhere else? Personally, no... Of course, I couldn’t pass by and, despite the disgusting rainy weather, I managed to take a number of photographs of what I saw. About architecture - a little lower. In the meantime, a couple of “touches” for these unusual peasants of Gorodets, who could afford to buy such SOMETHING. Referred to on the sign as “O.K. Sotin” is the scion of a merchant family, Osip (Joseph) Kornilovich Sotin, whose ancestor Kornilo actually came from the palace peasants of the Nikolo-Pogostinsky volost, who worked as an ordinary barge hauler. But the peasant spirit pushed him to start building piers (well, of course - after all, we are on the Volga!!!). Gradually becoming the owner of almost three dozen berths, this cunning peasant took up barge building - a popular topic in the Volga region. Having made quite a lot of money, Kornilo handed over the business to his son, Osip. It was the latter, who had already joined the merchant class (although some researchers have doubts about this) and ordered the construction in the center of Gorodets on Kupecheskaya Street of a very architecturally advanced mansion in the classicist style with elements of the eclecticism that became popular at that time. The visual dominant of the estate is, of course, the two-story main house with its seven light axes along the facade, generally designed in the style of classicism. This is evidenced by the main set of elements of external decor: we see a “flattened” triangular pediment with a small semi-circular window, and a cornice with denticles, and the rustication of the first floor, and straight sandals with brackets for the second floor windows, etc. At the same time, four fluted pilasters with decorative motifs in the form of rosettes instead of capitals in the piers of the upper floor windows, as well as corner pilasters with figured panels, refer us to the eclectic style. The elegance of the building is also emphasized by the color scheme of the facade - a pleasant combination of yellow walls and white decorative elements. The gates and two outbuildings flanking the main manor house (which, by the way, are different in their architecture) are no less interesting architecturally, would you agree? This is the kind of cuteness that the peasant merchant Osip Sotin built for himself. But why is there another surname in the name of the house? It was more difficult to figure this out... But I did manage to find out that after the owner of the estate left for the “Land of Happy Hunting”, this complex was inherited by his sister Varvara Kornilovna (married to Oblaeva), since O.K. Sotin was childless. And after Varvara’s death in 1896, the “Sotin” inheritance passed to her daughter Anna Fedorovna Oblayeva and the latter’s husband, Gerasim Denisovich Malyshev. This is how the second surname appeared in the name of the object. Although, to be blunt, G.D. Malyshev had a very indirect connection directly to the estate itself. Be that as it may, the object I described on Lenin Street in Gorodets is very interesting and very photogenic (though I would recommend visiting it in sunny weather)...‬
