‪"IVAN TURGENEV did for Russian literature what Byron did for English literature; he led the genius of Russia on a pilgrimage throughout all Europe. And in Europe his work reaped a glorious harvest of praise. Flaubert was astounded by him, George Sand looked up to him as to a master, Taine spoke of his work as being the finest artistic production since Sophocles. In Turgenev’s work, Europe not only discovered Turgenev, but it discovered Russia, the simplicity and the naturalness of the Russian character; and this came as a revelation." (Maurice Baring) Turgenev's estate in the deep of the Oryol province is very much unlike the Yasnaya Polyana of his friend and peer Leo Tolstoy - Spasskoye-Lutovinovo is a charming, cozy, instrinsically simple yet mysterious piece of land that includes Turgenev's manor, the breathtaking park and a pond and the stables - all surrounded by peaceful and wild beauty of the Russian countryside. You can even hire a carriage to take you around the park or a boat to enjoy a quiet ride over the pond. The guides are well-versed in speaking English, German and French and will provide you with glorious tales of Turgenev's life, both domestic and in society, while taking you around the manor and the park. Very much recommended to both nature and sights lovers, it is relaxing, engaging and enriching. You will be able to feel the immense inspirational atmosphere that the writer experienced in the days of living and writing in Spasskoye. But be prepared to walk a lot :) To get to the estate from Oryol you need to travel by a suburban train to Mtsensk. There you need to take a taxi or a bus - there are regular buses "Mtsensk - Spasskoye-Lutovinovo" departing from the Mtsensk bus station.‬

‪Comming from the muddy Yasnaya Polyana, which wasn't at its brightest in rainy April, I was pleasantly surprised by Turgenev Estate ain Spasskoye-Lutovinovo. The biggest obstacle is getting there, it's a bit off the main road, but after that you'll be welcome by nice staff, offering to do the tour in English if neccessary and all areas open. We had a private tour with a lovely guide who was able to answer many additional questions and was very pleasant throughout. The reconstructed house is beautiful as well as the gardens. Highly recommended if you're nearby.‬
