‪If you are in the area it's worth a brief detour to visit this fascinating site. Do not climb over the viewing barrier or go near the bubbling sulfurous water.
In Roman mythology, Mefitis (or Mephitis; Mefite in Italian) was the late personification of the poisonous gases emitted from the ground in swamps and volcanic vapors. "Mephitic", derived from Mefitis, is now an adjective in the English language meaning "offensive in odour"; "noxious"; and "poisonous."
In Italian, a mefite is also a solfatara or fumarole (i.e., a gaseous fissure) associated with the Roman Goddess Mefitis. The feature giving rise to this term, the Solfatara volcano, is located in Italy along the Via Appia between Rome and Brindisi. There, the ancient Romans would rest on their travels and pay homage to the goddess by performing animal sacrifices using the fissure's deadly gases. Today, it lies near the village of Rocca San Felice in the province of Avellino.‬

‪It is difficult to find. We had a guide. Which was great to get the history and explanation. It is an amazing sight. Rolling green hills coming down to a grey void of life world. It's fascinating. Worth seeing. Smell was not bad at all. ‬

‪It's difficult to find and not really good signilized or promoted, but it's fascinating for the ancient history that the site still want to tell. It seems abandoned. You can see boiling smelly mud in a wild landscape.

è stato difficile da trovare, anche perché poco segnalato e messo in risalto, però è affascinante per la sua storia antica. C'è un laghetto di fango puzzolente e bollente in un contesto piuttosto selvaggio.‬

‪Way before you reach Mefite, the permeating smell of sulphur hits your nostrils as you drive along the beautiful mountains. The area around the small bubbling lake does resemble a lunar landscape, and the site is definitely in need of some serious attention since it obviously has been neglected. There's a picnic table just a few stairs up from the end of the drive, and the smell isn't quite as bad from that point. Be aware that the drive is only wide enough for one car and is basically a dead end, so if anyone comes up behind you, you'll need to wait until they're ready to leave. At the time we visited, four vintage cars drove up, one being a Lamborghini, so I was perfectly fine waiting on them and took photos of the cars while waiting.‬
