‪I went to the Abramtsevo Museum today and what a pleasure it was. The plethora of artists, sculptors and woodworkers that have grace the estate is long and distinguished.
I went specifically because I wanted to learn more about Mikhail Vrubel and I wasn’t disappointed with a fair amount of his ceramic ware on show. My Russian guide did the translation for me as the museum gude didn’t speak English. Once again, it you don’t speak English you have to have a translator as there is a lot of information to take in.
This is a very genre specific museum but if Russian art and particularly the Russian version of the British Arts & Crafts movement then this will peak your interest.
Just some of the names of artists who frequented Abramtsevo, Repin, Gogol, Vasnetsov, to name but a few.
The underlying story is about how Savva Mamontov used the estate to sponsor so many successful artists. ‬

‪Abramtsevo Estate Museum is at the small village area of Abramtsevo about 60 km northeast of Moscow. It can be reached from Moscows Yaroslavl station. Note there is a new train service and times. It is on the rail line from Moscow to Sergev Posad. For us it was a great adventurous day away from Moscow after a week of grand palaces and busy city activity.
The Estate is famous because of its role in the Arts and Craft Movement in Russia (similar to William Morris in the UK) I read it is open from Wednesday to Sunday, but we went on Friday and found the buildings closed though the park was fully open to wander around. However the exterior of the architecture is so interesting and beautiful that we still had a wonderful time there. There is also a lovely shop in the grounds which sells very tasteful souvenirs of the estate an beautiful crafts and art. The houses/buildings represent different styles and purposes, from elegant Mansions to beautifully wooden carved traditional cottages. These were places where famous artists came, worked and rested. I loved the beautiful little ceramic church and the little Baba Yaga (witches) hut (from the cihldren's fairytale. This place has such arts and cultural history and there is plenty on the Internet to give you background information before you go. I would advise researching so you can appreciate Abramtsevo to the full.
The park is beautiful and there is a lovely circular walk through open forest, along the lake and meadows.‬

‪We chose not to pay the photo fee, we hate those kinds of fees geared toward making money. The pond was lovely, and quiet when we visited in the morning. My favourite building was the former bathhouse, the intricate wood carving was beautiful. ‬

‪There are a number of ticket options to visit this reserve, and there is a photography fee if you plan to take photos inside any of the buildings. We visited in May, it was a gorgeous time of year. ‬

‪We visited this estate on our way from Sergiev Posad to Moscow. We got to visit houses and grounds in old Russian style built around 1870's. Interesting, green, and peaceful.‬

‪Here is beating heart of Russian Art! This beautiful place remembers great artists. The holders was Aksakovs and Savva Mamontov.
Interior of the manor house shows taste and manner of people lived here and their guests. Following narration of guide you'll feel the breathing of epoch. Take your attention to impressive stove "perch". Try to image Gogol in his room... And Serov's girl with peaches at the same table in the same room... Also you can see interesting table-cloth made by women of Mamontov's family.
Out of manor house don't forget to visit Teremok which was first built as a bathhouse, the Little House with chicken legs for children, the bench made by Vrubel, old oak tree that have seen all of people was living and working here. You will understand that the very place inspired Vasnetsov to paint his Three Heroes.‬

‪The house of a meduim level novelty family, who supported a "court" of artists and founded a school for woodcraft to help local youth make their living. The local guide (you cannot go in without one) was too enthusianstic to go over any detail and framgment of fact, which was too long and tiresome. The estate is nice, the collection of self made futniture is quite impressive. the small chapel, designed by the estate owners id cute. We skipped the park/garden since we were in a hurryto Moscow to catch our flight.visiting there is not a must.‬

‪The owners of the Abramtsevo estate at different times were the writer Sergei Timofeevich Aksakov and the industrialist Savva Ivanovich Mamontov. During the time of Aksakov, writers Turgenev, Gogol, Zagoskin, poet Tyutchev, actor Shchepkin, and other famous personalities came to the estate. Mamontov invited many famous artists to Abramtsevo, including Repin, Vrubel, Serov, Polenov, and the Vasnetsov brothers. Many famous paintings were painted in the estate, for example “Alyonushka” and “Bogatyrs” by Viktor Vasnetsov, “Girl with Peaches” by Valentin Serov. In the estate, the table at which this girl Vera (the daughter of Savva Mamontov) sat was preserved; a copy of the painting hangs next to it so that you can compare the situation in the room and in the painting, and it turns out that peaches were used to stimulate the girl, who found it very difficult to pose for the artist for a long time. And this is just one of many interesting stories about Abramtsevo that we were told during the excursion. If you have not been to this estate yet, I definitely recommend visiting it.‬

‪State Historical and Art Literary Museum-Reserve "Abramtsevo". Polenovsky Pond is depicted in many works of the famous artist. Other Abramtsevo artists also loved to work here, so this pond went down in the history of Russian painting. The house in the background with a pink roof is Polenovskaya dacha, where Polenov spent his honeymoon after the wedding with his wife, which took place here in Abramtsevo in a recently built church.‬

‪I want to come back here! A wonderful park, an artists' estate...
Wonderful atmosphere, well-groomed grounds, exhibitions, musical accompaniment of walks... Every meter here is saturated with art.
And my favorite movie “2 Days” was filmed here...‬
