Stopped in at the Tasso Island eco resort on our way back from a morning visit to Bunce Island. A lovely welcome from the staff on arrival and cold beer and freshly cooked chicken and rice hit the spot. Wished we had booked an overnight stay on the island. Local eco tourism projects like this need tourist support.

After touring Bunce Island we stopped here for toilets and lunch. Very grateful we weren't staying here.
And glad we didn't see how lunch was prepared till after we ate. The shrimp stew was good. The jollof rice just ok. The chicken so-so and the fish had so many tiny little bones that it was inedible. Got to try the local peanut sauce, and it was good. Cold beers, water, sodas, and fruit juices available as well.
Overall, an interesting stop for lunch, but really happy to go back to our hotel.

A perfect place for a peaceful few days.
I came across by local boat from Freetown (first the Kissy-Tagrin ferry and then a Tagrin-Tasso pirogue) which was a fun experience, however, the lodge can collect you from Freetown.
The island mainly survives on income from fishing, so tourists are welcomed with open arms. The staff at the lodge were very helpful, even though I arrived late on a Saturday night unannounced.
Accommodation is spacious and good value. They prepared vegetarian meals for me.
It's a peaceful place to stay amongst the mangroves - where the only sounds are the birds, circadas and the odd splash of a fisherman passing by. The poor review below mine is inaccurate and written by someone expecting a 5* hotel.

A lot of people and children asking for money. Accomodation basic. Food average. Booked trips started1 to 2 hours later than agreed.

Tasso Island is a short city ferry and pirogue ride away from Freetown, but it provides access to a whole different world. For the history buff, Bunce Island is an close visit away; for the nature buff, the beaches and forests offer a respite from the city; for those interested in local culture, the islanders are welcoming and eager to meet visitors. The accommodation is basic but comfortable at the Tasso Ecotourism Project and the staff are very friendly. A great getaway from big city Freetown, or a good place to spend a few days before catching a plane from Lungi.

What a nice and quiet place! The chalets are really wonderful (spacious, comfortable bed, compost toilet). The staff was very kind and just getting there over the mirror-like river mouth by boat was relaxing. We did a tour of Bunce Island which was very informative and were lucky that Peter, the founder of the project was around to tell us about the history and the future plans. Good luck with all of this!
A little extra bonus: They arranged for us to have a quick stop-over, shower and dinner, of a couple of hours in a hotel near the airport on our way to our flight back. Not the cheapest place but it made all the difference before a long flight. I think you could also ask them to do this in reverse, when you arrive too late to get to the island as your first stop. Just in case there are more tourists as us, which Sierra Leone and Tasso Island would so deserve!
You can swim there, especially at high tide, but it's not like the sea, half fresh, half sea water. Sometimes a bit turbit.
Good to know, just so that you can be conscious about it: there is not so much fresh water on the island. So, save water where you can.
It's a place absolutely worth visiting!

A really unexpected little gem! Tasso Eco Lodge was such a pleasant stay.
A boat (the gladi gladi) from the government wharf was organised to take us over to the island which was approximately one hour away.
The beach was kept in pristine condition with chalets dotted along the beach which were simple but had lovely touches such as a flash light, tea and coffee complete with composting toilet.
The food much of which was grown on the in the project gardens was delicous and the staff were incredibly attentive.
It was the perfect place to relax away from the hustle of Freetown for the weekend

A group of 11 of us visited the Tasso eco lodge this weekend and had a very relaxing stay which exceeded our expectations.
The lodge is set on a very peaceful beach next to the estuary, which was very clean and great for swimming. The staff made us feel very welcome and were friendly yet unobtrusive.
Tasso was easy to get to from Freetown. The team arranged a boat to pick us up from government wharf in the town centre and it took us about an hour and a to get there. The accommodation was comfortable and functional. Though not luxurious there were nice details that made the stay more pleasant such as hot water delivered to the chalets for tea and coffee every morning.
The island was perfect to relax and get away from the bustle of Freetown. However, there were plenty of activities to do if people wanted. Some of the group took a short excursion to Bunce island. There were guided walks through the community, swimming, and Peter the project co-ordinator gave us a guided tour of the set-up including the community garden which has been created.
Overall a really nice place to spend a couple of days and certainly somewhere we will return to!

We have visited Tasso three times now, It is a wonderful escape from Freetown with idyllic waterside eco-chalets which are large and well kept. The trip on their boat the Gladi Gladi from government wharf is all part of the fun. There is a set price for the boat so it makes sense to go in a group. There is also the possibility to visit the local villages and experience some cultural life in the evening. Bunce Island is next door and can be combined easily. Recommended

We aim to have a fixed cost for the Gladi Gladi to make it easier for everyone to plan, but we also assist smaller parties (under 5) by arranging a local speedboat - which reduces fuel cost. Our boats can pick up passengers from Government Wharf and Kissy Ferry Terminal in Freetown or Lungi.
Although our accommodation is already cheap by both international and local standards we are keen to encourage more Freetowners to visit their island so we are in the process of introducing a reduced tariff for Sierra Leoneans.

I stayed in the project for three nights with my girlfriend. It was the most interesting and impressive part of our travels in Sierra Leone. It is as if you travel to another world, even though you can still see the lights of Freetown from the island. They pick you up with a beautiful, colored wooden boat to make the crossing to the island. Once there, the houses are located right at a small beach, 1-2 meters into the forest. As soon as you step out the door on the small veranda you see the waves through some branches. The beach is used solely by the project. The houses are simple but very nice.
The staff is amazing and will do everything do make your stay unforgettable. The restaurant serves delicious food, mostly fresh fish (in fact, the staff bought the fish while we crossed over to the island by pulling up their boat to a fishermen in his canoe in the middle of the water). Thus, the project has every ingredient for an extremely relaxing, romantic trip. Staying at the project is probably the easiest way to visit Bunce Island, a small island which houses the haunting ruins of a former British slave trading post. The staff is very knowledgeable regarding its history and can give you an excellent tour. A must see in Sierra Leone!
What let's the project go beyond your usual relaxing beach outing is its involvement with the local community. All staff members are from the island and are happy to show you around and tell you everything about the community life. The local elders and chiefs (one of which is the mother of a staff member) were involved in setting up the project and thus welcome any visitor warmly and extend their blessing and protection to them. If you wish, the staff can take you on a tour on the island, show you the projects the communities started to improve the islanders' standard of living and tell you about their customs, traditions and life in general.
So whatever you want, the ecotourism project has it: a beautiful, relaxing beach, tons of fun activities, a haunting look into Sierra Leone's history on Bunce Island and it can teach you a ton on the people of Tasso Island and their culture. Whether you want to have a calm escape from Freetowns busy life, immerse yourself into Sierra Leonean culture or history, the project gives you what you want.
To sum this lengthy review up: If you don't visit Tasso Island while staying in Sierra Leone, you will miss out on a great experience!
