We stayed in kata and took a taxi ride to bang Tao one day. I prefer bang Tao.
Sundebds and bars etc are towards the south end of the beach, not vey much happening in the middle.

The beach is lovely. Beautiful sand and lounge chairs are free as long as you buy a drink - even a coke. There is construction everywhere and it is no fun getting to the beach if you are not staying directly on it. The traffic between 4 and 7 is chocked and the roads are very narrow with no sides or sidewalks in most places. They also have a waste water problem where all the hotels direct their sewage right into the water. There is sea lice that feels like a pin prick when they are biting you but don’t get itchy right away. But boy do they get itchy. Expect 2-3 days of being very itchy. I had After Bite and aloe Vera lotion that helped, I read Benadryl helps too. Apparently this is a well known problem along this coast so another beach a bit north or south won’t miss it. I'd say, find a different area to vacation in!

The beach was pretty but lots of plastic bottles and litter everywhere.
A few little bars/restaurants and some beach front located hotels
All the usual massages available along with jet skis.
Lots of jellyfish in the area causing very painful stings 😩

The last time I visited Bang Tao beach was in March 2018. Between then and now, late October 2023, it's apparent that there has been a lot of coastal erosion along the beach. The sand level on the beach must be around one meter lower than it was back in 2018 and this erosion has done some damage to a few of the beach front amenities, Such a shame for this wonderful beach.
Has this erosion happened over time, or have there been recent storms that have done most of the damage?

A safe, wonderful sandy beach . stretching over a mile and a half. Fringed with small restaurants, all wonderful value.

We stayed in a Laguna, beachfront resort on Bang Tao Beach in May 2023. It was quite a shock to return after 5.5years as the beach and towns have become so much busier, traffic heavier, a beautiful beach in decline. Rubbish on the beach can be very confronting and so disappointing. Boat Avenue is almost unrecognisable and has lost it's sophistication. Not sure that we'll return.
We still enjoyed our stay in a beautiful resort, and loved our superb meals at Tom Yam Goong - quality, presentation, service and price perfect.

We stayed in the Laguna area on our two week trip to Phuket, and enjoyed Bang Tao beach most days. The water is so clean, not rough, and happily jet skis etc are limited to certain areas so you can swim safely and peacefully.
It's great to see tourism on the rise again, and people returning to Phuket, but sadly this also brings lazy slobs that can't be bothered putting their rubbish into bins and feel that the sand is the right place to stub out cigarettes. So grubby.
Some great restaurants, bars and a couple of really nice beach clubs to be enjoyed.
It was great to be back in Phuket, and in Bang Tao, and it would be really great to see a more efficient rubbish disposal system in place so that the lazy ones can hopefully find a bin and to help keep it clean for everyone.

Located on the bustling island of Phukel Bangtao is an oasis. Relatively small beach, fine sand, clear waters. Beautiful Beach Clubs (I recommend the Catch Beach club).
Several restaurants on the sand. Compared to other beaches in Phuket, the area for boats and jet skis is relatively small, allowing you to swim freely.

Fab beach, lots of bars and restaurants, some fancier (more expensive) beach clubs too day and night if that's your thing. A few locals walk up and down the beach selling various local crafts, kaftans, beach towels, sarrongs, all very cheap, and the people do not hassle you if you do not want to buy like in some other countries! Live music, fire shows of a night at some places, fire works at beach clubs, happy hours (even though things are really cheap anyway), great food, something for everyone. Lack of toilets was a downside for me, but then that's what happens if you're enjoying beach life at little 'shack' bars, very authentic. Something for everyone!

Bang Tao beach is beautiful at night and there are plenty of bars and activities on the beach to keep you entertained, fed and watered all day and night. However, the cost of food and drink is expensive in Thai terms and we found more difficulties than usual with the staff at hospitality businesses not always able to understand even the most basic English - definitely unusual in Thailand.
When we visited the area in Feb 2023, there seemed to be a lot of Russian tourists (and/or people from that part of the world), and they certainly don't make the most pleasant of tourists to share a holiday experience with - they are typically very rude and selfish.
The transport options in the area are not great. The Grab taxis are really expensive and the Tuk Tuk drivers will extract as much money as possible from you. You're far better off hiring a scooter or walking. Though be careful, because there isn't always a safe place to walk along the roads in Bang Tao.
We stayed at the Diamond Resort, with mixed feelings about it. The rooms were nice, but expensive. The hotel staff were lovely and helpful. The breakfast buffet was small and sometimes crowded, but nice enough. The pool was basic but nice - the modular decking around the pool was in poor condition. The sunbeds around the pool were nearly constantly being 'occupied' by other guests and so it was difficult to be able to find two of them available at any given time. Basically, the rude Russian tourists put their towels and belongings on them all day and night to stop other people using them - even when they are no where to be seen. The hotel offers free transport services to Bang Tao beach and to Boat Avenue via a shuttle bus and that was great. Communicating with hotel staff was also really easy and they were quite accommodating to requests and/or concerns. They facilitated our airport transfers well and other activities.
The Blue Tree water park was a highlight during our stay. It costs about AUD$170 for entry (compared with ~$360 for Andamanda) and was close by. The hotel arranged a shuttle for us there and back for 300Baht. Food was expensive though (AUD$100 for lunch).
The Boat Avenue night market on the Friday night was pretty good and we managed to get some bargains from there. There's also a Swensen's ice creamery there, which is always a highlight of our trips to Thailand.
In summary:
+ Quieter and nicer beaches by Phuket standards
- Not great for party goers
- Not great for walkers
- Not great for the budget conscious
- Too many rude Russian tourists.
By comparison to other areas of Thailand in our opinion:
Koh Samui - Chaweng Beach 10/10
Kumala Beach Phuket 8.5/10
Patong Phuket 8/10
Pattaya 7.5/10
Karon Beach Phuket 7.5/10

We stayed near Bangtao beach in 2014 and there were around 9 or 10 fantastic beach bars and restaurants built on the back of the beach and in front of the hotels. When we returned in 2015, all these had been removed apparently because of money laundering or something?? It was such a shame. Can you tell me if these bars / restaurants have been rebuilt at all? If not, what are the options to have lunch on Bangtao beach?

Hi our family of 6 is travelling to Phuket over Christmas with options to stay at either Kata or Bang Tao What would people suggest is better with older boys who want to go to bars, shops etc

i would suggest Kata with older boys, but if you want a lot of bars and nightlife Patong beach is the place to be, only about 15 to 20 minutes away from Kata.

Idont think you need to hire a driver, just get a tuk tuk driver to drop you off at Jungceylon, all the shops and restaurants are within walking distance and the beach is only 5 minutes away, and then get a tuk tuk back to your destination, Jungceylon is a very big shopping mall with lots to do and see, hope this helps.

Yes we ate at promenade right on the beach front, so cheap we was eating Tbone steak from Australia prepaired as a meal cheaper than we can buy it raw in Australia. They also serve beer too. Many other restraunts and bht300. hour massages. We was having dinner at about 7pm as our free shuttle service from our condo ended about 8.30.

No, not blocked off at all. Very few hotels on the beach ...and none at the South end of the beach.

Всем доброго времени суток. Очень нужна информация по хорошим и недорогим экскурсионным фирмам в районе Банг Тао. Забронировала хороших друзей в Кассию (Лагуна), но ценники там на всё высокие, у туроператора тоже. Ребята не англоговорящие, поэтому очень важно чтоб экскурсии проводили русскоговорящие. Буду очень благодарна за помощь!

Насколько я помню, в районе "Банг-тао" есть "Матрёшка тур" с русскоговорящим персоналом, и ещё какой-то оператор (название не помню). Не переживайте, там полно русскоязычных компаний.

Even better phonetically, "Bang Tau" Tau as in saying towel. Bangtao is a great place to staycation; transport by taxi or tuk tuk is horrendously expensive in Phuket. Bangtao is about 25 minutes away from the main tourist area. If you hire a bike or car it is very cheap about BHT700 per day at the condo we was staying at.

Due to go to Thailand in 2 weeks and much as I ve read good things about bangtao I was worried it would be as you described. We re also looking for something a bit more like the real thing can you recommend anywhere else for a lovely beach scene. Just good food beach and bars but not somewhere where there a Tesco !
