In vypin itself we were in line for more than 1hr 30 min for ferry. Its just a waste of time. Would rather prefer by road. If you are a tourist and has no time limit then can wait on line to get into ferry. The service is also not so good.
Terrible experience it was!!!

Vypeen is one of the group of islands that form part of the city of Kochi. Just north of Fort Kochi and easily accessed by ferry or road. Backwaters and beaches are the attraction.

Vypeen or Vypin Island is one of the group of islands which form the city of Kochi and Ernakulam. It is just north of Fort Kochi and easily accessed by ferry or road. It is an elongated island, about 27 km long and less than 2 km wide at its widest. It is connected to mainland Kochi by a series of bridges known as the Goshree Bridge which is about 3 km long and touches two other islands.
Another way to reach the south end of Vypin Island is by a ferry. There are ferries from Fort Kochi, Bolghatty Island and Ernakulam on the mainland. All the ferries offer scenic rides on the Vembanad Lake backwaters. We crossed over on the Vypin-Fort Kochi ‘Jankar’ ferry with our car, and the crossing took barely 10 minutes, although we had to wait for about 15 minutes to board it.
The drive along Vypin Island is very scenic, although it is supposed to be one of the most densely populated islands in the world. One the western side is the Arabian Sea, and on the east is the scenic backwater. Both sides are lined with pretty palm trees. There is a lighthouse and some pristine beaches lining the seaside, Cherai Beach and Kuzhupilly Beach being the most popular. There are many seaside resorts and restaurants as well on the beach front.
It is worth taking a ferry trip to Vypin Island if you are visiting Kochi or Ernakulam for sight-seeing.

The Vypeen Island is just ten minutes drive from High Court junction and apart from going to Njrakal, Kodungalloor etc by coastal road we go to the Island occasionally to spend evenings. I love the long sandy beach, Munambam fishing harbor, Puthuvype light house, the mangroves, etc and crossing the Goshree bridges it is easy to reach the island. There are few Chinese fishing nets apart from the fishing harbor, the island has good roads and is well connected with nearby attractions like Ernakulam, Cherai, Kodungalloor etc. Nice Island to spend a whole day with family or friends.

Vypeen Island is definitely worth a visit. Suggest you get a tuk tuk or an auto cab to drive you out and about for the day. There are beautiful beaches, very old synagogues and temples and wonderful Indian sights. It really does feel like an India that is fast passing and for that alone it is worth the trip or stay.

It just happened in the last week of September to get out of the hide in the city and to find a comfortable niche of a relaxing evening at the Cape of Vypeen, just 4 kilometres away from High Court Junction, Kochi. September to January evenings will keep you engaged in pleasant surprises at the southern Cape of Vypeen Island. An eventually sinking red-hot ball in the Arabian sea splashes the horizon with brilliant colours! A row of 4 odd Chinese Nets configured aesthetically along the fringe of the curved shore is a visual treat to tranquilize your inner woes. Lofty walkway on the brim of the patch of land invites you for a cool walk relaxing in the lash of slightly saline breeze from the waters. An already brightly-lit-up good old Portuguese-built Roman Catholic church of Our Lady of Hope and its vast front yard bring you unmatched visual experience adding further to great solace. You can also make a short visit to the cemetery adjacent to the church, only to make yourself surprised with its peculiar and rich historical deposits.

Vypeen island is about 25 kms long and 3 kms wide, lush green and thickly populated. It's studded with 5 beautiful beaches and historical hotspots. It takes barely 7-10 minutes to travel between Fort Kochi and Vypeen by Ro-Ro or boat. If you've time from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. it's more than enough to enjoy visiting this unique island. Public transport means are cheap and convenient to travel in Vypeen. Local cuisine especially, that at homes on Cherai beach, offers delicious food to cherish in your memories for ever. Happy travel

Maarari beach is little far. But definitely worth it. Cherai beach has become crowded. Maybe you should go to kuzhupilly beach instead. It is less commercialised compared to Cherai beach. Visit fort cochin and Mattancherry (jew street, jain temple). And since you are coming to vypin the maybe you can also visit matsyafed fish farm njarakkal and light house at puthuvype

What are the usual temperatures in January? Is it humid? Are mosquitoes an issue? Thank you x

Temperatures are 32-34 day / 20-24 night.
There are mosquitoes, so you should be prepared, particularly if you plan to be in the backwaters, bird sanctuaries, etc.
