‪Magical Automata to delight and surprise you‬
חברים • פבר׳ 2017
‪These days we take robots and machines for granted, but even just 100 years ago, automata filled people with wonder. How do they move? It's like magic! This museum has a great collection. My friend and I spent a fascinating hour or two immersed in this magical world.‬

‪As I could only find reviews in Japanese here I am adding a quick review. This is a collection of European automata from around 1850. It looks as though it is the collection of one person, but it's not really made clear. Sadly there are no karakuri here- it seems to be exclusively European. Interesting to see this collection in Japan where automata seem to hold such fascination. We arrived at 2:30 just in time to see a demonstration. They demonstrated four models with great ceremony and reverence. Three of these were quite recent facsimiles of much older models (originals of which are in the museum). One of them, the tea drinker, dates from 1900- and is very entertaining. The museum holds a lot of original models which can be viewed in their static form. Some have movies playing to show their function. Some great weird and uncanny stuff plus some very dubious racial caricatures.
One of the most interesting things to see was the recreated workshop of Michel Bertrand - whom it seems created at least one of the pieces in the demonstration. Here you can see some of the details of the mechanisms, the specialist tools and also the rig for making music boxes.
I can recommend this place if you are passing, have an interest in engineering. Or maybe just want to hang out in a room with a load of slightly creepy looking puppets! ‬
