‪Disappointing for the price of 1100 yens; no English explanation‬
‪אוג׳ 2018‬
‪I am a big fan of museums devoted to archaeology. I knew this one would be a small one, with limited English explanation, but it was advertised all around the city, both in Japanese and English, I had one hour to kill while my wife was at the mass in the church nearby, and it was only 300 yens. Unfortunately, it wasn't. 300 yens is the regular price, for the permanent exhibition. When I came there, it was 1100 yens because of the special exhibition about Silk Road, advertised all around the city in English. I got a discount of 100 yens because I had visited the castle before (good to know!). To be clear: the special exhibition replaces the permanent one and blends in some of its major pieces. The key exhibit of the museum, the splendid stone Apkallu, was fortunately there, completely out of place in the middle of the exhibition, but at least it was there. Without any English explanation (save for the label of the items, and the necessary information about date and location), it was extremely limited. I had hope that the special exhibition would at benefit from some English text, but no, everything was in Japanese, save the exhibition title which was misleadingly translated. During the hour I had, I did the exhibition three times. I usually take longer than average to visit museums, so it gives you an idea of how small the exhibition was. 1100 yens for this is much overpriced. Note, however, that the museum had few interesting pieces to display and it wasn't completely devoid of interest. The exhibition seemed to aim at showing how techniques and artistic trends had circulated along the Silk Road but it wasn't very clear, since most panels were occupied by items from a single area (ex. glasswares from Iran), or when items from different areas were shown, the differences were more outstanding than the common lineage.‬

‪Fine museum, not tourist friendly‬
לבד • יוני 2017
‪This museum was fine-it's mostly different artifacts in glass cases. It's pretty small though and not foreigner friendly. All of the signs were in Japanese. They gave me an English brochure that had information about the museum, but not information about any of the specific exhibits. And it looked like they had an app that potentially described things in English but when I downloaded it there wasn't any content.‬

‪Small museum with some interesting collection‬
זוגות • יולי 2016
‪It is a small muesum funded by some private donator. The collection cannot be compared with major national museums but it is still quite interesting with artifacts mainly from near East region and south America.‬

‪interesting if a bit out of place museum‬

‪So this museum is basically about ancient middle eastern civilizations centred around Iran. The exhibits are interesting but you are not likely going to learn smithing if you do not read Japanese.‬

‪Ancient Orient Collections‬

‪Since I am a big fan of Egypt, I visited there:D
When we visited, it was a duration of special exhibition, so I and my son at age of 9 tried costumes of kings, and made amulets. Of course, the collection is excellent. But for a little kid, the activities were seemed to be fun.‬

‪Unfortunate timing & not 'oriental'‬
זוגות • אוג׳ 2015
‪We went to the museum on a Monday to find it was closed due to a special event for local children. However the staff said we were welcome if we didn't mind the noise of the children, so we paid the entrance fee and went in.
There was nothing in the museum that I would define as oriental. The exhibit downstairs was about the Trojan horse (The kids were going to build one out of cardboard) and most of the artefacts upstairs came from Iran, Italy, Greece etc.
Confused and disappointed. Felt like we wasted the little time we had in Okayama‬

‪Staff do not speak English and not helpful at all. Museum itself is not large and quite a walk from JR Okayama but not entirely bad for a ½ hr stop on the way to the black castle.‬

‪A hidden gem‬
‪The Okayama Orient Museum was a surprise find on my trip to Okayama. There's nothing on the outside which sticks out about the place, and on the inside it's not huge. But I found the exhibits to be very interesting, and although there's not that much on show, what is is presented nicely. It's a very quiet museum which doesn't get many visitors, which enhances experience even more. The cafe is great too. A definite recommendation.‬
