‪Two adults spent about five hours in the History Museum of Mobile on a Friday afternoon in early June. It was not crowded, which made for a pleasant experience. YMMV. The Viking special exhibit was absolutely fascinating—really a world class exhibit. Our only complaint was that we wished it included more items, they were well displayed and explained. Unfortunately, the exhibit will only be there through mid-June. The rest of the museum was well laid out and very interesting, covering the history of the greater Mobile area from prehistory through the Civil War to modern day. All covered very well. More exhibits than we really had time to see, but we tend to read almost all accompanying material. Also included entrance to Reproduction Fort Conde, across the street, which we did not have time for. Our loss. Again, YMMV.‬

‪We did not have time to visit all the museums exhibits which, if they’re as good as the section we saw is a shame. The 22 objects exhibit is detailed and thoughtful and gave information across the centuries. The objects were quirky and well chosen and captured my imagination.‬

‪We visited on a Friday morning. The museum opens at 9AM, early for a museum in Mobile. We saw the Vikings exhibit and the "22 objects" exhibit. The former was ok but limited in its scope. The latter was actually fairly interesting, with a good summary of some of the highlights of Mobile history. We also spent a short time on some the other exhibits. There is a lot to see, and it was pretty interesting.‬

‪Over the years I've learned to appreciate these little city level history museums - when done decently they can convey a sense of what the place was like through time, integrate it into the state and larger context of US history as a whole. The HMM does this pretty well. And, it has better hours than some historic houses, so you can fit it in when others are closed. The civil rights era was addressed in context and, along with several other exhibits had interesting AV display should you want to listen to contemporary news accounts and first person recollection. Taken for what it is, it's really quite good - you can breeze through if that's your preference or spend a little more time and read. Very friendly staff too.‬

‪This was a cool little museum. There was a Viking exhibit on display when we were there. Lots of Mardi Gras displays. Interesting events timeline. Worth the visit, and admission got you into Fort Conde across the street, also an interesting place.‬

‪We originally visited the museum to see the Viking exhibit but ended up finding the rest of the museum much more interesting. There was a display on the ground floor of hand-crafted doll houses which was fantastic. Also Mobile's history is presented in a very enjoyable format - concise and compelling. I liked all the information and displays of the submarine CSS HLHunley (the actual sub can be seen at the USS Alabama site, between the air museum and the USS Drum).‬

‪I like to learn about a city before I go exploring. I learned a lot. I did not know that Mobile was the birth place of Mardi Gras. This place is packed with history. Really a mixture of history. The Viking exhibit was my favorite. 7th century artifacts. The museum flows very well and shouldn't take any more than 2-3hrs.‬

‪Ann unexpected gem. The "History of Mobile in 22 Objects" was extremely well curated, guiding the Mobile visitor through history from around 1200 AD to nearly current times. Additionally, there was an on-loan exhibition from Sweden depicting the historical Viking culture development. Top all this off with a flamboyant Mardis Gras exhibit and the "miniatures" room and the experience is comprehensive and notable.‬

‪The History Museum is in the former town hall and has 2 floors full of interesting displays. Traces the area history from pre-columbian onward thru 5 different colonial powers. France, Spain, England, USA, Confederate and back to USA.
We have visited 3 times and always find something new to see. Make sure to see the Doll Houses Exhibit. They were made by one man for his granddaughters and took about 2 yrs each to complete. 2 are models of actual Mobile houses.
Special Exhibit on ancient Egypt was fascinating, current one on the Vikings is not.
Make sure to check out Mardi Gras Park across Royal St and the included Fort Conde.‬
