‪Lovely Spot for hiking and picnics!‬
אוג׳ 2020 • משפחה
‪Loved hiking the trail, not a strenuous hike at all. Just observing lots of birds, plant life, And the cover from all the trees of the rainforest were so relaxing! We also enjoyed a lovely picnic lunch after our hiking. Many picnic areas, some include fireplaces and grills, and also some shelters. It was such a beautiful spot!‬

‪Went theer Sept last year as a booked trip through Holland America. Went in the afternoon and had a nice walk through the rainforest, we were lucky enought to view a big black bear walk out of the forest and fish for salmon in the creek below the boardwalk and i got some great photos . then we walked onwards to the inlet by the salmon hatchery and there was a mother and cub and she actually swam the cub aacross the little inlet towards us so they were very close, it was amazing to see them so close up. According to the guides we were lucky as the morning tour only saw one bear but as they say there is no gaurantee. There was also 2 seals in the water and herons and lots of seagulls. there is only one steep section at the start of the walk and even if you are quite unfit (i am ) it was not difficult‬

‪Disappointing‬
ספט׳ 2019
‪We didn't book an excursion in Ketchikan through our cruise line (fortunately - as this one would have been more expensive) so we decided to see what was available once we got to shore. Thought the rain forest/bird sanctuary might be interesting considering we hadn't seen many bald eagles on our trip. I can only say that my husband and I were both disappointed. The short walk through the rain forest area was interesting, and the guide knowledgable but no bears were to be seen - which happens. We understand they have no control over wildlife sightings. We saw the outside of the salmon hatchery from across the river and our guide merely pointed out the facility. No other info was given about it. Did see one harbor seal making its way towards the hatchery. At the end of the walk they take you into the saw mill area where there was a native Tlingit(?) at work carving a totem pole. From there, you go to the "bird sanctuary". This was basically an area that you walk by where a handler shows you two birds - one of which was an older bald eagle named Lucy. Yes, you can see her close up for photos, but still rather sad. Although this was not as expensive an excursion as others, we felt it was not worth the money spent.‬

‪This temperate rainforest visit is ideal for anyone interested in Trees and the natural world. You will see trees which are centuries old and learn about the way they self'seed and grow varieties of mosses and lichen. If you are lucky as we were you will catch sight of black bears before leaving the forest to see where the river meets the sea and then go to the Bold eagle conservation centre. Sensible walking shoes are recommended.‬

‪To be there and experience nature this way was truly amazing. Seeing a black bear, salmon swimming and eagles flying, all in their natural environment - as it should be -well... there are no words. Saw my first banana slug too! :-)‬

‪We also saw the injured eagle sitting on a stump and a banana slug on this BEAR tour. The guides tried really hard to talk about big trees etc, but who were they kidding? There were zero bears. This was a very expensive and very disappointing BEAR tour. Tourists Beware.. you’re being ‘conned’ and you’ll waste a day and a tonne of money in Ketchikan, Alaska. Not that there’s much to do in that place anyway.. #totaldump‬

‪Great viewing of the salmon returning to spawn - all along the trail. Very exciting. Now, if only the bears would cooperate.‬

‪I didn’t know Alaska had a rainforest. Only one larger is the Amazon. We saw black bears, seals, salmon. Native plants also. There was a young gentleman (Tlingit I believe) carrying on the tradition of totem carving. Very interesting place. Don’t miss it. ‬
