‪What a wonderful scenic walk to an out of the way chapel, some moderate step paths but a magical chapel nestled in a hidden valley only accessible by foot‬

‪I hadn't been to Culbone church for 25 years so I was really glad to have the chance to return. It's a beautiful but very singular place, deep in a wooded valley leading to the sea. We walked from the Lynmouth/Porlock road at the top so that we could revisit the Culbone Stone high on the hillside above first. That's an experience in itself - a believed boundary marker from the sixth century deep within an extraordinary wood that's like something from an Arthur Rackham illustration!
The walk down to the church (and back!) is very steep, sometimes slippery and arduous so you have to be quite fit and nimble, but it's definitely worth it. An extraordinary and unforgettable ancient place.‬

‪An exceptionally beautiful walk along part of the Devon Coastal Path which takes you from Porlock Weir along the Worthy Toll Road (not to be confused with the toll road bypassing Porlock Hill) climbing up through dense woodland, with beautiful sea views out over the Bristol Channel, to reach St. Beuno's (pronounced Bayno) Church at Culbone. The church with its little tower, tiny spire, nave, and chancel is the smallest complete parish church in England. Set magically in a wooded dell, it is well worth the effort involved to reach it.

A word of warning: along this particular stretch of the coastal path part of it has been diverted owing to a landslip. While the route is perfectly safe, it is what it is and is not for the fainthearted, nor for those with any kind of mobility difficulties. However, those with the responsibility of maintaining it would do well to improve both signage and also install, at some locations, wooden handrails to aid both ascent and descent.‬

‪Circular walk from Porlock Weir via Culbone Church. This is a pretty walk but not for the faint hearted! Most of the 5 mile walk is either up or down hill and is very steep - not good for the knee joints! The walk takes you through 2 underground tunnels and past the toll road building which is very unusual. Culbone Church is a pretty Church in a tranquil spot and only accessible on foot. The walk continues mostly uphill before a long, steep final decent back to Porlock Weir. ‬

‪St Bueno's is reputedly the smallest church in England. It is certainly one of the cutest. It's pretty but not architecturally exceptional but it is enhanced by it's magical location in a wooded hillside valley just in from the coast. The hamlet of Culbone is, as far as I could see, just the church and two houses; it's a charming hidden oasis.

And it makes a great destination/turn-around point for a coastal walk. The walk from Porlock Weir is itself very pleasant. Don't get put off by a couple of steepish bits early on as it is pretty much a contour walk.

Don't expect too much of 'the fairytale tunnels'. If you come across them unexpectedly, as we did, they are intriguing but they're no more than that. It would be a shame to expect more and be disappointed when the hours walk is such a pleasure.‬

‪Climb up from Porlock Weir is quite hard but well worth it. The tunnels are interesting and the tiny Church basic but well worth a look. NB it is the only church I have ever seen with a sign inviting you to come in even if a service has started! (See Photo)‬

‪Well worth a few minutes to savor the atmosphere of this remote 1000 year old church. The place feels both historic and spiritual. ‬

‪Culbone church is one of the oldest churches in the uk. We were impressed about the history from the leppra people who lived their in the bush but were not allowed to come in the church. They followed the church services outside from a special designed window‬

‪It's a fairly challenging walk up, we hire slippy in places but great views in places. The church is very small and unique. One word, make sure you deet yourself up because I got back and had a tick on my foot. ‬
