Always on the lookout

We have one weekend in October, when with friends we go down to Villany (from Bp.) to have some of those beautiful wines. And we always try out something new. This year it was the Mokos cellars in Palkonya, and it was special for two reasons. One, they have absolutely amazing collection of "wines" made of a variety of fruits including peach, cherry, strawberry, plum, etc. So, if you want to try something new, it is definitely your place. And number two, Palkonya is a wonderful little village that makes you wanna move there right then at the moment. Very nice experience.

Authentic, old wine cellar hill with family wineries of Villany-Siklos Wine Route

Palkonya is a beautiful small village set amongst 3 fishing lakes with small family wineries and very tastefully decorated guesthouses. There is a village wine bistro open in weekends, try Nora Porta for a nice homemade cookie. The Villany-Siklos Wine Route of course is most well known about it's delicious red wine, although there are other things to do. From Palkonya cellars you can hike through the hills and forest on a well marked trail to Vylyan winery. Pécs is very close, that makes Palkonya a convenient and calm base to discover the surroundings.
Not only the wines are the main draw here, the village has an especially beautiful panoramic landscape, walking routes and the international "3 Rivers" bikeroute goes through it, passing Danube-Mura-Drava rivers. Danube-Drava National Park has also a lot to do with guided walking-, wildlife watching-, ship-, canoe- tours. Harmony and Siklos thermal spa - open all year - with wellness facilities is also around. Palkonya has 3 fishing lakes, there is also a horseriding place, and the cultural life - of course centered around wine - is also exceptional, there ar many festivities year round, and there is even a running competition around the wine hills every year.
