‪View back down the Ecclesbourne Valley is stunning and the Star Disc is thought provoking. Needs two visits, daytime for view, night time for star gazing‬

‪Pure tranquility‬
ספט׳ 2021
‪Don't miss this if you are visiting Wirksworth. It's well worth the walk up a very steep hill, but when you get there you are rewarded with jaw dropping views over the area. And the Star Disc itself is a place to stop you in your tracks and think about our place in the Universe. Best visited at night with the gentle colour-changing lights on the stones themselves, and the endless stars and planet when you look upwards. Humbling and mind blowing. ‬

‪Good place for a short wander‬
ספט׳ 2021
‪Well worth a wander round. About 20 min walk to top with things to see along the way. Can access by car if read or walk up hill too much.‬

‪Amazing sculpture!‬
יולי 2021
‪This was a random 'off the beaten track' visit to an awesome sculpture. I love the viewing deck from above the site which gives great views of the surrounding area too.
I've read it is lit up at night and used to various events. Worth a visit if you're in the area but be mindful of the steep road up to it.
Literally...out of this world!‬

‪Worth the Climb!‬

‪We decided to walk to the Stardisc, it was a climb up but lots of interesting architecture to take your mind off the Greco. The installation is very interesting and the view worth the climb up the hill!‬

‪Starry starry night...‬
אפר׳ 2021
‪This is a curious thing, perched on the edge of Stoney Wood and high on a hill overlooking the beautiful Ecclesbourne Valley in Derbyshire, and the starry night skies above the town of Winksworth.

The StarDisc is an interesting 21st century stone circle and celestial amphitheatre created by renowned visual artist Aidan Shingler, opening in 2011. The installation features a stone circle measuring 12m across with star charts engraved into black granite stone along with the names of constellations visible from the northern hemisphere, and a depiction of the Milky Way. The central star chart is surrounded by 12 silver granite seats representing the months of the year. After dark, the star chart is illuminated by low level lighting, powered by the sun.

Obviously it’s best visited on a clear evening, when the stars are in perfect view. Apparently the site was identified by the ‘Go Stargazing’ team as a good spot to stargaze from. This is based on local light pollution levels and distance from nearby towns. I believe that its website publishes ‘clear sky’ information, so you may want to check that if you are planning a stargazing outing.

I visited during the day, walking from the centre of Wirksworth up the very steep Green Hill to the site. The walk took about 20 minutes. It’s a visually interesting and quirky site during the day for sure, and is often used for weddings and concerts. It’s a good spot to sit peacefully, and to think about your own place in the universe, and to learn a little about our starry skies. The fine views across the Ecclesbourne Valley can also be appreciative and enjoyed. You can drive there, but I’m not sure if there are designated car parks or where they are. The site is open all hours, and is free to visit. There are no toilet facilities at the site.‬

‪The views were wonderful despite the heavy rain. I would imagine it would be a great place to go when the equinox’s are taking place. A very steep road to walk up to get there but the little footpath half way up offered lovely views and seats!‬

‪The wonder of the heavens, here on Earth‬
לבד • פבר׳ 2020
‪StarDisc is a place where my world got bigger. The forty foot black granite stone circle with the constellations carved into it, made me think in ways I had not done before.

It’s the perfect place to be alone, to come together, to contemplate and to celebrate.‬
