Lovely, easy walk (with a couple of ladders) giving a sense of what it was like to live there, to be there. Very worthwile stop. Enjoyed the $2 pamphlet about Tsankawi purchased at Bandelier NM BookStore.

I wish I could write a better review but despite beautiful vistas, the trail is difficult with parts of the trail just 8 inch narrow passage, slippery pumice rocks, unclear trail markings and ladder climbing. The biggest problem is poor signage at the ladder locations which is largely invisible at the top of the mesa making travel past marker 14 very frustrating. You have to go to the very edge of the mesa to see the ladder locations. Why not put a marker with an arrow to show where all the ladders are located? Trying to figure out how to get off the mesa ruined what should have been a memorable hike.

This was a highlight of our trip! Probably one our favorite hikes, ever. It is part of the Bandelier National Monument, although you have to drive a bit to the trail location. There are restrooms at the trailhead. The trail has open vista views, ancient artifacts like pottery shards, cliff dwelling remains, and ladders to climb. The hike is a loop; some ladders are optional and some are mandatory. You should be aware that there are a few tight places...narrow walking paths through sandstone that is about knee height, with a few spots that were up to my waist. I am 5 ft 3 in. There's not a lot of extra space, so someone who is on the short side with extra weight around their middle might find a tight squeeze. I don't remember if there was an option to walk around those spaces.

This is an incredible experience. Its part of the Bandelier national park. There is parking at the beginning of the trail head. You should take a trail guide. There is a loop trail to follow. Lot of climbing and small paths, ladders and rocks. It takes about an hour to complete. We saw some markers and looked around for petroglyphs. There are plenty to enjoy. The views are amazing. Its a must do. Be well prepared for the hike sunscreen, strong winds, sunglasses, hat, water.

I almost hate to attract more people here. It's a great hiking loop with incredible views. You pay on your honor, and are trusted to behave. Explore the caves, find pottery pieces. When we went, everyone was very respectful; walked where they wouldn't do damage, we saw no graffiti, no trash, and although there were lots of shards of pottery, they were left in the area. Please walk around the area because it's an incredible little hike; but please continue to act responsibly so they can leave it accessible.

Went at 830am for a little morning hike after driving over from the Main Loop/Alcove House trail. This was a great hike with good views and a few ladders to climb. There were spots that were a little tight so probably a bit uncomfortable if you have big feet. Parking was limited off the side of the main road on a gravel path. Highly recommend if you have the time.

We did both Bandelier and Tsankawi and this was our favorite by far. So many petroglyphs you have to keep your eyes peeled or you miss them. Views were magnificent. Trail was clearly marked and there were only 3 ladders so it was relatively easy. Recommend you go early before the sun heats the rocks.

After a long day exploring the Bandelier National Monument Loop and Falls trails we decided to check out the Tsankawi Ruins in the Los Alamos/White Rock vicinity. It was a great decision. With just a few hours left before dusk, we had plenty of time to explore these unique Indian trails, petroglyphs, and cave dwellings. And we practically had the park to ourselves. Incredible views, cool breezes, and a new appreciation of the ways that these Ancestral Puebloans lived are the memories we take. Only disappointment was that the Trail Guide box was empty so you might want to access a guide online before you go. Don't miss it in any case.

Often overlooked but worth the visit. Easy to miss this tiny little parking spot next to the junction of NM-4 and East Jemez Road intersection. Many have to do a U-turn to get to it once they spot it, but it is well worth the stop. No shade except at the very beginning of the trail so dress appropriately (water and sunscreen as well). About 1-1.5-hour hike.
Some places during this hike are quite narrow so you probably wouldn’t do it with a large backpack on your back or it may be difficult for people larger at the hips. Some places are less than a foot wide so even for small people, they have to nearly turn sideways to get buy.
Petroglyphs you see here are both from the time that the Tewa speaking natives were here, as well as further petroglyphs from shepherds in the early 1900s.
The Ancestral Tewa Pueblo lived and stored items in cavates, or rooms hollowed out or excavated from rocks or natural niches.
Much of Tsankawi and nearly 3,000 other archaeological sites at Bandelier remain unexcavated, at the wishes (for preservation of cultural significance) of the San Ildefonso Puebloans.
Small gem, not crowded, 6,600’ of altitude, Tewa people lived here 6-7 centuries ago, in the 1400-1500’s.
Retracing the steps of the Ancestral Tewa Puebloans was a particularly sobering experience for me. These people knew how to survive in harsh environments in harmony with their surroundings. We could learn much from them today.
This living landscape continues to hold deep cultural and religious significance to the Pueblo people. These places were not abandoned, just no longer-lived in. The spirits of the Pueblo ancestors still live here. Be kind to that history and these spirits.
Make sure you take your Bandelier pass if you have been there, it is accepted here for a week from the date of your Bandelier’s pass (and vice versa). Two for the price of one, take advantage of that.

My husband and I hiked the Tsankawi Ruins trail starting at 5:30 pm on a Wednesday afternoon. The trail head starts along NM-4 just a block north of E Jemez Road. There is a gravel parking lot and room for about 8 vehicles. The trail is about 1.5 miles round trip and there are three ladders to climb. The trail is inside the Bandelier National Monument so there is a fee of $25 per vehicle. Do not forget your water. The petroglyphs and views were awesome. There are restrooms are located at the trail head. The trail takes a bit over an hour. Recommended.

How much time would does a visit to Tsankawi take? We will have two kids, ages 10 and 6 with us and be there in early March.

I would allot maybe 1.5-2 hours if you are planning to go to the top. That way you have time to stop and take in the views. Enjoy! I loved that hike! Go early morning because it gets crowded...although I'm not sure about March.

Would my 5 year old be able to do this trail? He's done lots of hiking in Appalachian Mountains.

There are a few drops so you would need to hold hands and there is one short ladder but i suspect your 5 year old could hold on to you when you use it. Otherwise it is easy. Fyi parking is overpriced if i recall correctly. Doug

Hello,
I am going to Bandelier on Thursday. Online it said you can drive in if you arrive before 9 AM. I want to be there at 7 to avoid the crowd. We will park at the visitor center and then hike from there. How do you get to Tsankawi from Frijoles Canyon? Thank you. I am looking forward to see this beautiful place. Any other advice for me? Thanks.

The only info I can share is that we got there at 8 AM on a Sunday and there was no crowd which was really nice. By the time we were leaving around 9:30 people started arriving so early is good!

We tried this walk and couldn't find the ruins. The guide says number 4 is missing, but we couldn't find 5 through 20 either. Suggestions?

Just got home from Spain and opened this email. You must have made a wrong turn as we completed the entire circuit. It was amazing seeing the depth of the wear on the rock. Hope you had a good time!

We were there last week and found them all, but one or two. You have to go clear up on the mesa and walk all the way to the "back" of it (not sure what direction that is). The ruins, where you will find all types of pottery shards and can see the depressions of former buildings, are on the top about a half mile from where you climb the ladder to begin the hike. Then, you climb the ladder down the back side and climb around the caves and petroglyphs...coming around the side of the mesa back to that ladder you climbed at the beginning of the hike.

To access the main site you have to get the bus during the day. Are there any restrictions to just driving up to Tsankawi and parking? Is it difficult to find a parking space. I gather there are Rangers there sometimes - what is the situation over paying your entrance fee for this section?

We have the national pArk pass so we just parked in the allowable parking lot. But you can put money in a box. It's a nice visit as it was mentioned in our national geographic book. What is especially interesting is the years of foot travel embedded into the rock
