We had such a wonderful and unique evening! We went to places we would never have known about and learnt so much about jazz, Harlem and its community and history. Gordon is so knowledgeable and friendly, and the community we experienced at each club was amazing.

We booked a private tour with Amanda in Harlem, and I can’t begin to tell you what a great night it was. Specifically, our experience was the Round Midnight with Amanda Humes Harlem Jazz Tour. Three venues, untold introductions to incredible jazz artists, and so many laughs and memories. Amanda was incredible. She took the time to get to know us and discover our interests, then tailored the night towards that. While in NYC, we saw a couple of broadway shows, and did so many of the traditional tourist-y things, but this was the BEST night of our trip by far. We sang in the club where Billie Holiday frequented, and we sat and chatted with so many great people, musicians, and talented jazz artists. The incredible talent we witnessed had performed and recorded with Aretha Franklin, Savion Glover, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, and Stevie Wonder. We danced, we laughed, ate great food, had terrific cocktails, and made new friends.
Here’s the thing - my wife and I are introverts, so it can be challenging for us to have a true ‘adventure.’ But we were able to “borrow” Amanda’s energy and just go with it, which resulted in a truly unforgettable experience. One thing we learned: when Amanda asks if you want to do something, say YES. You won’t regret it.

This is a must do experience!!! We had a fabulous evening with Gordon Polatnick of Big Apple Jazz Tours in Harlem. From a wonderful show downstairs at Silvana’s with Phil’s House of Blues Band ( and delicious dinner there too) to the great folks at New Amsterdam Musical Association, (NAMA) ( 100 year old organization!) including Yovanne Pierre and band, we had a truly unique experience and one we will always remember! Gordon’s knowledge, insights and relationships with many of the musicians really added to a very special evening.

Amanda Humes led us on a fun tour of great music in Harlem. She knows all the musicians, which we enjoyed meeting. And she knows the smaller venues with great bands. Never a dull moment with Amanda, and she is also an excellent singer.

A few weeks ago, five years after our last visit, my wife Kathleen and I returned to New York City.
Without another evening in Harlem with the Big Apple Jazz Tours and the incomparable Amanda, a trip to the Big Apple wouldn’t have been complete for us. We met Amanda 5 years ago when she guided us for the first time through Harlem.
The day after successfully completing the TCS New York Marathon, we met Amanda again for another unforgettable night and to be immer-sed once more in the vibrant world of jazz and blues, celebrating both our wedding anniversary and my marathon-achievement 😉.
Prior to our arrival, we communicated with Gordon and Amanda, who made an itinerary tailored to our interests and preferences, ensuring a unique ‘Jazz & Blues’ experience.
Our evening started at 6:30 PM at Silvana Café, located at 300 West 116th Street. After a delightful reunion and some catching up, we descended into the intimate speakeasy ambiance of Silvana’s lower level.
There, we indulged in delectable Middle Eastern cuisine and refreshing drinks while enjoying two exceptional sets by Phil Young and the House of Blues Band. Phil Young, a Harlem legend, led the ensemble with masterful drumming, accompanied by top-tier musicians delivering impassioned solos on guitar, saxophone, and piano.
The vocalists captivated us with their soulful renditions, making it an extraordinary musical experience. Many thanks to Amanda and all these great artists, also for making it for us a ‘very personalized’ performance …
Following the performances at Silvana, Amanda guided us to our next destination: the historic New Amsterdam Musical Association (NAMA), the oldest Black musicians’ union in Harlem, established a century ago. There, we were treated to a dynamic and eclectic set by Manny’s Boogaloo Crew, a Funky Latin/Jazz collective brimming with percussive energy. Eusebio ‘Manny’ Montanez, the group’s leader and a great friend of Amanda’s, welcomed us warmly into this vibrant musical family. The infectious rhythms inspired us to dance, and the spontaneous nature of the jam sessions added an authentic touch to the evening. NAMA’s off-the-beaten-path location and genuine atmosphere made it a truly unique and, again personalized, New York experience.
As we strolled back, Amanda enriched our journey with fascinating insights into Harlem’s rich history. Her expertise and passion for the neighborhood’s cultural heritage shone through, adding depth to our adventure. It was the perfect touch of a wonderfull second experience with Amanda & the Big Apple Jazz Tours.

We had a super evening visiting two small intimate jazz venues with Gordon. We were able to have Gordon pick us up from the hotel and take us to the venues. The bonus was the wonderful tour of Harlem pointing out great sights such as the Apollo Theater, Duke Ellington Statue and other historical jazz info. Well worth the additional cost for the pickup! If we get back to NYC again, I'll definitely schedule another Jazz tour night.

This was a really fun walking tour and Amanda is a delightful guide! She tells you about parts of jazz and Harlem history, and sites that you would not know of otherwise ( mostly because they don't exist anymore, and there are no blue plaques marking those places). You wouldn't know of these from looking it up on Google so we feel really lucky that Amanda was our guide through this fascinating history! Apart from that, the music venues included in the tour are incredible. Again, these did not show up when I was looking up recommended venues for live jazz gigs, which is a great loss, really- both gigs were amazing musical experiences, and Amanda really involves you in the music-explaining nuances you may not get, giving you background on the band, and you even get to meet the members of the band! It's a truly one of a kind experience, and I can't recommend it enough. If I'm ever in new York again, I'll definitely book this tour once more( even if it's the same venues)!!

Gordon was a great guide. We visited a couple of jazz spots, had some great food, and stopped by some of Harlem's most historic sites. Gordon was extremely knowledgeable and is at the centre of the Harlem jazz scene. Highly recommended!

Gordon and Amanda tailored an absolutely fantastic evening for us — and a perfect celebration in every way! Amanda was our stellar guide back in time to Prohibition as we visited legendary Harlem sites and retraced the footsteps of iconic musicians. Amanda had surprises for us at every turn and the night unfolded in the best way, with the energy driving us forward like the exploding rumble of a double bass. Each club we visited had great vibes, amazing music, surprise performances, and special guests. I could have stayed out all night, but the last club pumpkin’d at 3am.
Our experience didn’t end when the music stopped, as we got to relive the night’s magic the following day when we received the wonderful photos and videos taken during our tour. I truly feel like the night was priceless — and we all felt like we ended the night having gained new friends in Gordon and Amanda.
Do yourself a favor and book this tour! If you only have 1 night in the city, spend it with Big Apple Jazz! 🎶🎶

Tours range in cost at this time from $99 per ticket to private tours for groups starting at $500 for up to 10 guests plus expenses.

Great question. You would be surprised to know that we just had a toddler join us last month. We went to a hidden private club with Hammond organ trio playing - the parents and the 1 and a half year old had a blast. We will take anyone of any age into the thrilling world of NYC live jazz - and like Kathy experienced - we may even be able to find them playing opportunities!!

If you are curious about jazz, we are prepared to help you become familiar with the history, the spirit and the best possible places and bands that will help you understand why people love to hang in jazz clubs - particularly in Harlem and Greenwich Village.

If you love Motown you'll love the Harlem Juke Joint Tour, where we visit 2 or 3 underground clubs with great swinging bands and singers. Thursdays are great nights where you'll get a taste of some jazz, funky horns, and soulful sax and Hammond organ.

It is great please sign up there is A Harlem juke joint tour on nov 2 or 27th. What dates are you visiting in Nov so we can advise you of great nights for jazz. Let us know if you play an instrument and want to jam. Best Amanda

Sorry we missed this one. Generally speaking, with enough notice, we can do a tour any night for as many people as necessary. This is a tour company that thrives on flexibility and keeps our creative juices flowing.
Typically, we have at least one tour running every night, the Harlem Juke Joint jazz tour being the most popular, and available by visiting our Big Apple Jazz website.
