The visit to this castle is tough on body real cardio exercise you get. It is nice castle a very less money to get in This could have been better maintained

Wandered up through the old town to visit this, great walk( bit steep in places) but shady! The views were amazing and the Castillo is fascinating, the display boards (English and Spanish) really give the feeling of how it has been used over the years… best early (ish) morning before it gets busy.

Top visit
Splendid view walking up to the castle .starting at San Cristobal. Passing the cactus botanical garden. The castle has nice views, and animations.

This castle, which dates from the 11th - 16th century, provides a great view over the town of Almunecar but there is a 'cost' to pay as the climb up to the entrance is rather steep.
The history of the castle is rather interesting and there were a couple of small exhibitions open when we visited.

I have been to the Castle umpteen times over the Years. Apart from anything else it is great Exercise getting there and walking around. Then it really depends on whether one is more interested in its History, its Architectural Splendour or the Magnificant Views. I have read the the 3 previous Reviews ( claessonstravel; Culture523517; charlizee78 ) And I concur.

We Walked Up to this Castle After visiting parque ornitologico loro sexi and jardin de cactus, was a bit of all steep walk but worth it. I would recommended One to carry water if plankning this. THE entrance fee was 4 euros each. Takes One about 1 - 1 /2 hours to tour. Very picturesque. The ticket also includes access to the museum of archeology (we Will do that today). Remember because of the Corona virus situation you may want to call ahead re opening Times (or take the chance as we did) and consider the spanish's opening and closing hours in accordance with siesta. Very relaxed, quiet excursion overlooking beaches. Informative using your sense of imagination as to how it was back in time (HISTORY). As there were no tour guides etc. Recomended if in the area with time om your hands.

The castle is small, but it is well kept, and the entertainer of the hotel we were going with told us very interesting things.

We decided to climb up a short winding road to the castle on a sunny morning. It can also be approached via winding old town streets and steps. It was only 1€ 60 pppn and that includes entry to the archaeological museum. Although the castle is in ruins apart from fortified walls, it has a fascinating history from Roman times through Phoenecian and Castilian occupations. Different levels are accessed by wooden steps with wooden handrails on one side. There are very good info' boards in Spanish and English, Also three covered rooms with interactive features and artefacts and models. The views from battlements are stupendous. So well worth a visit.There is one unisex toilet. It is closed on Mondays and over lunchtimes.

The fort is very well worth a visit, and since the entrance fee also includes the archeological museum in the old town it is worth its price. The walls are well preserved and the interiour is interesting. There are information posts and signs in both Spanish and English. Within the garrison pavillion you will see a brief but well made display over the history of the fortress development from Roman times, on to the Moors and after the reconquista when the christians took over.
In one of the old Towers there is a short film that in a humorous way explains the history of the area as a roman, and arab and a spaniard are arguing. The film is in spanish, but has English subtitles. Another thing that struck me as funny was the collapsed tower at the gate entrance "Umm, captain… there was an accident. A tower fell down..."
