‪Besalu is a very old town(900's) with a bridge into the city with fortresses and gates used to close it. The mikveh was found intact and dates back to the 1100's. The town is very quaint to walk through. The mikveh can only be seen with a tour. The woman from the tourist office was giving a tour in Spanish and was lovely and said that we could stay after and she would explain it to us in English. Worth a visit if you can work the tour time into other plans in the area.‬

‪We were interested in seeing the Jewish quarter, the synagogue and ofcourse, the mikve. We read that the tourist office had the key, I contacted the toursit office and they had one tour at 11 on one day and none at the the time or day that we would be there. We didn't want to pay $$$ for a private tour. We ended up walking around on our own, we saw the outside of the synagogue and the outside door or the mikve. We read the signs and our Rick steves tour book about the area. ‬

‪Visited the Mikva and Besalú as part of a day tour of Girona and Besalú with Marc Sanchez of Girona Experience.
Can’t speak highly enough of Marc’s professionalism, knowledge enthusiasm and personality. We enjoyed every minute of the day tour.
We certainly gained a very good idea of what Jewish life would have been like in the 1300 and 1400’s.‬

‪This is a really neat spot, definitely off the beaten path. You can arrange a tour at the TI office near the Hotel Jardins at the end of the bridge.‬

‪You have to make arrangements to get in to the mikveh - it is behind locked doors. Once you get in, it is a stone room with wonderful acoustics, and the parts of the mikveh are in excellent shape and clearly defined. We saw it on a private tour with Barcelona Dreaming - I don't think we could have managed it without them.‬

‪Besalu has a Mikveh a Jewish religion purification bath, from around 15c discovered in 20c below a contemporary building where once stood an early synagogue The condition is absolutely pristine, the stone work as new. Significant to a thriving Jewish community in this region of Moorish Spain at that time. For a tour the key must be sought from the nearby tourist office.‬

‪The mikveh (miqve in Catalan) is an interesting medieval Jewish ritual bath in very good condition; it was practically untouched and unseen for centuries as it had been buried and built over, and was only rediscovered in the 20th century. It is one of the very few medieval mikvehs that have been found in Europe, so is well worth a visit.

The door to the mikveh is locked, so you have to arrange a visit in advance with the Besalú tourist office, who will charge you a small fee for a guided tour.‬

‪This was such a unique opportunity being able to see this centuries old artifact. There are so few of these still in existence. Despite how old it is, it was only found in the last 50 years so its in very good condition. You have to obtain a key from the tourist office, but its a simple procedure and well worth the effort.‬

‪We paid the few euros and had basically a private tour (get tickets at the visitor's center before the bridge). It was like stepping back into time. ‬
