‪It was somewhat of an enjoyable adventure reaching the Monastery, beginning in Sofia with Tram 22 to its terminus, early Saturday morning. Then Bus 117 which was practically empty at the early weekend hour.

We asked the driver to let us off for the Monastery at Sveta Petka but not sure he understood. Fortunately a passenger interceded for us and we alighted in the midst of farm buildings.

A elderly man returning home with some shopping kindly walked us along a track through the fields and eventually pointed us towards the road leading to the Monastery. By the way, when returning, we retraced our steps as best we could and arrived at the 156-To Oy bus stop.

With a wonderful setting the monastery is captivating. Our guide told us that monks are no longer in residence and it is devout people like herself that attend and keep the establishment.

We were the only visitors and she gave us an unhurried tour. Informing us that the oldest church is from the 15th century, it is beautifully evocative with many frescoes, and given its age, exposed wall. St. George killing the dragon is shown in a number of paintings.

Another larger church dating from 1907 serves as the summer place of worship. Vivid frescoes and icons are to be admired. A fine iconastasis separates the congregation from the holiest place from where the priest declaims.

A small modern church is used in the cold wintertime. It is atmospheric with grand icons and iconastatis. We saw offerings left by the faithful in front of icons.

A shop sells locally produced foodstuffs and crafts. We bought a quince liqueur and pine nut spread.

Undoubtedly a memorable visit and a fabulous few hours spent on an early Saturday morning.‬
